Description
H. H. BERRY.
ELECTRIC FIRE.
APPLICATION FILED 00T 3,19I9.
1.354,594. Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
par Q UNITED STATES HERBERT HENRY BERRY, 0F LONDON, ENGL-AND.
ELECTRIC FIRE.
Maasai.
Application inea october 3, 1919.
To LZZ 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT HENRY BERRY, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of the Switch House, 86 Newman street, London, W. l, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Electric Fires, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionrelates to electric fires of the kind in which imitation fuel is arranged over electric lamps and in which rotary flicker-producing devices are employed to produce tire-like effects.
According to the invention I arrange a resistance in a suitable case below the fire to produce both the requisite heat and a glow eect, said case being movable so that it can be employed to support a kettle or other vessel for heating purposes.
rIhe imitation fuel is preferably arranged over a wire-work frame inside which are the electric lamps, the cover or top of the frame being movable to give access to the lamps said top having on its underside fans or propellers to produce the icker. The fans are held by any suitable means and have preferably a central pivot of the pin and inverted cup type.
The accompanying drawings illustrate by way of example how my invention can be carried out.
Figure 'l shows a dog grate a to which my invention is applied.
Fig. 2 is a side view of in Fig. l. A
Fig. 3 shows a similar stove with a modiiication of the invention.
Fig. 4 shows a wire frame or basket supporting fuel and having a hinged cover on the underside of which the fans are mounted. This frame and fuel can be tted into any suitable fire place orstove and additional fuel added, or'all the fuel may be loose.
Fig. 5 shows a fan and its bracket.
The basket or wire frame b contains the lamps c c and has fuel LZ secured to it. Other fuel loose or attached may be used. The cover ,f of the frame supports the fans e by means of brackets g and, as can be seen in F ig. 5, these fans have hollow centers the grate shown Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920. Serial No. 328,147.
pins ZL, a small prevent the fans position (as shown by line and dot in F ig.
2) and supported'by chains m.
Instead of pivoting the case Z it may be simply stood on edge or turned from that position so as to stand upright as shown in Fig. 3.
The resistances in the case Z and the lamps c o are preferably on diiferent branches of an electric circuit so that either may be used without the other and when used together the lamps and the imitation fuel with the flicker devices produce a very realistic fire and the resistance in the case produces the heat necessary for effective warming purposes in addition to which the case Z may have a silica or other such translucent. front so that the glow of the resistance appears to be from the fire and when required, as above stated, a vessel or other article to be heated may be placed on the case.
The pattern or style of the lire place may vary as required and obviously the shape of the parts forming the invention maybe altered as desired without departing from 'the spirit of the invention. Gas lights could be used instead of the lamps c c.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An electric fire producing apparatus, in combination with. fuel-simulating supporting means comprising an openwork metal guard, a movable top to said guard, an electric lamp in said guard, a fan supported by the said top and positioned over` the lamp, and a heating means including a resistance, said heating means being arranged for movement into a position to cause the glow of its resistance to simulate 'a fire reiiection and also arranged for movement into a position to support a cooking vessel.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the I resence of two witnesses.
H RBERT HENRY BERRY.
Witnesses:
HENRY FAIRBROTHER, JAMES THOMSON.
