1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, PiiiLirrn on CLAMEOY, a cltizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of lvlassmhusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting- Machines, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to improvements in type-writing machines and more particu-' be moved horizontally from their normal extended operative positions to more compact positions closerto the type bars without breaking the mechanical connection be tween the keys and type bars.
Another object of the invention is to provide a key action embodying key-operated levers having pivotally connected horizontally foldable sections to permit the keys to be shifted horizontally toward the rear of the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a key action embodying;- collapsible levers pivotally supported intermediate their ends and having constantly maintained mechanical connectionswith the keys and type bars. 7
A further object of the invention is to provide a key action embodying key-operated levers fulcrumcd intermediate their ends on a horizontally shiftable support and operatively connectd at their rear ends with he type carriers, said levers having'collapsiblc sections both fore and aft of their fulcriuns to permit the, opposite ends of the and the support to be compacted into close relation with each other and with'the type carriers. 7 v
Another important object of the invention is to provide a collapsible typewriting machine having key action embodying a universal keyboard and collapsible key-operated levers operatively connected to actuate the type bars, and means whereby the banks of keys may be shifted relatively to each other to mat. a the keyboard compact and the compacted keyboard shifted bodily beneath the type bars.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a typewriting machine having a compactible key action and means whereby a uniform relative'movement may be im1 parted to the parts of the key action when the key action 1s extended and compacted,
and a further object is to provide a col lapsible typewriting machlne. having a horizontally slidable keyboard frame part and lazy tongs mechanlsm operable by movement of the keyboard frame part into and out of the main frame for imparting a uniform relative movement between the banks of keys of the keyboard.

T he main frame part comprises a bottom plate liand side walls 2. Any desired form of type bar hanger may be provided, such as a curved rod 8 supported at its ends in the several I main frame part in any suitable manner. 7
The type bars a are pivotally mounted at their rear ends on the hanger 3, and the seg- 7 mental basket of type bars may be normally supported in a horizontal position, to move upwardly and rearwardly to the printing point, in any suitable manner, as by a curved plate 5 supported in the main frame part and provided with a suitable cushion 6 for the heads of the type bars.
A keyboard support 7 is hinged to the bottom plate 1 of the mainframe part at 8 to fold upwardlyand rearwardly, said support being adapted to cooperate with the when the machine is collapsed. The keyboard is provided with three rows of keys 9, 10 and 11, supported in banks, and a space bar 12 supported in front of the banks of keys, as is rommon in universal or stand ard keyboards. The space bar 12 is supported adjacent its ends on two vertically reciprocable stems or rods 13, preferably angular in cross section, and guided in angular apertures in the front cross-bar 14 of a forwardly and rearwardly slidable substantially U-shaped keyboard frame, the side members 15 of which are slidably supported in guide-ways formed by inwardly project ing ribs or flanges 16 formed on the side walls 2 of the main frame. The space bar supporting rods or stems 13 are connected by horizontal pivot pins 17 with the front ends of two collapsible levers 18, pivotally supported intermediate their ends on a pivot rod 19. The rod 19 extends transversely of the machine and is supported at its ends in standards 20 mounted on a slide 21 which is guided in ways 22 on the main frame. The levers 18 are formed with laterally shift able portions 18 and 18 forwardly of their pivotal points and with laterally shiftable sections 18 and 18 at the rear of their pivotal points. The several sections of the levers 18 are pivotally connected together by vertical pivot pins 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28, and said levers may be connected in any .suitable manner to actuate a carriage es capement mechanism when the space bar 12 is depressed.
