Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE0 BERNARD CONNELLY, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVlCES FOR FEEDING STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,265, dated January 28, 1873.
Y ai rc, Fig. l.
Similar letters ot reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved coal-scuttle, or device for feeding stoves with coal, which shall be so constructed that the coal may be introduced into the stove in such a way as to prevent the escape of gas stationary and inclined and the other hinged;
and the chain, said parts being constructed and operating in connection with each other as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the body of the scuttle, the upper part of which is made in the form of an inverted frustum of a cone, and its lower part is made in the form of a cylinder and of such a size as to enter the hole in the top of the stove. The cylindrical part of the body A is provided with an outwardly-projecting iange, a, to rest upon the top of the stove and support the scuttle. B is the cover of the scuttle, which is made in two unequal parts. The smaller part is made fast to the upper edge of the body A, and to its edge is hinged the edge of the larger part. The hinged part of the cover B is provided with a handle for convenience in raising it. C is the bottom of the scuttle, which is made in two parts, which may be equal, or nearly equal, in size. One
part of the bottom O is stationary, is placed in an inclined position, and its edge is secured to the body A. To the lower edge of the stationary part of the bottom O is hinged the edge of the other part in such a way that the said hinged part may be swung above and bclow a horizontal position. To the hinged part ofthe bottom C, near its outer or free edge, is secured the end or" a chain, D, which passes up through a hole in the stationary part of the cover B, and has a cross-bar or other stop at-l tached to its free end to keep it from being accidentally drawn through. The hinged part of the bottom C is supported in a horizontal position by passing a pin through a link of the chain D above the stationary part of the cover B.
In feeding the stove the cover is removed from the hole in the top ofthe stove, and the cylindrical part of the scuttle is inserted in said hole. The locking-pin is then withdrawn from the chain D, which allows the hinged part of the bottom O to drop into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. I, discharging the coal into the stove.
The scuttle is especially designed for use with reservoir or self-feeding stoves; but it may be used with any stove having a hole in its top over the fire-chamber.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved coal-scuttle, formed of the body A made conical in its upper part, cylindrical in its lower part, and provided withan outwardly-projecting iiange, a; the cover B made in two parts, one stationary and the other hinged; the bottom C made in two parts, one stationary and inclined and the other hinged; and the chain D, said parts being constructed and operating in connection with each other substantially as herein shown and described.
BERNARD GONNELLY.
