To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS C. VnR'rU I, citizen of the United States, residlng at the village of Winooski, in the town of Colchester, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combinations, construction Y and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and
more particularly pointed out in 'the appended claims.

On one side of the casing is a lug 4 having an aperture 5, in which aperture 5 may be placed a retaining .chain, for fastening the lock to a suitable support, whereby it will not be displaced or lost. In the inner face of the casing 1 are elongated pockets 6 that register with dogs 7 carried by the sliding shackle 8. The shackle 8 is provided with a hook 9 at its outer end, and is provided with a cut-out portion 10 on one side, producing a shoulder, at 11', that strikes against the inner end 13 of the lug 14' formed in the casing 1, for preventing the shackle from being entirely removed from the casing. A bent or angle spring 15, se= cured in any suitable manner to the casing 1, as at 16, presses against the lower end 0 the shackle for normally forcing the shackle outward. Thespring is cut-away, as at 17, Fig. 4, to allow the spring to pass the inner end of the knob devices, asthe shackle moves outwardly when the dogs are released from the-knob devices.
Each dog 7 comprises a body .18 that has,
. at its lower end, oppositely-extending arms 19, which arms 19 fit in suitable recesses 20 (Fig. 7) formed at opposite sides of the. elongated apertures 21, through which apertures the bodies 18 of the dog devices extend (Figs. 6 and 7). By the arms 19 being seated in the recesses'20, the dogs are pivotally mounted upon the shackle and are adapted to be engaged by the inner ends of the knob devices 22. The upper or outer end of the body 18 of each dog device is provided with a tooth 23 that passes through the smaller slots 24 formed on the rim 25 at the inner end of each knob device, but when the combination has been solved by the operator of the knob devices, the large slots 26 (Fig. 8) will be in parallelism or opening nearest to the open end of the with suitable letters, or other designating means, to indicate a combination that must be solved or worked before the enlarged slots 26 are in the position shown in Fig. 8 for releasing the dogs from the knob devices, and permitting the shackle to move through the action of spring 15, to its open or outer position. .To cause the dogs to extend outwardly, at their upper or outer ends, bent or angle springs 28' are provided, each spring including a comparatively long arm pressing against the back of the dog body 18, the spring being fastened at its base by having the edges of shackle recess hammered or turned down over the spring, and while the shackle is in place within the casing, the springs 28 will be retained in an accurate, operative position for holding the dogs out and in correct position to enter the rim 25 of the knob devices.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 10 and 12, I employ only one knob device 29, which i knob device is provided at its inner end with a rim 25, like the other knob devices inFigs. 1 to 9. Around the rim 25 is loosely mounted a ring 30, which ring is retained upon the rim 25 by means of a two-fingered sprin 31; this spring 31 is seated in a groove 32 Fig. 11), to keep it in place on the ring 30, and the spring acts as a brake or retarding means, preventing the ring from too readily rotating upon the rim 25. The ring 30 is provided with two shoulders 33 formed upon opposite sides of the large opening 26 of the ring, corresponding to the same large opening in the rim 25 (Fig. 10), so that when the enlarged opening 26 in both the rim 25 and the ring 30 register, the single dog device that may be carried by the shackle 9, will pass through and release the shackle. On the rim 25 is formed a bent-over portion or lug 34 which, upon rotating the knob device 29,,
will slide over a portion of the inner face of the ring 30, until the lug engages one of the shoulders 33, whereupon the ring 30 will be rotated with the knob device for causing the same to be moved to the position shown in Fig. 10, for allowing the shackle with the single dog device, like the dog devices shown in Figs. 1 to 7, to pass therethrough. It will be obvious that upon continuing the rotation of the knob device 29, after the lug 34 has engaged a shoulder, the ring 30 will be. moved to such a position as to place the large slot 26 to one side of the position shown in Fig. 10, when the knob device will have been so placed as to prevent the end of the dog body from passing out of the knob device; the same principle exactly is involved whether one knob device and dog is used in the construction of a lock, or whether several as for instance three, shown in Figs. 5 to 7,
are used; it is entirely optional to the constrlfctor which embodiment is employed under the scope of the appended claims.
It is to be understood that the elongated pockets 6, Fig. 3, are produced by scraping out enough metal, from the inner surface of the casing 1, to allow the dogs to ride over the ends of the knobs.
The auxiliary knob device comprises knob 35, having stem 36 extending into an annular casin 37' between the inner end of casin 37 and a portion of the plate 2 is positioned a coilspring 38 that presses inwardly on the casing 37 for normally holding its inner end in the aperture 39 formed in the shackle 8. The object of this auxiliary knob device is to hold the shackle in its innermost position orshut, while the combination is being set.
By pulling outward on the auxiliary knob changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I'claim is 2.
1. In a combination lock, the combination of a casingprovided with a knob device, a shackle slidably mounted in said casing, said shackle provided with a spring-pressed dog, means formed upon said knob device for receivingv and holding one end of the dog for retaining the shackle in a locked position within the casing, and a spring in the casing and pressingagainst a portion of the shackle for forcing the shackle outwardly when the knob device is operated for releasing the dog.
2. In a combination lock, the combination of a casing provided with a primary knob device, a shackle slidably mounted in said casing, said shackle provided with a dog cooperating with the knob device for locking the shackle within the casing, an auxiliary knob device upon the casing and engaging and entering a portionof the shackle, said auxiliary knob device comprising a knob having a stem, a casing mounted upon said stem, a spring interposed between a portion of the shackle and the inner end of the lastmentioned casing for holding the last-mentioned casing in engagement with the shackle, but permitting the knob to be drawn outwardly for releaslng the shackle, and means for forcing the shackle outwardly upon the casingwhen the primary knob device is operated for releasing the dog.
3. In a combination lock, the combination of a casing, said casing provided with an elongated pocket cut out of its inner face, a shackle in said casing, a dog pivotally mounted on the shackle and registering with the elongated pocket, a plate on said casing,

