FIRE-EXTINGIQ'ISIIING APPARATUS.
a iioatioiiifiiea March a.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, KosraaEiuiL ALI- TALO. auditor, subject of Finland, residing at ilbo, Finland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. r j;
The present invention relates to chemical fire extinguishing apparatus in which water is forced out by gas pressure in the form of a jet through the nozzle-piece of a closed vessel.
In apparatus of this kind the requisite pressure is usually produced by means of carbonate of soda dissolved in water and by sulfuric acid contained in a separate receptacle, which acid is caused to mix with the solution when the apparatus is being used, the carbonic acid thereby developed expelling the solution through the nozzle.
The present invention relates to an improvement of fire extinguishing apparatus of this kind and has for its object to produce a rapid and complete mixture of the sulfuric acid with the solution of soda, so that the apparatus may be brought in full operation in the shortest possible period of time. It has previously been suggested to this end to inclose the sulfuric acid in a glass receptacle which is crushed by means of a push rod when the apparatus is to be put in operation. This arrangement, however, has the disadvantage that a new acid receptacle must be procured and inserted after each operation of the apparatus which may cause great trouble in using the apparatus in remote places where it may be difficult to procure new receptacles. According to the present invention a rapid and complete-mixing of the sulfuric acid and the soda solution is obtained without the acid receptacle being damaged, by said receptacle being provided with openings at opposite ends of the receptacle, which openings are normally closed by plugs or the like adapted to be operated by means of a suitable push rod, so that the receptacle is opened at both ends simultaneously thereby facilitating a rapid mixing of the acid with the soda solution surrounding the receptacle on all sides.
The invention is represented on the accompanying drawing in which Figures 1 and 2 show two different forms of an acid receptacle and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section pecification of Letters Patent. P t t t 23; 1 297;
iaia, 5m no. 1,493.
through a fire extinguishing apparatus showing the arrangement of the acid receptacle inthc apparatus. 7 I r V In the embodiment shownin Fig. l the cylindrical acid receptacle is provided at t e opposite ends with openings in which air tight cylhidrical; plugs 2 made of glass or some other material withstanding the influence of the acid are disposed, the said plugs 2 being provided with a packing ring 3. which may consist of a plastic material such as fat.
These plugs are secured to a rod 4 by means o which the plugs may be displaced relative to the receptacle, when the apparatus is to be put into operation, so that the acid contained in the receptacle is brought in contact with the surrounding soda solution at both ends of the receptacle.
One opening of the acid receptacle is provided with a flange 5 to which a clamp 7 consisting of two parts is attached by means of a ring 6.
Secured to the upper tubular end 8 of the said clamp is a push rod 9 which is fixed by means of a cross pin 10. The two parts of the clamp are kept together by means of a ring 11 arranged on the tubular part 8. The dividing of the clamp has for its purpose to facilitate the filling of the acid receptacle.
In the example illustrated in Fig. 2 the opening or months of the acid receptacle and the edges of the plugs fitted therein are elongated and provided with circular grooves 12, the corresponding extension of the other part being fitted therein. By th1s arrangement the advantage is obtained that the contact surfaces between the plugs and the edges of the openings of the receptacle are rendered as large as possible, whereby the packing becomes more secure.
In Fig. 3 an acid receptacle provided with a closing device according to the invention is shown by way of example as applied to a fire extinguishing apparatus, the nozzle 13 of which is in known manner introducible into the vessel and continued by a pipe 14 extending nearly to the bottom of the metal vessel 15. The push rod 9 is connected to said pipe 16, whereas the rod 4 bears against the bottom of the vessel 15. The opening of the acid receptacle 1S effected by pushing in the nozzle 13, the vessel 1 being then displaced so that the plugs 2 wili occupy the positions indicated in Fig. 1, by means of dotted lines.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A fire extinguishing apparatus comprising a liquid container, a receptacle containing a substance reacting with the liquid in the container, said receptacle being arranged inside the container near the bottom thereof and provided with openings located one at each end of the receptacie, plugs connected with one another and arranged to close the openings in the receptacle, and a push rod connected with the receptacle and extending outside the container and adapted, on being operated, to open said receptacle at both ends simultaneously.
2. A fire extinguishing apparatus comprising a liquid container, a receptacle containing a substance reacting With the liquid in the container, said receptacle being arranged inside the container near the bottom thereof and provided with openings located one at each end of the receptacle, plugs for closing the openings and a slidable nozzle connected With said receptacle and adapted, on being pushed in, to open the receptacle at both'ends simultaneously.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
