BANJO.
Application filed June 8, 1920.
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Muenster, in the county of Cooke and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Banjos, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a banjo or like musical instrument, wherein the packing or storing of the same in a small space, thus facilitating the shipment 01" same and uarding against the risk of distortion of the neck or finger board in transit, on account of the length of said neck or finger board, and with this object in View, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts, wherein Figure 1, is a front view of a musical instrument of the banjo type constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fi 2, is a detail longitudinal sectional View taken from one of the joints of the neck or finger board.
The invention consists essentially in providing the instrument with a neck or finger board Consisting of a plurality of detachable terminally abutting sections or members 10 desirednumber may be employed to aiiord the necessary length o1 the completed article of the preferred dimensions of the sections or members to facilitate the packing or storing, the adjoining edges or said sections or members being provided with means of attachment which, while facilitating the dis-engagement thereof serve to maintain the parts in their proper relative positions when the instrument is set up for use and is subjected to the strain of the strings. In the preferred embodiment of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1920. Serial No. 387,308.
the invention, the means of attachment consist of coupling pins which have a body portion 11, which may be of cross sectionally angular or irregular form seated in a socket 12 in one of the extremities of a section or member of the neck or finger board, and a stem 13 which is disposed to project beyond the said extremity for engagement with a socket la in the end of the adjoining section or member, said pin being threaded to permit of an adjustment of the sections or members when united. Obviously when the sections or members are dis-engaged they may be arranged in parallelism and within a small space represented by little more than the diameter of the head 15 of the instrument so that the latter may be housed within a box or casing, which, for example, may be only about one third the length of the rdinary banjo box.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is A musical instrument of the banjo type having a neck or finger board consisting of separable sections and means for detachably connecting the adjoining ends thereof, said means consisting of a pin having a cross sectionally irregular body portion seated in the extremity of one section and provided with a threaded pin for engagement with the socket in the adjacent extremity ol the adjoining section.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
lll NORMAN BROWN.
