Description

S. G. SHAPIRO.
V SHOE HEEL. APPL'ICATION'FILED 050.8. l9l9.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
UNITED STATES PA TENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL Gn SHAPIRO, 0F NEW YORK, 1\T. Y.
SHOE-HEEL.
Application led December 8, 1919. Serial No. 343,278.
1 0 all w hom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. SHArIRo, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Heels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to heels for shoes, and more particularly to an improved construction of so-called high heels for womens shoes.
It is an object of the invention to provide a simple, practical and durable heel of the character referred to which comprises a hollow metal body and a renewable shockabsorbent tread.
A further object is to provide an 'improved metal heel capable of economical manufacture and efiicient service.
Another object is to provide a heel of the character mentioned which possesses features of structural superiority and functional advantage.
Other objects and advantages will be in part noted hereinafterin connection with the following description of the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein-- Figure l is a side elevation of the improved heel mounted;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation partially in section; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the plane of the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
In general, the heel shown comprises a metal body part l, hollow from top to bottom except for a metal ceiling or partition 2 intermediate the length of the heel and eX- tending horizontally across the opening. so as to divide the same into an upper opening or chamber 3 and a lower opening or chamber 4. The said partition 2 has in its center a hole or aperture 5 of sufficient size to permit the threaded portion of a screw 6 to pass through it. The head of the screw 6 .1s molded or otherwise firmly embedded 1n the upper portion of a plug 7, the bottom portion of which plug preferably forms a flange 8 which flange rests against the lower extremities of the walls 9 and is so sha ed as to conform therewith, so that the p ug and tread portion are integral as shown in my previous application No. 325,249, led September 20, 1919.
The plug 7 is inserted into the lower opening or chamber 4 of the heel and the threaded portion of the screw 6 is inserted through the aperture 5 in the partition or ceiling 2. One or more nuts l0 are then threaded over the end of the screw thus firmly locking the screw and holding the plug 7 firmly in position in the lower opening or chamber 4. Said locking may also be accomplished by riveting the end of the screw.
It will be noted that in this construction the plug is of substantial length so that when the tread portion of the plug is worn down it can be replaced by a tread which can be fastened to the plug by nails of substantial length. Moreover7 it is possible by this construction for a cobbler to employ any of the rubber heels now on the market on my heels, since nails of sufficient length can be used to fasten them firmly in the heels. Another advantage of this construction isv that since the plug is firmly locked in position by the screw and nut it is not 'necessary that the plug should be manufactured with such accuracy as to lit perfectly the opening in the heel, as in previous inventions of mine in which it is vnecessary for operation that the plug should be more perfectly shaped and should always be slightly larger than the opening. By my present invention, it is possible to utilize manyrof the advantages of these former inventions in constructions in which such care is not given to measurements either of the opening in the heel or of the plug.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A shoe heel including in combination a hollow metal heel body having an opening from top to bottom therethrough, a metal partition or ceiling intermediate the length of said heel extending horizontally across the said opening, an aperture in said ceiling adapted to receive a screw, a non-metallic plug adapted for insertion in the lower portion of said opening, a screw having its head portion molded into the upper portion of said plug and its threaded portion extending upward therefrom through the aperture of the partition and one or more nuts adapted to be threaded over said screw to anchor said plug in place.
- is rmly embedded in the upper portion of said plug and 'which extends through the aperture in the partition and onto lwhich one or more nuts are threaded romfabove to 10 look it firmly in place.
In witness whereof I afx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL G. sHAPiRo.