small slots, a dog plvotally mounted on said shackle and having a body terminating at its upper or outer end in a tooth, and said tooth adapted to pass through the small slots of the rim and the body of the dog adapted to pass through the large slot of the rim, whereby when the extended or outer end of the dog is within the rim of the knob device, the shackle will be locked or retained within the casing.
6. In a combination lock, the combination of a casing, a slidable shackle within said casing, a plate on said casing, a knob device on said plate, said shackle provided with a pivoted dog, and a bent or angular spring having its base seated in the shackle and having an extended end pressing against a portion of the dog for holding the dog normally in an extended position at one side of the shackle for engaging said knob device whereby the knob device may retain the shackle in its innermost or locked position within the casing.
7. In a combinationdock, the combination of a casing, a slidable shackle in said casing, said casing provided with a rotatable knob device, a dog provided with a body and with oppositely extending arms'pivotally mounted upon the shackle and adapted to extend through-the same, a spring bearing against the back of the dog and having its base seated in the shackle, and said dog adapted to engage and enter a portion of the knob device for normally holding the shackle in a closed position within the casing. s,

In a combination lock, the combination with a casing, of a shackle slidably mounted in said casing, a plate on said casing, a knob device rotatably mounted on said plate, said knob device including a rim at its inner end, said rim having a large slot and a plurality of smaller slots, aring rotatably mounted uponsaid rim, said ring provided with a large slot adapted to register with the large slot of the rim, said ring provided with shoulders at opposite sides of its large slot, said rim provided with a bent-over portion or lug adapted to engage either of the shoulders of the ring for rotating the ring, a
spring carried by' the plate andengaging the outer surface of the ring for retarding its rotary movement and also holding the ring upon the rim, and means on the shackle for cotiperating with the rim and ring for retainin the shackle in.a locked position within t e casing. v
10.
