Be it known that I, ARTHUR O. GRovER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Painesville, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use-' ful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in advertising devices of that type in which a series of movable curtains or exhibitors are successively moved into a position visible behind an opening in a casing, and the principal object of the invention is the provision of especial and efficient means for intermit tently and successively moving the display curtains into position behind the display opening.

Another object of the invention is the pro vision of an advertising device of this type in which the display curtains are compactly arranged to economize in the space occupied thereby and permit the utilization of a greater number of curtains in a given space.

With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds the invention comprises the novel features of construction, accompanied by elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.

Referring tothe drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. the numeral 5 indicates a casing provided in the front wall 6 with a display opening 7 through which the adver ising or other matter marked upon the movable curtains is visible.

A roller 8 is supported adjacent the front upper portion of the casing and its terminals are journaled in partitions 9 which are arranged adjacent the opposite side walls of the casing and provide lateral chambers 10 for the reception of the drive chains,'to be hereinafter described.

The r0ller.8 supports a plurality of ourtains 11 which are constructed of a durable and flexible material and are preferably detachably connected with the roller 8 by an approved type of fastener whereby the respective curtains may be interchanged or removed and replaced from time to time. The terminals of the curtains opposite the roller 8 are connected with rods 12 movable in the slots 13 formed in the partitions 9 and of such length as to project into the lateral chambers 10. Each slot 13 is of polygonal form and includes the front vertical portions 14, relatively narrow bottom horizontal way 15, inclined rear portion 16 which extends upwardly toward the back of the casing 5 and connects by horizontally disposed portion 17 to the upper terminal of the front vertical portion 14 forming a continuous passage through which the rods 12 are successively moved during operation of exhibitor.

The several rods are interconnected by flexible chains 18 arranged insideof the partitions 9 and of a length approximately corresponding to the length of the curtains 11. The'majority of the rods 12 normally lie in the relatively short horizontally disposed slotted portion 15 and the chains 18 depend therefrom into the lower portion of the casing. The chains connecting the front and rear rods of the group which is disposed within the relatively short horizontal fiat portion 15 extend upwardly from the rearmost rod over a guide wheel 19, forwardly and downwardly over the extremities of the roller 8 to the front rod of the group thereby forming endless chains connecting the terminals of the rods at each side of the casing and causing the curtains to be successively drawn upwardly toward the rear of the casing, forwardly under the top and dowpwardly along behind the display open-, mg

Endless drive chains 20 are arranged in the chambers 10 and extend over sprocket wheels 21 supported adjacent the four corners of the chambers upon shafts 22. The lower rear shaft 22 is connected by a train of gears23 with the drive shaft 24 of an electric motor 25whereby power is applied to the chains to constantly actuate the curtains for a prolonged period. Inwardly directed dogs 26 are secured at corresponding points to the two chains and are engageable with .the'terminals of the rod 12 lying at the upper terminal of the vertical port-1011 1 1 of the slot so as to draw the rod down and move the curtain attached thereto into display position behind the opening 7, the chain connecting the downwardly moving rod with the next successive rod operating to draw the latter to the position at the upper terminal of the slot 14 previously occupied by the downwardly moving rod. The dog 26 engages the-terminals of the rod 12 at the upper terminal of the slot 14 each time. the chains complete a trip over the sprocket-wheels 23 and in'this manner the several exhibiting curtains are successively moved into position behind the opening 7 and during the period of concealment the curtains are compactly arranged in a group depending fromtheroller 8,as clearly shown in Fig. 2. It will be understood that as the rod 12 moves into the relatively short horizontal slot portion 15 it moves out of the path of the dog 26 permitting the latter Y to .pass unobstructed and owing to the length of the chain and the time consumed in the dog traveling betweenthe series of rods 12 and the roller 8, the respective curtains are left visible for a period of time sufiicient for the average person to read or appreciate the matter marked thereon.

What I claim is:. I 1. In combination, a casing having a display opening in the front wall thereof, a roller supported in the casing, a plurality of flexible. display curtains supported by the roller successively movable to' display position behind said opening, means to successively engage and move the curtains into display position behind the opening, and connections between the terminals of the curtains opposite the roller whereby the movement of one curtain is transmitted to V 'the. other during the movement of the respective curtains. e a v 2. In combination, a casing having a display'opening, a plurality of flexible curtains supported by said roller successively movable to display position behind said'opening, rods carried by'said curtains, means for guiding the movement of the rods, means engageable with a rod lying in a position above the display opening for depressing the rod and moving the curtain carried thereby into display position, and connections between the rods whereby the movement of one curtain is'transmitted to the next succeeding one.

5. In combination, a casing having a display opening, thereima roller supported in the casing, a plurality of flexible curtains attached at one end to the roller and located behind the opening successively movable to display position behind said opening, rods carried by the curtains, means for guiding the rods downwardly in front of the roller, upwardly behind the latter and forwardly above the roller, drive chains arranged adjacent the ends of the rods, and dogs carried by the chains engageable with the rods as the latter reach a predetermined location in the casing whereby the curtains are successively moved into display position behind the opening.

6. In combination, a casing having a display opening therein, a roller supported in thecasing, a plurality of flexible display curtains supported by the roller successively movable to display position behind "said opening, rods carried by the curtains, guide termined location within the casing wheremeans for the rods, chains arranged outby the curtains are successively moved intodisplay position behind the opening, and
