AUTOMATIC PATTER'N-REVERSER FOR LOOMS.
To all whom 2'23 may concern:
Beit known that I, OVIAS RoDInR, a citizen of the United States, resident of New Market, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Automatic Pattern-Reversers for Looms; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention pertains generally to looms for weaving figured fabrics having a jacquard mechanism for controlling the shed of the warp threads by means of pattern cards connected together in the manner of a chain and fed to the loom one at a time The particular object of the present invention is to provide a simple, positive and reliable device which may be attached to any Jacquard loom for automatically reversing the movement of the pattern card cylinder, roll or prism to feed the pattern cards into operative position and arrest the reverse movement at any card in the chain, such reversal being necessary whenever a fault occurs in the pattern of the cloth being woven and it becomes necessary to remove the filler. This operation at the present time is performed by hand, the weaver pulling a cord attached to the pawl reversing mechanism at the end of the pattern card cylinder or prism. if the loom be not stopped immediately the fault occurs, but is permitted to weave one or two. hundred or more picks before stopping, a considerable amount of time and labor is lost while the filling is being picked out and the pattern cards turned back to the proper place to begin again; but by means of this reversing mechanism hereinafter described, the operation of turning back the pattern is automatically accomplished with ease and at greater speed than by hand and the pattern cards successively brought into proper position with more accuracy.
A further object of the invention relates to an automatic locking mechanism for the reversing device to prevent the weaver op crating the reverser while the pattern feed roll is so near the bank of push rods or needles as to damage the pattern, said locking mechanism disengaging the reverser to Specification of Letters Patent.

The above features of the invention together wlth various details of construction will be described hereinafter more in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of so much of a Jacquard loom as is necessary to illustrate the invention.

in the drawings, 10 indicates a power loom of well-known type, such as the Stafford loom, above which on a gauntree 11 is bolted the acquard mechanism 12, shown diagrammatically only. The loom 10 includes sides frames 13, 14; a connecting bar 15 above and between the side frames; a shaft 16 journaled on frames 13, 14 and havin cranks 17 for vibrating the lay; a pulley 18 on one end of the shaft over which a driving belt 19 passes, and a crank wheel 20 on the opposite end of said shaft. A harness distributing board or compart board 21 is also shown. Jacquard harness, indicated at 22, extends as usual from the loom 10 up to the jacquard mechanism 12. Slidable longitudinally in bearings on the frame of the acquard mechanism are two horizontal rods 23 provided with bearings 24 at one end for the journals of the usual card prism or cylinder 25 that feeds the pattern cards 26 to and from the jacquard mechanism in well known manner, this movement being performed by an angle lever 27 fulcrumed in a bracket 28 on the gauntree 11, the upstanding arms of said lever being connected by a link 29 on each side of the jacquard frame to the horizontal rods 23. A connecting rod 30 journale-d at one end to the crank wheel 20 of the loom and at its other end to the horizontally extending arm of angle lever 27, serves to rock said lever and cause the card cylinder 25 to advance toward and recede from the jacquard mechanism 12. At each recession of the card cylinder 25, one or the other of a pair of hooks 31 engages one of a se *ies of pins on one end of said cylinder and causes it to make a partial revolution to the right or left, each movement being suflicient to present a new card to the mechanism.
The mechanism above described is com mon to all Jacquard looms and its operation will be understood by those conversant with weaving. It is well known that at times, faults occur in the pattern of goods woven, these faults being caused by some defect in or failure of cotiperative action of the jacquard mechanism, thereby necessitating a stoppage of the loom and a reversal of the jacquard to permit the removal of the weft or filler threads of so much of the goods as have been improperly woven. This operation which istedious and often consumes considerable time is simplified, expedited and made automatic by the improvement now to be described in detail.
Bolted on the outside of side frame 13 of the loom above shaft 16 is a bracket 33, provided with two spaced bearings 34 for a short horizontal rock shaft 35 having also a limited longitudinal movement in said bearings. On the outer end of the rock shaft 35 is mounted an arm 36 secured to the shaft by a set bolt 37 which permits adjustment of said arm longitudinally of the shaft and rotatably about its axis. The arm 36 is set to be engaged under certain conditions by a roller 38 on the outer face of loose pulley 18 and rock the shaft 35. A11 arm 39 is similarly mounted on the inner end of rock shaft within the side frame 13 and projects toward the front of the loom. Attached to the free end of arm 39 is one end of a cord 40 that extends upwardly and fastened by its other end to one end of a lever 41 fulcrumed between its ends on a finger depending from one 'of the bearings 24 of the card cylinder 25. An upright pawl 42 is pivoted to the opposite end of lever 41 that, when the lever is rocked, engages one of a series of pins 43 on one end of the card cylinder and turns the cylinder in reverse direction to feed back the cards 26. Fixed on rock shaft 35 is a collar 44 circumferentially grooved into which groove projects the lower end of an arm 45 fixed on the rear end .of a rock shaft 46, journaled in the 100m frame 13, the forward end of which shaft at the front of the loom carrying a hand lever 47 which when moved to the right slides the shaft 35 endwise in its bearings to bring arm 36 in position to be engaged by the roller 38 7 position, as determined by an adjustable finger' 50 on the shaft bearing on bracket 33, when the roller 38 passes the arm 36, it also retracts the shaft 35 when the hand lever 47 is released. For holding hand lever 47 in operative position while a number of cards are moving in reverse direction and to automatically dlsengage the lever to permlt return ofcotiperating parts to normal position, there is pivoted to the front of the compart board 21 a pawl 51 having a tooth 52 to engage a lug 53 on the hand lever when the latter is moved to operative position and so hold said lever until the pawl is disengaged. A cord 54 fastened on the end of pawl 51 has a hook on its free end to permit its connection to a card 26, which, when it starts to rise, draws up the cord 54, disengages the pawl from the hand lever and permits the spring 48 to return rock shaft 35 to inoperative position.
