ATENT QFFlCE.
HENRY T. KRUSE, OF GULL LAKE, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
RAIL.
Application led February 3', 1920.
T 0 all 'whom't may concern Be it known that I, HENRY T. KRUsE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, a resident of the town of Gull Lake, Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rails and means for securing the same in position, and the objects of the invention are to facilitate assembling the rail and positioning it on a tie, to prevent lateral displacement of the rail when so positioned,
to provide means whereby a tie will be properly engaged with the road bed without liability of displacement due to vibration or other causes, and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required of them. j
Other objects will be made clear as the specification develops.
So that the nature of my invention may be better understood reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which an embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a tie showing the improved rail mounted thereon. Y
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the rail and tie.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the tie.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view looking from the underside of the means for locking the rail against lateral displacement.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of a rail.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the side members of the rail.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the means for securing one of the locking members shown in Fig. 4 in engagement with the tie.
Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the same.
Fig. 9 is a plan view of the securing means shown in Fig. `7.
Like characters of reference refer to like Darts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings; A represents the improved rail and B the improved tie, the rail comprising a member 10 consisting of a ball head and the integral web 11, which has an orifice 12 therethrough.
The rail 10 is held between a pair of angle members 13- each provided at the lower end with a projecting flange 14 which holds the Specification of Letters Patent..
Patented oet. 12, 1920.
Serial No. 356,010.
vertical arms of the angles in spaced relation to accommodate the web 11 and the said vertical arms are provided with orifices 15 designed to be arranged in alinement with the orice 12. I
The rail A comprising the Amember 10 and the angle members 13 is held in position by a pair of clamping members 16 and 17 locatedon opposite sides of the rail and provided with pin projections 8 and 9 which engage with the orifices 15 andl2.
The clamping member 17 is provided with an angle shaped locking member 18r on the lower face and a pin lockingk member 2O provided with an enlarged head 21.
The tie B is provided with a plurality of keyhole slots 22 and 23 and a slot 24 arranged in alinement with keyhole slots 23 and 22 and the angle shaped locking member 18 on the clamping-member 17 engages the slot 24 and the pin locking member 2O engages one of the keyhole slots 23.
It will be clear that on longitudinal movement of the' member 17 the locking member 18 and the enlarged head 21 of the pin locking member 20 engage with the underface of the top of the tie B.
The clamping member 16 is provided with a pin locking member 25 provided with an enlarged head 26, and the outer end of the clamping member is provided with a recess 27. v
The `pin lockingmember Y25 engages with one of the keyholeslots 22 and on longitudinal movement of the clamp 16 the enlarged head 26 of the said locking member engages with the under face of the top of the tie B.
A locking member C is formed with a center cylindrical body portion 29 having an eccentric cylindrical flange 30 on the lower end, and a rectangular flange 31 on the upper end, the cylindrical flange 30 being provided with a projecting tongue 32, and this eccentric flange 30 and tongue 32 engage with the outer keyhole slot 22 when the clamp 16 has been positioned.
After the flange 30 and the tongue 32 pass through-the slot 22 the locking member is rotated so that the tongue 32 underlies the `V:lower face of the tie B, and the upper flange 31 engages with the outer end of the clamping member 16, so securing the locking and the clamping member in position.
A key 28 passes through the locking mem-i ber and is arranged to prevent the said member being rotated to unlock the same. The
- the scope of the claims, constructed Withoutv key 28 and head of the locking member are inclosed by a cap 34.
The tie is-form`ed With an upper portion of inverted channel formation having its lateral Walls diverging as shown at 35, the Walls terminating in outtnrned flanges 36.
The tie B is closed by a bottom member 37 having its longitudinal edges '3,8 formed with inclined U-shaped edges which engage struction-of the tie. z Y
The bottom member 37 becomes embedded in -the railroad bed and is prevented from moving olf the U-shaped inclined. edges, so
the lianves 36 andV Complete the. boxy yoonlthat thegtie is properly anchored in place.
, The rail Vand the tie can be readilyl assembled 'and arenot liable to get ont ci' repair.
As many -ehanges conld `be made in the above construction andV many Widely diiiei-, ent embodiments of my invention Within v departing -romjthe spirit or scope thereof,
Vit is intended Jtfhat all-mattercontained in the accompanying specificationr andadrawings.shallbe interpreted as illustrative'and not inf a limiting sense. v
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A device of the classl described comprising a ball head having a depending Web,
a pair of angle members having progecting to space the angle members to accommodate the depending Web, a pair of clamping members, a boX tie, and means whereby the clamping members will make sliding engagement and be locked to the tie to hold theV Yangle members and rail in position. Y
2. A device of the class described comprising a rail member, angle members embracing the rail, a boX tie, clamping members adjustably mounted on the 4box tie and rdesigned to secure the rail and angle members in position, and looking members having eccentrically arranged flanges and key vmeans for holding the clamping members in locked position.
In Witness Whereolf have hereunto set portions at the lower end designed to abut Y i
