COAT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented .0 1; 19 192() 7 Application filed January 23, 1920. Serial No; 353,556.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HARRIS, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Jefferson City, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coat-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to a garment hanger or support.
The primary object of the invention is to produce a hanger which shall be of a longitudinally adjustable nature and also which, when not in use may be collapsed or folded to produce a small package for storage or transportation.
Other objects and advantages will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan View of the improvement in its expanded position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is an edge view.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the device collapsed.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view approximately on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4:.
Primarily my improvement comprises three associated parts constituting what may be termed a body which is the central part and slidable members on the body which constitute the end parts. The central part is preferably constructed of two strands of wire. These strands at the center thereof are twisted upon themselves as at 5, while the central portion of the twisted parts are curved upon themselves so that the center of the body is provided with a round eye 6. Through the twisted center of the body there is extended from the ends thereof outwardly inclined pairs of arms 7-7. Each pair of arms, at the outer end thereof is bent laterally in an outward di-' rection and the said lateral ends are bent upon themselves to provide eyes 8. To the central eye of the body is connected the supporting hook 9, and also to the eye there is a depending ring member 10 to which hooks for garments may be received. 1
The oppositely disposed arms 77 exert an outward pressure away from each other and extend the inherent resiliency upon the metal from which they are formed, and consequently the said arms exert a pressure upon the arched side arms 11 of the end members 12 of the device. The end mem-' here are each formed of a single strand of spring wire centrally bent upon themselves as at 13, and the free ends of the arms 11 thus provided are inturned toward each other and are formed with eyes la, and these eyes are received on the arms 77 of the central or body member 5. By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the device is arched in edge elevation and also that the arms 11 of the end members 12 are rounded from the center thereof to the ends provided with the eyes 14 and to the rounded connecting portion of the said arms. However the arms 11 of the end members are adapted to exert an outward pressure away from each other from the free ends thereof, and
consequently the eyes 14 of the said side members will exert a frictional engagement against the arms 77 of the body member 5; and in a like manner the eyes 88 of the arms 7-7 will exert an outward pressure upon the arms 11 of the end members. By this arrangement it will be seen that the end members may be adjusted and retained in such adjusted position at any degree with respect to the central body member. It will be further noted that the device may be folded to provide a compact package, when the end members are telescoped on the body member as illustrated in Fig. 5.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a device for the purpose set forth 'a body having outwardly extending sprin arms arranged in airs on the ends thereo and the ends of t e said arms being outturned and formed with eyes, end members including arched sides of resilient material which exert a pressure away from each other 1 and pass through the eyes of the respective pairs of arms, and the arms of the ends being connected at the outer portions thereof, said arms having their inner ends inturned and formed with eyes, and the said eyes be-,'
ing received on the arms of the'body mem- 2. In a garment support a body constructed of two strands of spring Wire which are centrally twisted upon themselves and provide an eye at the center of the said twisted portions, a supporting hook attached to the each other, said arms having their free ends inturned and formed with eyes, and one 10 pair ofeyes on the respective end members received on one pair of arms on the oppositely disposed arms of the body member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANK HARRIS.