To prevent the possibility of the weaver operatmg the reverse mechanism while the card cyllnder 25 is so close to the bank of push rods or needles a as to damage the pattern or needles, a safety pawl 55 is pivoted on the compart board 21 near the frame 14 to engage the hooked end of a rod 56, slidable in bearings on the compart or harness distributing board and pivoted at its opposite end to the hand lever 47. A spring 57 tends to hold pawl 55 downwardly in engagement with the hooked end of rod 56, the pawl being disengaged intermittently by a cord 58 attached at its ends to the pawl and to the lever 27 for moving the card cylinder 25 to and from the needles a.
The operation of this device is very simple and by its means correction of faults in woven fabrics are quickly and easily made. When the weaver discovers a fault in the material, he immediately swings the hand lever 47 to the right, sliding rock shaft 35 in its bearings to bring the arm 36 into position to be acted on by roller 38. This action rocks the shaft, depresses arm 39, and through the cord 40 actuates lever 41 and pawl 42 to reverse the card cylinder and bring into operative position on said cylinder the card last used before the fault occurred. After picking out the faulty filling, the loom can be started and the weaving continued. If only a few picks are at fault, the weaver holds the lever in position until correction is made. Should however the fault extend over fifty or more picks, the hand lever is held by pawl 51 and the cord 54 hooked over the connecting chain between two pattern cards 26 and as soon as this part of the card chain starts to=rise, it pulls the cord 54, lifts pawl 51 and disengages the hand lever 47 and shaft 35. The proper point on the pattern chain for attaching the cord 54, is quickly learned by the weaver as there are usually twenty cards in each fold and by a simple calculation ,the point of attachment is soon found. The downward movement of lever 27 to move the pattern cylinder and cards toward the needles a also loosens cord 58 and permits the safety pawl 55 to engage and lock against movement rod 56 and the reversing device.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In combination with a loom having a pattern card chain and automatic means for intermittently feeding said card chain in a forward direction, of independent means for reversing the movement of the card chain, means operable by the driving mechanism of the loom for actuating said reversing means, manually operable means for optionally engaging said last named means with and disengaging it from the driving mechanism, means for locking said manually operable means in position to automatically maintain reversal of the pattern cards, and a disengageable connection between said locking means and any predetermined card of the pattern chain for arresting said reversing means when said card starts to move toward the feeding mechanism.
2. In combination with a loom having a pattern card chain and automatic means for intermittently feeding said card chain in a forward direction, of independent means for reversing the movement of the card chain, means operable by the driving mechanism of the loom for actuating said reversing means, manually operable means for optionally engaging said last named means with and disengaging it from the driving mechanism, and means for holding said manually operable means immovable at one period in each cycle of movement of the loom.
3. In combination with a loom having a pattern card chain, a pattern card cylinder or prism, automatic means for intermittently rotating said cylinder, and a lever for moving said cylinder bodily in a straight line, of independent means for reversing the movement of said pattern cards, manually operable means for causing the engagement of said reversing means with the driving mechanism of the loom, av lock for holding said manually operable means immovable at each bodily movement of the card cylinder toward the loom, and a connector between said lock and the aforesaid lever.
4. In combination with a loom having a pattern card chain, a pattern card cylinder and means for intermittently rotating said cylinder in a forward direction, of independent reversing means for the cylinder, a shaft slidable longitudinally and adapted to be rocked by the main driving mechanism of the loom, an arm on said shaft, a connection between said arm and the reversing mechanism for operating the same, and a hand lever for engaging said shaft with the driving mechanism.
5. In combination with a loom having a pattern card chain, a pattern card cylinder, and means for intermittently rotating said cylinder in a forward direction, of independent reversing means for the cylinder, a shaft slidable longitudinally, an arm on said shaft adapted to be rocked by the loose pulley of the loom at each rotation, a second arm on said shaft, a connection between said arm and the reversing means for operating the same, a hand lever for sliding said shaft to engage the first named arm with the loose pulley, and a pawl for locking said hand lever and shaft in operating position.
6. In combination with a loom having a pattern card chain, a pattern card cylinder, and means for intermittently rotating said cylinder in a forward direction, of independent reversing means for the cylinder, a shaft slidable longitudinally, an arm on said shaft adapted to be rocked by the loose pulley of the loom at each rotation, a second arm on said shaft, a connection between said arm and the reversing means for operating the same, a hand lever for sliding said shaft to engage the first named arm with the loose pulley, a pawl for locking said hand lever and shaft in operating position, and a connection between said pawl and a predetermined card of the pattern chain.
7. In combination with a loom having a pattern card chain, a pattern card cylinder or prism, automatic means for intermittently rotating said cylinder in a forward direction, and a lever for moving said cylinder bodily in a straight line, of independent reversing means for the cylinder, a shaft slidable longitudinally, an arm on said shaft adapted to be rocked by the loose pulley of the loom at each rotation, a second arm on said shaft, a connection between said arm and the reversing means for operating the same, a hand lever for sliding said shaft to engage the first named arm with the loose pulley, a pawl for locking said hand lever and shaft in operating position, a safety pawl pivoted to the loom, a connector between said safety pawl and the lever for moving the card cylinder, and means connected to the hand lever and engageable by said safety pawl for holding the lever inoperative and immovable at one period in each cycle of movement of the loom.
S. In a loom of the class described having an independent reversing means for the card cylinder, of means for operating said reversing means actuated directly by the driving mechanism of the loom, manually operable means causing the engagement of said operating means with the driving mechanism and holding them engaged, and a connection for disengaging said means attachable to a predetermined card of the pattern chain of the loom.