The front bank of keys 9 are mounted on angular vertically reciprocable key stems 29, guided in angular apertures in a transversely extending bar 30 slidably s ported at its ends in grooves or ways 1. formed in the inner faces of the side menr bers 15 of the sliding U-shaped keyboard frame. The banks of keys l0 and 11. are mounted on angular key stems or rods 32 and 33, respectively, guided in angular apertures in transversely extending bars 34 and 35, slidably supported in ways or grooves 36 and 37, formed in the side menr bers 15 of the keyboard frame above the groove 31. Each key 9 connected with its associated type bar 4 by a collapsible key lever 38, connected at its forward end with the key stem 29 by a horizontal pivot pin 39, and connected at its rear end by a horizontal pivot pin 49 with the lower end of a rigid link 41. Each link 41 is connected. with its associated type bar 4 forward of the pivotal point of the type bar by a horizontal pivot pin 42. It will be understood that the links 41 are bent or shaped in the usual manner to connect with the type bars supported on the curved rod or hanger 3. Each key lever 38 is pivotally supported in termediate its ends on a transversely extending rod 43 which is held at its ends in the standards 20 carried by the slide 21. lilach of the key levers 38 is formed with two laterally shiftable sections 38* and 38" in front of its pivotal point and with two laterally shiftahle sections 38" and 38 at the rear of its pivotal point, the several seclions of each lever being connected by vertical pivot pins 44, 45, 46, 47, 48 and 49.
Each key 10 is connected with one of the links 41 by a jointed and collapsible lever 50 of substantially the same construction as the levers 38, and each key lever is pivotally supported intermediate its ends on a transversely extending rod 51 supported in. the standards 20 above the pivot rod oi keys 9. Each key 11 is connected with one of the links 41 by a jointed and ccllapsi. lever 52 of substantially the same construction as the l-rey levers 38 and 56, and each key lever 52 is pivotally supported intermediate its ends on a transversely extending rod 58 carried by the standards 29 on slide 21 directly above the pivot rods 19, and 51,
The U-shaped keyboard frame is suppor ed at its forward end on two posts 54, the upper ends of which are rigidly connectm'l with the bar 14 adjacent its ends, and the lower ends of which. are rigidly held. to a slide The sliding bar 30 is rigidly connected with a slide 56 by two posts 57, and the bars 34 and 35 are similarly connected with slides 58 and 59 by posts 60 and 61. The four pairs of posts 54, 57, 60 and 61 are connected at each side of the machine by suitable lazy tongs mechanism comprising pairs of links 62 and 63 pivotally connected with each other at 64 and pivotally connected at their lower ends with the adjacent posts by pivot pins 65. The upper ends of the links 62 and 63 are pivotally held at 66 to sleeves 67 slidably held on the posts.
A slide 68 is mounted in the guideways 22 forwardly of the slide 21. The slide 21 is provided adjacent each end with a post 69 and a post 70 is mounted on slide 68 adjacent each end thereof. The posts 69 and 70 at each side of the machine are connected with eachother and with the pair of posts 61 on slide 59 by a lazy tongs mechanism. This lazy tongs comprises pairs of links 71 and 72 pivotally connected at 73, and pivotally held to the posts at their lower ends. The links 71 and 72 are pivotally held at their upper ends to sleeves 74 slidably mounted on the posts 61, 69 and 70. When the key action is in its normal extended operative position the slides 21 and 68 are supported on the main frame part in the ways 22, and the slides 55, 56, 58 and 59 are supported in ways 75 formed on the hinged plate or support 7 and adapted to register with the ways 22 when said plate is in its unfolded position. The inner ends of the side members of the U-shaped keyboard frame are supported in the outer ends of the ways 16 when the key action is in its normal operative position. The slide 55 which supports the forward end of the keyboard frame is operative positions, as shown in Figs. 1, 2'
