ALICE BURCHELL, 0F MAYFIE'LD, ENGLAND.
cHILDs COMBINATION-oom ADAPTABLE As PLAY-PENae.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALICE BURCHELL, a of Great Britain and Ireland', and a resident of Mayfield, county of ISussex, England, have. inventeda certain new and useful Improvementin Childrens -Uombination-Cots Adaptable as Play-Pens, o-r as Means to Facilitate `Walking, or for other Furposes, of which the following is' a specification.
The invention provides a childs combination cot, adaptable as a play pen, or .as means to facilitate the child walking, or as a seat and table receptacle, or as a cradle, i
or as some or all of these.
An important feature of the invention consists in providing in the cot a bed capable of being wholly Aor partly withdrawn from its normal position so that it uncovers the whole or part of the floor area Jformerly covered by it.
To facilitate a child learning to walk, l provide within the cot framing a handle aror its equivalent, conveniently removable and adjustable in position, where-by,
when the bed is withdrawn, the handle bar and cot lframing serve to steady the child and prevent it from falling.
A removable seat andhinged table may also be included as accessories to the cot.
Further features of the invention are the devices for preventing the cot from lurching backward when the child is trying to. walk, and for applying a resistance to the cots motion suitable for the childs strength. These devices may include casters provided with ratchet gear and adjust-able brakes.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of adjustable rockers, whereby the cot may serve as a cradle.
rlheY accompanying drawings illustrate, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention. In these drawings Figure l is a'plan view of the cot.
Figs. 2 and 3 are side and endv views respectively, showing more clearly the means for mounting the collapsible bed, adjustable l handle bar, table and rockers.
Figs. 4 and 5 show the ratchet gear for the casters; and, j j
Figs. 6 and 7 the .brake device for the l Same.
Referring to the drawings, the seat l is provided at one end of the cot, this seat bel ing provided with legs 2 of metal'to engage Specification of Letters Patent.4
Patented sepaae, 1920.
Application led March 30, 1920. Serial No. 369,989.
over the lower bar 3 of the cot framing. At the sides and rear ofthe seat, padded boards 4, 4, 4 are provided, these being removable by means of turnbuckles 5 which engage the adjacent rails of the framing. When the padded boards are removed, the seat l may be removed from the cot by raising the legs 2 from the bars on which they rest and are steadied by the depending lugs 2.
l may, if desired, mount a seat externally on the framing. Below the seat is mounted the roller bed 6, this being ci mackintosh cloth, for example, and being spring-controlled somewhat in the manner of a roller blind.
As seen in Figs. l and 2, the bed, when eX- tended, conveniently passes up behind the seat and forms a horizontal bed secured by lhooks 7.
From the above, one feature of the/invention lis made clear. rEhe rolled bed, with or without the seat, may be withdrawn so that it uncovers the area below the cot. The
latter may thus serve as a play pen or safe l1 may tighten bolts l2 passing through the slots in the arms andthrough the plates.
The cot may be provided withmeans for facilitating its motion when the handle bar 8 is in use, I may use casters and may provide a ratchet and a brake device 6, 7) if desired. The ratchet gear prevents backward movement of the cot, and the brake device gives the cot a resistance to motion suitable for the childs strength.
Instead of casters I might provide other devices (so-called domes of silence, for example) and non-return and braking devices engaging the door.
A hinged table 13, 13 may also be provided at a convenient height for a child sitting on the seat 1 The two halves of the table may overlap as shown in Fig. 3,
8 (Figs. 4- 7) gear Figs. 4, 5)
but normali are turned up, as shown in dotted lines 1n this igure, and are held from falling down by any suitable device (e. g. elastic bands around each flap and the adjacent cot rails).
Referring nowito the details of the caster mountings, it will be seen from Figs. 4 5 that the lratchet 14 engages the teeth -15 in the wheel as soon as the eccentrically mounted lever -16 is turned upwardly. The helical spring 17 then raises rod 18 and the ratchet 14 is free to fall by gravity. The reverse movement of lever 16 freies the ratchet by swinging it about its pivot 17.
The brake gear shown in Figs. 6, 7 comprises a rod 18, on a bottom flange of which is a rubber pad 19. lThe spring 20 tends to keep the brake oil the wheel, but turning of the knob 21 causes its stem 22 to take various positions on the cam surface 23 and the brake rod 18 is thus caused to approach or recede from the caster wheel whereby the pressure thereon may be regulated.
Another adjustment I may make to the cot is raising its walls by means of an auxiliary framing mounted above the existing framing. This provides convenient heights of rail for children of various ages.
Finally, the cot may be utilized as a cradle by providing it with hinged rockers 19 (Figs. 1, 2) which take the whole weight of the cot when they are turned down, yand when turned up may be held secure from falling by any suitable device, such as elastic bands.
A device of the class described including in combination, 'an inclosure frame, .a removable bottom therefor, a seat adapted to be supported on the side rails of said inclosure frame and at one end thereof, cushions detachablycarried bythe side walls of the inclosure frame adjacent the seat position, and a table located adjacent the seat position and consisting of swinging leaves hinged to the opposite side walls of .the inclosure frame.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 13th day of March,
