WINDOW-SHADE.
Application filed June 21,
To all LU/wm, t may concern Y Be it lrnown that I, THOMAS J. BURNS, a citizen of vthe United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Gnondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Shades, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to window shades or screens.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel form of guide, which may be used in connection with either a window shade or a window screen and which is carried upon the window to guide and hold the shade or vscreen in its adjusted position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is neat and attractive in appearance, inexpensive to manufacture, and which may be'easily and quickly applied.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a car window, with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. f
Fig. 3 is an'enlarged section through one end of one of the curtainrods and guide.
Fig. t is a similar view of one of the wear plates.
Fig. 5 is a detail section showing the spring actuated latch.
Fig. 6 is a detail section showing the spring actuated latch.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is illustrated a car window, which is designated by the reference character 10.
Mounted in suitable brackets 11, secured in position at the upper end of the window. is a spring actuated shade roller 12, the latter carrying a shade 13 of suitable size and fabric. Secured to the lower end of the shade 13, is a frame 14, which Vcomprises transversely extending rods 16 and connecting bars 17. The rods 16 are preferably of tubular telescopic formation, so as to adapt them to windows of different widths. `Each end of these rods is flattened, asL indicated at 1S, the flattened portions being slightly offset andhaving their extremities formed with eyes 19. y
A' tubular guide 20 is secured to the inner face of each side of the window by.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. f7,l 19.20.

considerably largerdiainet'er than the widthy of the slots 22 so that they not only guide the shade lor curtain, but prevent its Inarginal edgesfrom coming out of the tubular guide members. The eyes 19 of the rod 16 vreceive the guide rods 23, so that the shade i is guided and held within the tubular guides 2O when it is raised or lowered? The .lower rod 16 of the frameis provided at each end with a wear plate or strip 25, which surrounds the edge of the curtain and prevents wear upon the latter from contact with the edges of the slot 22 in the tubular guide 20.
The upper rod 16 of the frame is provided at each end with a spring actuated latch 26, which operates within the rod. One end of the latch extends through the end of the rod for engagement with spaced notches provided vin the tubular guide 20, while theV opposite end of the latch carries an operating handle 27, which extends through a slot in the rod 16. By this means the curtain may be held in adjusted position, while the formation of the frame insures a smooth working of thev rods 16` upon the guide rods 21, byv preventing the eyes 19 from binding.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. The combination with av spring actuated window shade having side hems and a transverse hem, of a longitudinally slotted guide secured toeach sideof theA window casing, vertical rods positioned within said guides for insertion within the sidehems, a rod positioned in the transverse hem and having each end engaged with the vertical rod and means extending over the side hems of the shade and around the vertical rods to space the curtain hems from the tubular guides. Y Y l 2. The combination with a spring actuated window shade having side hems and a transverse hein, of a longitudinally slotted guide secured to each side ofthe window casing, vertical rods positioned Within said guldes for insertion Within the side hems, a rod positioned in the transverse hem and having each 4end engaged with the vertical rods and Wear platesV extending over the sidehems of the shade and around the vertical rods to space the herns from the tubular guides.
3.V The combination with a spring actuated Window shade having side hems and a transverse hem, of a longitudinally slotted 4guide secured to each side of the Window casing, vertical rods positioned Within said guides forinsertion Within the side hems, a iframe comprising spaced transversely disposed rods and end connecting rods located within the transverse hem7 eyes located at each end of the frame for engagement around the vertical rods and means extending over the side 'fhems o the shade and around the vertical rods to space'the henis` Vfrom the tubular guides.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.r