and 5, when it is desired to collapse the key action and shift the keyboard to its compact inoperative position beneath the type bars, it is simply necessary to grasp the finger pieces 76 and push the slide 55 rearwardly along the guideways 75 and 22 until the rear ends of the side members 15 of the keyboard frame abut against stops 77 formed at the rear ends of the guideways 16. As the keyboard frame and slide 55 move rearwardly the lazy tongs connecting the posts 54, 57, GO and 61 and the lazy tongs connecting the posts (31, 70 and 69 are collapsed causing the plates or bars 30, 34 and 35 to move relatively to each other and to the bar 14 of the keyboard frame until said bars 30, 34 and 35 abut against the forward ends of the grooves 31, 36 and 37 in the side members of the frame. The bars 30, 34 and 35 are also shi lited bodily rearwardly with the keyboard frame and the slides 55, 56, 58 and 59, said slides moving into close relation with each other and passing from the ways 75 into the ways 22 on the main frame part, thus compacting the keyboard from front to rear by shifting the space bar and the several banks of keys into close relation with each other and simultaneously moving the compacted kevboard within the main frame part beneath the type bars. As the crossbar 14 ofthe keyboard frame moves rearwardly the jointed space bar-levers 18 collapse shown in Fig. 3, the pivots 24 and 27 being offsetat opposite sides of the levers and out of alinementwith the pivots 23, 25, 26 and :28 when the levers are in their normal extended opera-tive positions. The sets of key levers 38. and 52 operated by the banks of k 9,10 and 11 are also collapsed when the keyboard frame is moved rearwardly, asshown in Figs. 3 and 6, the pivots 45 and 48 of the levers 38 and the corresponding pivots of the levers 50 and 52 being out of alinement and at one side of the remaining pivots connecting the several sections of the respective levers together. A transvorsebar 78, held at its ends to the side walls of the main frame part, extends across the machine at the rear of the links 41 and closely adjacent the pivots 40 and serves as a stop or abutment for thelinks 41'and the rear ends of the levers 18,- 38, 50 and when the key action is being collapsed. ll hen the key action is'collapsed, the hinged plate or support 7 may be swung upwardly to close the opening at the front of the main frame part, as shown inFigs.
3 and 6, the main frame part and plate 7 thus serving asa casing tocompletely im close the key action. Any sultable locking means may be provided for holding the plate 7 in its folded position.
The extent of the outward movement of the keyboard frame is limited by the engagement of slide 55 with the stops 79 at the outer ends of the ways 75 and also by the two pairs of lazy tongs mechanisms. The extent of inward and outward movement of the slide 21, carrying the four pivot rods 19, 43, 51 and 53, is limited by two stops 80 held to the bottom plate 1 of the main frame. The inward movement of slide 21 is limited by the engagement of said slide with the bases of the stops 80, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, and the outward movement of the slide is limited by the engagement of the standards 20 with the outwardly bent ends of the forwar extending arms of said stops, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The stops 80 and the rear pair of lazy. tongs determine the osition of the slide 59 and plate 35 carrying the innermost bank of keys 11, the posts 69 he ovided with pins 81 I Fig. 5) adapted to engage sleeves 74 and limit the d res of ex ansion of the rear pair of lazy tongs connecting postsbl, and 69. The forward air of lazy tongs connecting the posts 54, 57, 60 and 61 determine the relative positions of slides 55, 56, 58 and 59, and bars 14, 30, 34 and 35, the degree of eX- pansion of said lazy tongs being limited by stops 79 and also by pins 82 on posts 54,
said pins being adapted to engage the sleeves (37 to limit the expansion of the lazy tongs. It will thus be seen that means is provided for insuring the proper positioning of the space bar and the several banks of keys when the key action is extended. The setsof lazy tongs also serve to prevent the sets of collapsible levers 18, 38, 50 and 52 from bein extended sufficiently to bring the pivots 24 and 27 of levers 18, the pivots 45 and 48 of levers 38, and the correspond ing pivots of levers 50 and 52 into alinement with the remaining pivots connecting the several sections of said levers together.
What I claim is 1. In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, type bars mounted on the main frame part, a keyboard movable rectilinearly fore and aft of the machine relatively to the type bars from a normal extended operative position keyboard movable rectilinearly fore and aft of the machine relatively to thetype bars from a normal extended operative position to a more compact inoperative position, and collapsible levers pivotally supported intermediate their ends, said levers being positively connected at their forward ends with the keys of the keyboard and being positively connected at their rear ends with the type bars.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the type-bars of a compactible key action emli-odying pivoted vertically vibratable key-operated levers having constantly maintained mechanical connections with the type bars and each formed of relatively foldable hinged sections positively connected together to fold horizontally.
