UNITED STATES GEORGE KELLEY, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON.
POULTRY-FEEDING APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 0011.12, 1920.
Application filed February 26,1918, Serial No. 219,198. Renewed August 12, 1920. Serial No. 403,148. 7
T 0 (LZZ 10/ 20777, it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonen KELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Portland, the county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poultry- Feeding Appliances, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of the specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates more particularly to a device for feeding poultry automatically.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for feeding poultry at any desired time or place without the attendant being actually present at the point of feeding, unless desired, and to do this at a great saving of time and labor, and at the same time insuring more eflicient method of feeding.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan of device with cover removed. Fig. 2 is front elevation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of distributing tube showing a motor drive. Fig. 4 is end elevation of the distributing tube.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the feeding device showing a circuit closing clock of ordinary type and Fig. 6 is an elevation of the feeding device in which the circuit is closed by a switch or push button.
Like-letters and figures of reference in the several figures indicate the same or similar parts.
A is magazine for holding scratch feed.
A is cover.
A is bale. V
A is funnel shaped'floor in magazine.
A is mouth of funnel.
A are legs for supporting device.
A is base for holding entire device.
B is rotatable distributing tube.
B is hole for C B is hole'in B to receive A B are lips for controlling size of feeding radius.
13 is adjusting screw for B.
C is supporting and driving spindle for B C is incased motor for driving B through C 1 C is grain or feed.
It will be seen by inspection of drawing that when grain is placed in the magazine it will pass into the tube 13 until the grain reaches the mouth of A which condition will prevent the further escape of grain from the magazine. 7
It will be seen that any rotary movement of B will expel the contents of the tube by centrifugal force and scatter it to a distance controlled by the speed of the motor, distributing the grain along the radius of the feeding circle as desired, by adjusting lips l? with screws As long as the tube revolves while grain is being fed from magazine the feeding will continue, but as soon as revolving ceases the grain supply is cut off from the tube.
Fig. 5 shows a circuit closing clock of ordinary type, which permits of feeding different flocks at widely separated points at predetermined times, without the presence of the poultryman.
A represents the mechanism of the feeder which is supported by legs A on base A. B is the distributing tube. W is one wire of an electric circuit to which all the motors are wired. WV is the companion wire which passes through battery W Fig. 6 shows a method of operating one or more feeders from a distance in which the parts are the same'as in Fig. 4, except that the clock. W button or knifeswitch W which of course requires a manual opening and closing of the power circuit at the desired times.
Being motor driven it is apparent that the device can be operated from any desired point 'at any desired time, either by hand or by automatically closing the motor circuit bvclock work.
While I have thus described and illustrated my invention, it is not'my intention that it shall be limited to this particular form or shape, but that it shall cover all modifications of same that fall fairly within the appended claims.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a feeding device for poultry consisting of a food containing means in combination with a rotatable distributing means. constituting a tube mounted horizontally upon a vertical shaft member, said tube member having an opening in the center of its upper side for the purpose of. re
is substituted by a push ceiving the grain from the containing means and having at each end opening of the tube an adjustable lip constituting a strip of metalsecured at one end to the side or" the tube and having the opposite end bent to offer an obstruction to the passage of grain, V
and having near its center an adjustlng screw for the purpose of varying the radius of distribution and especially for narrowing or widening its path of delivery, together with a means for rotating the said tube by power.
2'. In a device for feeding poultry at a distance or at intervals, consisting of a food containing means having funnel shaped floor in combination with a tube member rotatably mounted beneath the containing member and having an opening at its cen ter for the purpose of receiving the food from the funnel of the containing member,
said tube having ends, one-side of each of said ends being fitted with an adjustable lip which can be set to offer more or less obstruction to the escape of grain, a rotating means for said distributing tube and a means for regulating the application of power from any point, substantially as described and illustrated.
3. In a feeding device for poultry, consisting of a food containing means constituting a cylindrical magazine having a removable cover and a funnel shaped floor, a food distributing means 'constituting a horizontal tube mounted on a motor driven, vertical shaft member having at the center of said tube an opening through which it receives grain from the funnel member and at the end of which tube are located distributing means constituting a metal strip secured at scribed.
GEORGE KELLEY.
