Specification of Letters Patent.

. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAYNOR D. BROOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Toy Vehicles; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part; of this specification. v
This invention relates to vehicles adapted to be operated by juveniles and one of the objects thereof is to provide a vehicle which the child may readily manipulate and which is adapted to be propelled by pedaling against the surface over which the vehicle travels and which is adapted to be used as a coaster and which is adapted to be drawn if desired by a second party through the medium of a cord or rope which will direct the car without aid from the operator of the car if so desired.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the car that the seat support or beam which constitutes the reach may be vertically adjustable so that one car may be adjusted to a plurality of sizes, thus obviating the necessity for keeping a large assortment of sizes in stock.
Another advantage is that the car may be adjusted from time to time to fit the growing child.
t is also the purpose of the invention to furnish a seat provided with a support confined within narrow limits so that the feet and lower parts of the legs of the operator may assume substantially a vertical position and not necessarily a sidewise position and so that the knees of the operator may remain near together instead of being forced apart as is common with some of the devices that are in use which have an arrangement in which the width of the seat support is parallel with the surface of the earth instead of perpendicular as in this device, one of the aims of the inventions being to prevent friction on the private parts of the young operator.

Referring now to the drawings by nu- 1 designates a reach or seat support member having a cut-out portion 2 in front of the seat 3 provided with a back 4:. The reach 1 is hinged to a forward extension 5 by the hinged member 6.. The members 1 and 5-are pivoted as at 7 and 8 so that the forward extension will be swung to either right or left in guiding the vehicle. 9 is a steering post secured in an inclined recess 10 by some simple fastening means as 11. 12 designates a projection designated to simulate the filling cap for the radiator of a motor vehicle and to this projection may be attached a cord or similar device for propelling the car by a second party. 13 and 14; designate axle blocks, arranged at the front and rear of the vehicle respectively and as each. axle block is substantially a duplicate of the other, I will describe only one of them. The axle block 13 is provided. with a cut-out portion 15 to receive the lower edge of the forward extension 5, said forward extension having an elongated vertical recess 16 adapted to receive a pin or post 17 carried by the axle block and secured thereto by the transverse fastening device 18, the pin or post 17 being provided with a plurality of transverse openings 19 adapted to register with the opening 20 passing through the forward extension. The forward extension can be raised or lowered by combining any of the openings 19 with the opening 20 and passing the fastening device 21 thereto to secure the parts together. If further adjustment is desired, the front axle 22 may be raised or lowered through the medium of an of the through openings 23 extending from end to end through the axle block 13. The axle 22 carries wheels 24 and 25 which may be secured thereto in any suitable manner.
The wheels 24 and 25 are carried by the axle 26 on the rear block, 14, the construction of the rear block being substantially the same as that of block 13 and the adjustment for the rear portion of the vehicle is made in substantially the same manner as is the adjustment for the front portion. If desired, foot-rest projections 27 may be attached to the member 1.
It will be obvious that the vehicle constructed in accordance with my invention will be easily manipulated and when occasion may demand it may be easily adjusted to seat the particular size required.
I claim- 1. A toy vehicle comprising a beam, a forward extension on said beam, wheel carrying axles, axle blocks for the beam and its extension, said axle blocks being provided with a plurality of axle receiving openings whereby the axles may be adjusted vertically with respect to said blocks, upstanding pins connected to said blocks and received in sockets in the forward extension and the rear portion of the beam respectively, said, pins having a plurality of openings and fastening devices adapted to pass through any of the openings to secure the pins to the forward extension and rear portion of the beam.
2. A toy vehicle comprising a beam, axle blocks having cutaway portions to receive the beam, upstanding pins on the axle blocks extending into vertical recesses in the beam, said pins having a plurality of transverse openings, and fastening devices adapted to pass through any of the openings to secure the pins rigid with the beam.
3. A vehicle comprising a beam, a transverse axle block having a cutaway portion, centrally thereof, to receive the beam, a rigid upstanding pin projecting from the floor of the cutaway portion into a vertical recess in the beam, and means for effecting adjustment between the pin in the recess and the beam.