4, In a typewriting machine, the combination with the type bars of a rectilinearly compartible key action embodying pivoted key-operated levers having constantly main tained mechanical connections with the type bars and each formed of relatively foldable sections positively and pivotally connected together.
In a typewriting machine, the combination with the type bars of a compactible key action embodying pivoted key operated levers having constantly maintained mechanical connections with the type bars and each formed of relatively foldable sections positively and pivotally connected together, the axes of the pivots connecting the sections of each lever together extending at right angles with the axis of the pivotal point of the lever.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a frame, upwardly and rearwardly movable type bars pivotally supported on the frame, horizontally collapsible key-operated lovers pivotally supported on the frame intermediate their ends, and links pivotally held at their lower ends to the rear ends of said key-operated levers and pivotally connected at their upper ends with the type bars.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a frame, upwardly and rearwardly movable type bars pivotally supported on the frame, horizontally collapsible key-operated levers pivotally supported on the frame intermediate their ends, and links pivotally held at their lower ends to the rear ends of said key-operated levers and pivotally connected at their upper ends with the type bars forwardly of the type bar pivots.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a frame, upwardly and rearwardly mova i le type bars pivotally supported on the frame, key-operated levers pivotally supported in the frame intermediate their ends and having relatively foldable portions forwardly of their fulcrums pivotally connected together, and links pivotally connccted at their lower ends with the rear ends of said levers and pivotally connected at their upper ends with the type bars forwardly of the type bar pivots.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame, upwardly and rearwardly movable type bars pivotally supported in the main frame, a keyboard having a plurality of banks of keys, collapsible key operated levers pivotally supported in the main frame and positively connected with the keys and type bars at all times, and means whereby the banks of keys may be moved into compact relation with each other and simultaneously shifted bodily beneath the type bars to reduce the length of the machine from front to rear.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame, upwardly and rearwardly movable type bars pivotally supported in the main frame, a keyboard having aplurality of banks of keys, collapsible key operated levers pivotally supported in the main frame and positively connected with the keys and type bars at all times, means whereby the banks of keys may be moved into compact relation with each other and simultaneously shifted bodily beneath the type bars to reduce the length of the machine from front to rear, and means for properly positioning the banks of keys when the keyboard is extended.
11. A typewriting machine having a compactible key action, and means whereby a uniform relative movement may be imparted to the parts of the key action when the key action is extended and compacted.

A typewriting machine having a compactible keyboard comprising a space-bar and a plurality of rows of keys arranged in banks, means whereby the banks of keys and the space bar may be simultaneously moved horizontally relatively to each other from their normal operative positions into more compact relation, and means whereby the compacted keyboard may be shifted bodily into more compact relation with an other part of the machine.
14. A typewriting machine having a compactible keyboard comprising a space bar and a plurality of rows of keys supported in banks, and means whereby the space bar and the several banks of keys may be simultaneously moved horizontally relatively to each other from their normal extended operative positions into more compact relation with each other and into more compact relation with another part of the machine.
15. A typewriting machine having a com pactible keyboard comprising a space bar and a plurality of rows of keys supported in banks, means whereby the space bar and the several banks of keys may be simultaneously moved horizontally relatively to each other from their normal extended operative positions into more compact relation with each other and into more compact relation with another part of the machine, and means for limiting the extent of the relative movement between the space bar and the banks of keys.

