In the ordinary construction of hair clipping devices the reciprocatory blade is rig'- idly secured to the handle, and as a Consequence the operator has difliculty in con-r veniently holding the same during the hair clipping process, inasmuch as the blade must be retained at different `angles or inclinations during the operation thereof.`
The ordinary constructionI of such devices has the toothed guard thereof-in the nature of a flat plate, and consequently the' same can not be held in contact with the head of the person operated on, especially when hair is being clipped above the neck, and asa consequencel the barber can not accurately cut hair above the neck, this portion of the nplishedby a construction, `'combination and hair being severed with a scissors. In addition to thisthe ordinary construction of hair clipping devices has its cutting blade provided with teeth at only one of its edges and the guard therefor likewise provided with teeth only at one of its edges, so that the depth ofthe cut would be the same throughout did not the barber holdthe device at various angles.
It may be considered the object of the present invention to produce in a single article; of this class motor, operated means which will overcome all of the foregoing objections and afford other .points of supeiority and advantages over the ordinary construction of such implements.v p
It is a still further object of the invention to produce a hair clipping apparatus that shall comprise only a1-'few simple parts easily associated or disassembled, as for repairs or cleaning, one which may beoperated in an easy' manner and which will materially assist the barber in hair 'clipping operations.
The -foregoing objects may be accomoperative arrangement of parts such as illustrated by 'theacco'mpanying drawings, in which:

' The head includes a guard 17 that comprises a memberwhich has its outer surface rounded both transversely and longitudinally, as indicated by the numeral 18, and has its edges provided with spaced teeth 19 and 2O respectively. The teeth 19, from the outer edge'of the'g'uard are cut at an angle providing the 'outer edges Vthereof with straight surfaces 21, and these straight surfaces arrange the active and inner edgesof the teeth a suitable distance above the outer edges thereof, or the edges formed on the rounded surface 19 of the guard. The guard 17, from the edges of the teeth 19 and 20 are arranged at an inward angle, and the said guard, in aline with the said angle is provided with vstraight surfaces 22 against which the inclined lower corners of the reciprocatory blade 23, inward of the teeth 24 and 25 formed on the said edges, are designed to rest. The guard 17 is dished upon lar surface 28 whichvis preferably arranged flush with the outer edges of the ribs 27 and which is centrally provided with a\ round The central portion of ,the blade 23 rests on the outer edges of the ribs 27, and the channels 26 receive thereinlugs 3() formed on the under face of the blade and extending inwardly from adjacent to thevends thereof. The blade, at the center .thereof is provided with a transversely eX- tending elongated slot or opening 31.
The cap or head plate forl the head proper is indicated by the numeral 32 and is designed to overlie the blade 23. The cap plate 32 is of a less width than thatof the blade and is provided, upon its edges with spaced depending lugs 33 that bear directly on theblade, so that the blade does not contact with the full surface of the cap plate. The cap plate has its ends formed with depending flanges 34 of spring material which normally exerts a pressure or tension toward each other, and each ofthe flanges has its inner face provided with `a substantially rectangular lug 35 of a width to be snugly received between the ribs 27 and in thechannels 26 of the guard 17. This holds the cap plate againstlateral movement with respect to the' 'head 15, the same being held against longitudinal movement by the frictional engagement of the fianges or sides 34 with the ends of the guard 17 The cap plate iscentrally provided with a round opening 36 and is lprovided with a series of equally spaced apertures 37 arranged concentrically around f the opening 36.
The handle 16 is preferably arranged at an angle with respect to the head 15.- The handle is constructed of two connected mem-4 bers orisections. The lower'section is indicated by the numeral 38 and has its inner end formed with a hollow head portion in .the nature of an annulus or ring, the same nular head 39 is formed with va depending" annular iange 42 designed to be received in the round opening 36 of the cap plate 32. The lower section 38 of the handle 15 has pivotally secured between suitable lugs 43 formed thereon a spring influenced dog 44, the active or toothed end of which` engaging in one of the apertures 37 of the cap plate 32. The outer face .of the section 38 lof the handle is hollow and the upperedge or surface thereofis arranged a-considerable 'distanceabove the upper edge of the'annular head 39. The hollow section is provided, at its ends and inward ofthe said ends with transverse enlargements or partitions 45,'

Received in the hollow head 39 and bearing on the inner iange 40 thereof is a round member having its outer surface provided with peri heral teeth. This gear member is indicated y -upon its under or lower face a depending annular round extension arranged off the center of thesaid gear so as to provide a cam member which is indicated by the numeral 48. The cam member or wheel 48 is adapted to pass through the opening in the cap plate-and to be received in the opening 31 of the blade 23and to contact with the end walls provided by the said opening whereby, when the gear 47 is turned the blade 23 will be reciprocated over the gear 17. The cam, as well as the gear 47 havel an openin therethrough Which is indicated by fille numeral 49.
The outer surface of the handle 16 is indicated by the numeral 50 and is of a substantiallysimilar construction to that of the lower section 38, the inner face of the said outer section .being hollow and being provided with` transverse connecting members for the sides thereof in the nature of ribs or partitions 51 that are provided with semif cylindrical depressions` 52 arranged transversely ofthe said partitions in longitudinal alinement with respect to the said handle section. The inner end of the section 50 is provided with a round depending hollow head 52 provided with an opening 54 a't its juncture with the handle proper, the said head being wider than the inner end of the handle, and this hollow head is designed to be received over the annular head 39 of the lower section and to rest upon the outer iange 41 of the said lowjer section. The head53 is designed to rest directly onthe upper edge of the annular head 39 of the lower section 38, the saidhead 53 beingprovided with a central opening 55. The handle sectionsare connected in any desired orpreferred manner, preferably through the medium of removab e elements, such as 'headed screws 56 passing through nonthreaded openings in the section 50 and engaging the threads in' alining openingsin the section .38.

