CARTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented' 00u12, 1920.
Application filed March 10, 1920. Serial No."364,634.
To all 207mm t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY F URsTE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and 'State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartons, of which the following is a'speclfication.
The object of my invention is to provide a folded carton that will not fall'apart when the lid is raised.
Another object is to provide a carton, the ends of which can be easily folded, and locked in such folded form.
Another object is to provide a carton wherein the inside wrapper, used heretofore because the boxes were not formed substantial enough to contain the contents, may be dispensed with.
Another object is to provide a cartonl that will not require an outer wrapper to hold the box intact, thereby permitting advertising matter to be placed on the carton itself7 such advertisingr being exhibited continuously while the carton is used and not subject to destructionl immediately the carton is opened.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein 'and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l, is a partlysectional and partly broken perspective view showing somewhat diagrammatically a box embodying my invention when assembled.
Fig. 2, is a plan view of an end section of an unassembled carton embodying my invention.
Fig. 3, is a: modification of the locking member forming a detail of my invention.
My invention is of a folded carton i wherein the end sections are so constructed that they may be positively locked in relation to one another when the carton is set up.
The carton A has a front a, a bottom b, a back c and a top d. Attached to either end of the front a is an inner end ply a', having a slot L2 formed between the front a and the inner end ply a. A slot a3 is formed in the end inner ply. A ange is formed on c.
On the side of bottom b is formed a. tongue b. A lap b2 is attached to the tongue Zn and to the side of the inner end ply a. On the side of back c is formed an outer end ply c having a lug 02 extending therefrom. Attached to the lugo2 is a lock Y c3. A side ap c4 is attached to the outer end ply c and extends adjoiningly to they top. Similar series of extensions are formed on both ends of front a. bottom b andback c. .'The top flap d is attached to the longitudinal edge of the top d.
The carton is set up as follows. The inner end plies af, tongues band laps b2 on both sides of front@ and bottom b are bent on the scored lines e. These bent sections are turned on the scored lines so lthat ythey will be on the same side of the front and the bottom Thefront a, together with the inner end plies a', arethen bent upon the scored lines f and f so that the front will be atV rightangles to the bottom when so turned,
and cause theedge of inner endplies a,V
adjacent to scored line f, to contact the bottom The front a and sections a cause the lap b to turn upon the scored lines f and g, placing lap b2 between the plies a and tongues b. The tongues will take a Vposition adjacent to plies a. The end of tongue Zn is then inserted through the slot 1.3. rlhe Hanges a* arethen turnedon the scored lines it. The back c and top d are then turned on the scored line 7c so'thatlthe back contacts the lflanges at. The outer end plies c are turned on the scoredline'mjso that they will extend over and cover the' sections a and Z9. The lugcon which the lock c3 has been turned down on scored line s so as to contact the Hat surface of yc2 together with the lock 03 are turned on scored line t and inserted through the slot ci. The lock c3 .is then extended, thereby binding the outer end plies to the inner end plies and forming the end of the box. The side flaps c4 are bent on scored lines n toward the center of the carton so formed. The top Z is bent on the scored line p so as to close the top of the box. The top flap d. is bent on the scored line 1- and is inserted between the front, the top and the side flaps. thereby making a closed container.
In the modified form of locking'member shown in Fig. 3, the lock c3 is not bent downward upon lug 02. In folding a carton having a locking member of this shape, the edge 06 of the outer end ply is moved so as to be slightly below the bottom. The lock member c3 is then inserted through the slot a2. The edge c6 is then moved toward the bottom until it registers therewith. The
rounded corner c5 on the lug c2 will enter the slot a2. The lock will then securely engage inside the carton, thereby binding the inner and outer end plies.V
The slot a3 on the inner end ply may. be
dispensed with where the tongue engaging feature is not desired. The tongue then can` have any shape or form that will permit the to the tongue and the inner end ply, a back having an outer end ply, .with a lug and a loclrattachedthereto, the loci; and the lug being adapted to be inserted through the slot between thefrontand the inner end ply, and a top. Y
2. A folded carton comprising a front having a slotted inner end ply attached thereto. and having a slot between them and a yflange on the inner end ply, a bottom having a'tongue, Vadapted to be inserted through the slotted inner end ply, attached thereto anda lap attached to the tongue and the inner end ply, a back having an outer end plywith a lug and a loclt attached thereto, the lock being adapted to be folded upon the lug and to be inserted with the lug through vthe slot'between the front and the inner end ply, anda top.
3. A folded carton comprising a front havingV a slotted inner end ply attached thereto and having a slot between them and a flange on-the inner end ply, a bottom having a tongue, adapted to be inserted through the slotted inner end ply, attached thereto and a lap attached to the tongue andthe inner end ply, a back having an outer end ply with a lug and a lock attached thereto, the lock being adapted to be folded upon the through the slotted inner end ply attached thereto, anda lap attached to the tongueV and the inner end ply, a back having Van outer .end ply with a lug having a rounded Vcorner and a lock attached thereto, the lock and the lug being adapted to be yinserted through the slot between the front and the inner end ply, the lock engaging the inner end ply and the front at theirjunction, and a to f 5.PA folded carton comprising a front having an inner end ply attached thereto and having a slot between them, a'bottom having a tongue attached thereto, a back lug and to be inserted with the lug through Y having an outer end. ply with a lug and a Y lock attached thereto, the lock and the lug being adapted to be inserted through the slot between the yfront and the inner end ply.
6. A folded cartonk comprising a front having aninner end ply attached thereto and having a slot between them and a flange on the inner end ply, a bottom having a tongue attached thereto, a back having an outerend ply with a lug and a lock attached thereto, the lock and lug being adapted to be inserted through they slot between the front and inner end ply. Y
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name, this 6th day of March. 1920. Y
