CLARENCE A. BODDIE, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTING- HOUSE ELEGTRIC AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION SYLVANIA.
or runn- ELECTRICAL REGULATOL.
Application filed March 28, 1917.
1' n all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. Bonnie, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of- Alle- :in is a specification.
yinvention relates to electrical regulators of the kind in which the regulation a'gshunt circuit to a resistor in the field circuit of the exciter for a dynamo-electric machine.
The object of -my invention is to provide means for rendering a regulator of the kind specified inefiective to sustain the voltage of an electrical circuit when the voltage of the exciter exceeds a predetermined value or for otherwise adjusting the operation of the regulator in accordance with an electrical condition of the exciter.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 of which is a diagrammatic view of a system of distribution embodying the same, and Fig. 2 diagrammatically illustrates a modification of a portion of the system.
A system in connection with which the present invention may be conveniently em ployed comprises a main generator having an armature 1 that is connected to a suitable distributing circuit 234 and a fieldmagnet winding 5 that is supplied with exciting current from an exciter 6. The exciter is provided with a field magnet winding 7 that is preferably shunt-excited, though it may be supplied with current from any other suitable source, and, in series with the field-magnet winding, is a resistor 8 that is adapted to be shunted b means of cooperating stationary and mova le contact terminals 9 and 10 of a relay 11 constituting a part of the regulator.
The regulator comprises also a stationary contact terminal 12 that is resiliently mounted by being supported upon the end of a plate spring 13, and a cooperating movable contact terminal 14 that is mounted at one end of an upwardly and laterally extending arm 15 of a lever 16. The lever 16 is pivotally supported or fulcrumed upon the lower 7 end of the vertical arm of a bell-crank lever 17 and is actuated by an electromagnet 18 Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 157,930.
having a winding that is energized in proportion to an electrical condition of the circuit 234, as, for instance, by being supplied from the secondary winding of a transformer 19 the primary winding of which is connected to main circuit conductors 3 and 4. The winding 18 may be energized in accordance with, or in proportion to, any suitable electrical condition of the circuit 234 or of the generator 1--5, in a manner which is well understood by those skilled in the art. The core of the electromagnet 18 is pivotally connected to the lever 16 and is partially counterbalanced by an adjustable counterweight 20, the adjustment being such that the winding of the electromagnet 18 serves, when sufficiently energized, to raise its core. The movements of the core and of the lever 16 are preferably retarded, as, for instance, by means of a dash pot 21.
. The lever 17 is so actuated, as to move the contact terminal 14 substantially horizontally into and out of engagement with the stationary contact terminal 12 by means of an electromagnet winding, 22 having a core 23, the movements of which are preferabl retarded by means of a dash pot 24. spring 25, the tension ofwhich may be adjusted for the purpose of adjusting the operation of the regulator, is attached to the lower end of the vertical arm of the lever 17, this spring serving to assist the electromagnet winding 22 and to oppose the action of gravity to lower the core 23. The adjustment is such that, when the electroma et' winding 22 is denergized or is insu ciently energized, the core 23 falls and thereby brings the contact terminal 14 into engagement with the terminal 12. The re tardation afforded by the dash pot 24 is preferably less than that afforded by the dash pot 21 in order that approximate regulation may be effected by thewinding 22 while fine regulation is effected by the electromagnet 18. The winding 22 receives energy from the distributing circuit 234 through the transformer 19 or in any other suitable manner, andv a resistor 26 is con- 7 parallel-connected actuating windings 30 and 31, respectively, that receive energy from the exciter or any other suitable source, and the energization of which is governed by the contact terminals 12 and 14.
A relay 32, having contact terminals 33 and 34 that are normally retained in. engagement by means of a spring 35 and that are included in circuit with the contact terminals 12 and 14 and having also an energizing winding 36 that is connected to the terminals of the exciter, is employed for the purpose of rendering the regulator ineffectlve when the exciter voltage exceeds a predetermined value. When the relays 11 and 29 are of the differential type, as is customary with regulators of this kind, the relay 32 may be arranged to open the circuits of one of the coils on each relay, as shown in Fig. 2. The operation of the relays 11 and 29 may be governed in any other suitable manner by the relay 32.
Inasmuch as the structural features of the regulator and its specified mode of opera tiondo not constitute parts of the present invention, and, since the regulator operates substantially as set forth in Patent No.
necting the machine from the line.
It is intended that the invention shall include the use of a relay operating in response to any electrical condition of the exciter for the purpose of modifying the operation of the regulator or for performing other functions with respect thereto, and it is desired that the invention shall not be limited to the specific means illustrated and described for effecting the desired results.
I claim as my invention: 7 1. The combination with a dynamo-electric,.machine and an excitertherefor, of a regulator comprising a main pair of cooperatlng contact members, means for actuating the same, a relay controlled 'by the con-.
tact members, and a second relay responsive to an electrical condition of the exciter for controlling the first relay independent of'the main contact members.
2. The combination with a dynamo-electric machine and an exciter therefor, of a regulator comprising a main pair of coopcrating contact members, means for actuating the same, a relay controlled by the contact members, and means responsive to an electrical condition of the exciter for con trolling the energization of the said relay.
3. The combination with a' dynamo-electric machine and an exciter therefor, of a regulator for the field strength of the exciter comprising a plurality of actuating windings, and means for controlling the circuit of certain of said windings in' accordance with the voltage of the exciter.
4. The combination with a supply circuit, a dynamo-electric machine connected to the supply circuit, and an exciter therefor, of a regulator for the field strength of the exciter comprising a plurality 'of actuating windings, and a relay for controlling the circuit of certainof said windings during certain electrical conditions of the exciter circuit without disturbing the supply circuit.
5. The combination with a dynamo-elecctric machine and an exciter therefor, of a regulator for the field strength of the exciter comprising a; plurality of actuating windings, and means in addition to the regulator for modifying the operation of the regulator when the exciter voltage exceeds a predetermined value.
' 6. The combination with a dynamo-electric machine and an exciter therefor, of a regulator of the vibratory type for the field strength of the exciter and means intermittently operated under certain conditions for modifying the operation of the regulator when the exciter voltage exceeds a predetermined value. 7 In testimony whereof I have hereunto subsrcribed my name this 22d day of March, 191