Arranged for slidable movement` between the inner partitions of thehandle 16 is fa clutch member 61 having the end thereof nearest the shaft 58 provided with an annular depression or flange 62 that all times receives the end of the said shaft The clutchll is provided with asquare or rectangular linger .63 arranged inwardly and centrally of the hollow extension or flange 62, and this linger is designed to be received in the socket 6l) when the clutch member is moved longitudinally in the direction of the shortshaft. The clutch member is round in cross section and is approximately centrally provided with spaced annular flanges 64 receiving therebetween a sleeve 65 having extending therefrom a linger piece 66 on which is formed laterally extending spaced spring plates 67. The linger passes through an elongated opening in the outer section 5() of the handle 16, the outer spring plate contacting with the outer surface of the said section and closing the opening, the inner plate 67 contacting with the inner surface of the handle section. The opening, for distinction is indicated by the numeral 68, and it will be apparent that by moving the finger piece inward or outward of the handle the clutch member will be moved longitudinally to bring the linger 63 thereof in the socket 60 of the shortshaft 58, or out of the said socket. The outer end of the clutch member 61 is centrally provided with a square or rectangular socket 69 receiving a square or rectangular finger 70 formed on the end of a short shaft 71 that finds a bearing in the registering semi-cylindrical depressions in the outer transverse members or partitions formed on the sections of the handle 16. rlhe short shaft 71 is held against longitudinal movement by flanges or collars 72 formed thereon and contacting with the referred to partitions.' 'The outerend of the short shaft 71 passes through an exteriorly threaded bushing 73 formed on the outer end of the handle 16, and the said'end of the short shaft is provided with a square or rectangular socket 74C. lThis socket is adapted to be engaged by a pin 75 formed or secured to the inner end of a flexible shaft '76, the casing 77 for the shaft having its end provided with an interiorly threaded revoluble connecting socket 78 designed to threadedly engage with the bushing 73 whereby to connect the flexible shaft 76 with the short shaft 71. The flexible shaft is designed to be hitched or connected to' any desirable source of power (not shown).
The guard 17, upon its outer bulged surface is centrally reamed or otherwise provided with a depression 79 that surrounds the opening 29, the said depression receiving the head 80`of a pivot screw 81, the shank of the screw passing through the opening 29 in the guard, the opening 49 in the gear 47 and cam therefor, and passing through the opening 55 in the head 53, and the threaded end of the said Apivot screw or bolt being engaged by a nut 82 that contacts with the head 53 of the handle section 50, and by this means the handle is connected with the head. Preferably the pivot screw or bolt 81 has also arranged thereon a locking nut 83, preferably in the nature of a winged member which binding against the nut 82 holds the same against turning.
It is believed, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, that the advantages of the construction will be fully appare'nt. lt will be seen that the head may be arranged at any desired angle with respect to the handle; that the out-bulged surface of the guard permits of the proper tilting of the head 15 to clip hair at a desired angle; that the double toothed blade permits of hair being clipped from either side of the device; that the head 15 may, by the operation of the dog il be swung angularly and retained at such angles with respect to the handle, that the clutch means permits of the continuous turning of the flexible shaft when the device is in or out of operation, the peculiar straight formation of the ends of the teeth 19 permits of the guard to rest on the scalp or neck of the person operated on to sever or clip the hair a predetermined length, or in other words the hair will not be cut close to the scalp, and still further that the peculiar outer contour of the guard 17 permits of the same readily adapting itself to the scalp or neck of the person operated on and the tilting of the head of the device either laterally or longitudinally.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed as new, is
1.111 a hair clipping device, a guard which is of a greater thickness at its longitudinal center than at any other part thereof and which has the outer surface at its center rounded and inclined upwardly to the edges thereof, one of such edges being cut to provide a straight surface, and both of the edges being formed with laterally extending teeth, a blade having its opposite edges provided with teeth resting on the guard and reciprocatory thereover, and means for imparting such motion to the blade, a cap plate overlying the blade, and
interengaging means between the ends of' the cap plate and the ends of the guard.
2. In a hair clipping device,'a guard having its outer face bulged to the center thereof and having its edges provided with laterally arranged teeth, a reciprocatory blade having its opposite edges toothed on the inner face of the guard, and means for imparting a reciprocatory movement' to the blade, a cap plate arranged over the blade and having spaced lugs which contact with the blade, and spring flanges on the ends of the cap plate having elementspthereon engaging with and sustaining the cap plate` on the guard.