A typewriting machine having a compactible keyboard comprising a space bar and a plurality of rows of keys supported in banks, means whereby the space bar and the several banks of keys may be simultaneously moved horizontally relatively to each other from their normal extended operative positions into more compact relation with each other and into more compact relationwith another part of the machine, means for limiting): the extent of the relative movement between the space bar and the banks of keys, and means for limiting the extent of. the bodily movement of the keyboard; 7

In a typewriting machine,- the combination of a main frame part, type bars mounted on the main. frame part, a compactible and bodily shiftable keyboard comprising a plurality of rows of keys supported in banks, constantly maintained positive mechanical operating connections between the keys of the keyboard and the type bars, and means for simultaneously shifting the several banks of keys from their normal between the keys of the keyboard and the type bars. and lazy tongs mechanism' for shifting the several banks of'keys relatively to each other from their normal extended operative positions'into closer relation with each other and simultaneuosly moving the banks of keys into more compact relation with the type bars.

In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, type bars mounted on the main frame part, a keyboard having a plurality of banks of keys, a plurality of groups of levers pivotally supported intermediate their ends, or a plurality of superposed rods extending transversely of the main frame part, each group of levers being supported on a different rod and positively connected with one bank of keys at their forward ends and with their associated type bars at their rear ends, and means for shifting the banks of keys relatively to each other and for shifting the banks of keys and the superposed pivot rods supporting the levers bodily relatively to the type bars.
29. In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, type bars mounted on the main frame part, a
keyboard having a plurality of banks of keys, a plurality of groups of levers pivotally supported intermediate their ends on a plurality of superposed rods extending transversely of the main frame part, each group of levers being supported on a different rod and positively connected with one bank of keys at their forward ends and with their associated type bars at their rear ends, and means for shifting the banks of keys relatively to each other and for shifting the banks of keys and the superposed pivot rods supportin the lovers bodily relatively to the type bars, each of said levers having relatively foldable pivotally connected sections at each side of its fulcrum.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of type bars, a keyboard having a plurality of banks of keys, a plurality of groups of foldable key-operated levers having shiftable fulcrums and positively connected with the keys and type bars, there being one group of levers for each bank of keys, and lazy tongs mechanism for imparting a uniform relative movement to the banks of keys to extend and compact the keyboard and for shifting the keyboard and the fulcrums of the key operated levers bodily relatively to the type bars to fold the key operated levers and move the keyboard into closer relation with the type bars.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, upwardly and rearwardly movable type bars pivotally supported on the main frame part, a keyboard frame part slidably held to move into and out of the main frame part below the type bars, a plurality of transversely extending slides supported at their ends in superposed ways formed on the keyboard frame part, a plurality of rows of vertically reciprocable key-supporting rods, the rods of each row being guided in apertures in one of said slides, key operated levers having relatively foldable parts and positively connected with the key-supporting rods and type bars, and means controlled by the movement of the keyboard frame part for folding and unfolding said levers and for imparting a relative movement to the slides to move the rows of keysupporting rods into and out of compact inoperative relation with each other.

In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, type bars mounted on the main frame part, a plurality of pivot rods extending transversely of the main frame part and shiftable forwardly and rearwardly relative thereto, a plurality of groups of key operated levers each group of levers supporting a bank of keys and being pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on one of said rods, each of said levers being provided with pivotally connected horizontally foldable sections at opposite sides of its pivotal point, and positive operating connections between the rear ends of said levers and the type bars.
41.'In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, type bars mounted on the main frame part, a plurality of pivot rods extending transversely of the main frame part and shiftable forwardly and rearWa-rdly relative thereto, a plurality of groups of key operated levers each group of levers supporting a bank of keys and being pivotally mounted internicdiate their ends on one of said rods, each of said levers being provided with pivotally connected horizontally foldable sections at opposite sides of its pivotal point, positive operating connections between the rear ends of said levers and the type bars, and means for imparting a uniform relative movement between the banks of keys supported by said groups of levers.

In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, type bars mounted on the main frame part, a plurality of pivot rods extending transversely of the main frame part and shiftable forwardly and rearwardly relative thereto, a plurality of groups of key operated levers each group of levers supporting a bank of keys and being pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on one of said rods, each of said levers being provided with pivotally connected horizontally foldable sections at opposite sides of its pivotal point, positive operating connections between the rear ends of said levers and the type bars, means for imparting a uniform relative movement between the banks of keys supported by said groups of levers, and means for limiting the shifting movement of said horizontal pivot rods.

In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, type bars mounted on the main frame part, a keyboard movable horizontally relatively to the main frame part from a normal extended operative position to a more compact inoperative position in closer relation with the type bars, and horizontally collapsible levers pivotally supported on the main frame part and having positive constantly maintained connections with the keys of the keyboard and the type bars.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the type bars of a compactible key action embodying vertically rockable key-operated levers fulcrumed inti armediate their ends and having constantly maintained mechanical. connections with the type bars, said levers each having hinged laterally shiftable sections at both sides of its fulcrum.

In a typewriting machine, the combi nation with the type bars of a compactible key action embodying pivot-ally supported key-operated levers having constantly maintained mechanical connections with the type bars and each formed of a plurality of sections foldable horizontally relatively to each other and positively and pivot-ally connected together.
46. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a frame, upwardly and rearwardly movable type bars pivotally supported in the frame, and a compactible key action for actuating the type bars comprising horizontally collapsible key-operated levcrs pivotally supported on the frame in termediate their ends, and links pivotally held at their lower ends to the rear ends of said key-operated levers and pivotally connected at their upper ends with the type bars forwardly of the type bar pivots.
47. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame, upwardly and rearwardly movable type bars pivotally supported in the main frame, a keyboard having a plurality of banks of keys, horizontally collapsible levers pivotally supported in the main frame and positively connected with the keys and type bars at all times, and means whereby the banks of keys may be moved into compact relation with each other and simultaneously shifted bodily beneath the type bars to reduce the length of the machine from front to rear.
48. A typewriting machine having a horizontally compactible key action, and means whereby a uniform relative movement may be imparted to the parts of the key action when the key action is extended and compacted.
49. A typewriting machine having a horizontally compactible key action, and lazy tongs mechanism for imparting a uniform relative movement to the parts of the key action when the key action is tompacted and extended.
50. A. typewriting machine having a compactiblc keyboard comprising a space bar and a plurality of rows of keys supported in banks, means for shifting the space bar and the several banks of keys horizontally relatively to each other from their normal extended operative positions into more compact relation with each other, and horizontally collapsible pivotally supported levers forming constantly maintained comiections between the keys and the space bar and the devices operated thereby.
51. In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame'part, type bars supported on the main frame part. a
keyboard frame part slidably held to move into and out of the main frame part, a plurality of banks of keys shiftable relatively to the keyboard frame part and movable therewith into and out of the main frame part, horizontally foldable levers positively connected with the keys and the type bars. and means controlled by the movement of the keyboard frame part for imparting a uniform relative movement between the banks of keys.

In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, type bars supported on the main frame part, keyboard frame part slidably held to move into and out of the main frame part, a plurality of banks of keys shiftable relatively to the keyboard frame part and movable therewith into and out of the main frame part, horizontally foldable levers positively connected with the keys and the type bars,
and a lazy tongs mechanism operable by the movement of the keyboard frame part for imparting a uniform relative movement to the banks of keys.
53. In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, a keyboard frame part slidably held to the main frame part and movable from a normal extended operative position to a compact position within the main frame part, type bars mounted on the main frame part, a plurality of banks of keys, horizontally foldable levers positively connected with the keys and type bars for actuating the type bars when the keys are depressed, and means actuated the movement of the keyboard frame part into and out of the main frame part for shifting the banks of keys relatively to each other and the keyboard frame part and shifting the banks of keys bodily relatively to the type bars.

In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a mainframe part, a keyboard frame part slidably held to the main frame part and movable from a normal extended position to a compact position within the main frame part, type bars mounted on the main frame'part, a plurality of banks of keys, levers positively connected with the keys and type bars and having pivotally connected sections foldable horizontally relatively to each other, and means controlled by the movement of the'keyboard frame part into the main frame part for holding said key-operated levers and simultaneously shifting the banks of keys into closer relation with each other and moving said banks of keys within the main frame part. i

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, upwardly and rearwardly movable type bars pivotally supported on the main frame part, a keyboard frame part slidably held to move into and out of the main frame'part, a plurality of transversely extending slides supported in superposed ways on the keyboard frame part, a plurality of rows of key-supporting stems the stems of each row being guided in apertures in one of the slides and movable forwardly and rearwardly with the slide, a plurality of superposedtransversely extending pivot rods, a group of key operated levers pivotally supported on each of said rods and positively connected with one of said rows of stems and provided with pivotally connected sections foldable horizontally relatively to each other, links forming positive operating connections between the key operated levers and type bars, and lazy tongs mechanism operable by the slidable keyboard frame part for shifting the slides relatively to each other and to the pivot rods and for bodily shifting all of said slides and the pivot rods relatively to the type bars.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part, upwardly and rearwardly movable type bars pivotally supported on the main frame part, a keyboard frame part slidably held to move into and out of the main frame part, a plurality of transversely extending slides supported in superposed ways on the keyboard frame part, a plurality of rows of key-supporting stems the stems of each row being guided in apertures in one of the slides and movable forwardly and rearwardly with the slide, a plurality of superposed transversely extending pip-at rods, a group of key operated levers pivotally supported on each of said rods and positively connected with one of said rows of stems and provided with pivotally connected sections foldable horizontally relatively to each other, links form ing positive operating connections between the key operated levers and type bars, lazy tongs mechanism operable by the slidable keyboard frame part for shifting the slides relatively to each other and to the pivot rods and for bodily shifting all of said slides and the pivot rods relatively to the type bars, and means for limiting the extent of expansion of the lazy tongs mechanism.
61. In a collapsible typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part having an opening at its forward side through which the ke board is shiftable, type bars mounted on the main frame part, longitudinally collapsible key-operated levers pivotally supported within the main frame and normally extending forwardly beneath the type bars to points beyond the forward side of the main frame, a keyboard frame part slidably held to move into and out of the main frame part below the type bars, a plurality of rows of key-supporting stems connected withthe forward ends of the key-0perated levers, a plurality of transversely extending slides supported at their ends in the keyboard frame part and each provided with a row of apertures for guiding one row of kev stems, lazy tongs mechanism connected with said slides, and a frame plate hinged to the main frame part to swing upwardly and rearwardlv from a horizontal position to a position closing the opening in the main frame part.
62. In a collapsibletypewriting machine, the combination of a main frame part having an opening at its forward side through which the keyboard is shiftable, type bars mounted on the main frame part, longitudinally collapsible key-operated levers pivotally supported within the main frame and normally extending forwardly beneath the type bars to po nts beyond the forward side of he main frame. a keyboard frame part slidabl held to move into and out of the main frame part below the tyne bars. a plurality of rows of key-supporting stems connected with the forward ends of the keyoperated levers, a plurality of transversely extending slides supported at their ends in the keyboard frame part and each provided with a row of apertures for guiding one row of key stems, lazy tongs mechanism connected with said slides, and a frame plate hinged to the main frame part to swing upwardly and rearwardly from a horizontal position to a position closing the opening in the main frame part, and means on said frame plate for guiding the lazy tongs mechanism during movement thereof into and out of the main frame part.
63. A collapsible typewriting machine 15 comprising a main frame part, type bars mounted thereon, a plurality of longitudinally collapsible key-operated levers operatively connected to actuate the type bars, keys connected with the forward ends of said levers, lazy tongs mechanism for collapsing and extending said levers to shift the keys into and out ofv the main frame part, and means foldable upwardly in front ofthe main frame part when the machine is collapsed for supporting the forward portion of the lazy tongs mechanism when the machine is in its extended operative condition.
