To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM A. SMITH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have in ented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valves,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates'to valves and in par- ./--ticular to a valve for air compressors which is readily adapted with but slight modifications for either a discharge or inlet valve. The objects of the present invention are to produce a valve for air compressors which will be simple, eiiicient and compact, which may be made either with a single opening or port or a plurality of openings and which may be made up eitheras a discharge or inlet valve and also, one in which the moving or valveqelement is made up. of. a flat strip of springgsteel bent into the-form of an :open

Figure 1 shows a cross sectional view through the valve and compressor cylinder pressor at 2 is one of the valves 3 made in accordance with the present invention. The ring 6 is retained in place by means of lugs 7 outstanding from the seat 4 and ,prevented from ,rotati'ng by means of a pin 8 set 1nto the seat and interposed between the ve'ring 6 as shown in Fig. 2; It w ll be seen that an annular passage, shown at 2, is provided in which the valve ring 6 moves, this passage limiting the expansive, contractile and lateral movement of the valve ring.
The valve ring 6 is of springsteel bent into the form of a ring which will normally fit tightly against the seat 4 and around the passages 5 so that the passages 5 will be effectively closed when there is any greater pressure on the outside of the valve ring 6 than on the inside. The valve ring 6' is, however, free to open when this pressuredifierence is reversed and admit or discharge fluid to or from the cylinder according to the manner in which the valve is made up. This pressure difference to open the valve is very slight and is provided by the rush of fluid through the valve.
The valve shown in Fig. l is'a discharge fluid compressed to valve permitting the pass throughthe valve .by means of the passages5'tothe discharge passage 9.
In Fig. 8 is shown the valve adapted as an-inlet valve, the passages 10 extending throughthis form of the valve being con nected to the inlet passage 11 and extending to the valve ring '12, which is in every way similar to the ring 6 in Fig. 1. p
In Fig. 5 is shown a valve made in accordance with the present invention in which'a plurality of rings and valve seats are utilized to increase the port areas. The
valve shown in this figure is of the dischargetype but it is obvious that this multiple form may be made up equally Well as an inlet valve with the same advantage of increased areas of fluid passages.
The valves as shown in each modification are conveniently walls of the cyli' plate 13 through'which passes a screw 14 engaging and pressing into place the valve '3.
It is to be understood that while the pres ent showing anddescription disclose only made up of a fiat strip retained in place in the nder by means of a cover certain specific embodiments of the present invention, other forms and modifications are included within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims. v
What I claim is:
1. In a valve for compressors, a valve body seated in acompressor wall, an annular se"t on said valve body having a plurality of independent ports extending therethrough to a lateral face thereof, a resilient ring surrounding said seat and covering said ports, said ring being/adapted to expand away from said seat to open said valve and means providing arr annular passage for limiting the expansive movement of the valve.

pendent ports extending therethrough to a lateral face thereof, a resilientvalve ring surrounding said seat and covering said ports, said'ring adapted to expand and contract in openin and closing of said valve, said ring abutting against the compressor wall, and lugs on the periphery of said valve body, whereby an annular passage is provided limiting the expansion, contraction and lateral movement of the valve.
3. In a valve for compressors, a valve body seated in a compressor wall, an annular seat on 'saidval've body. having ports extending therethrough to a lateral face thereof, said ports being arranged in annular formation around a solid central por-- .tion of said valve body, a resilient fiat valve ring surrounding said seat and covering said ports, said ring adapted to expand and contract in opening and closing of said valve, and means providing a passage for limiting the expansion, contraction and lateral movement of the valve. In a compressor, a valve seatformed in a wall of the compressor, an annular surface provided insaid Wall, an annular valve body positioned on said annular surface, means for securing said valve body in fluidtight relationship with respect tothe com- I pressor cylinder, a plurality of ports on the annular edge of said valve body, a plurality of ports on a lateral surface of said-valve body, passages in said valve body connecting the ports on the annular valve body surface with the ports on the lateralsurfaceof said valve body, an open annular spring member forming a valve surrounding the annular surface of said valve body and adapted to expand and contract to uncover and cover the ports on said annular surface, and a plurality of lugs outstanding from the periphery of said valnebody for limiting, axial movement of fsaidvalve spring onits seat on the annular valve body sur ce,

In a compressor, a valve seat formed in a Wall of-the compressor, an annular surface r provided in said wall, an annular valvebotly positioned on. said annular surface, a cover plate secured in said compressor wall above said valve body, means in said cover plate for securing said valve bodyin' fluid-tight I .body, each of said 10 relationship With respect to the compressor cylinder, a plurality of ports on the annular edge of said valve body, a plurality of ports on a lateral surface of said valve body, said latter ports being arranged in annular formation circumferentially of a solid central portion of said valve body, a plurality of independent passages in said valve passages connecting one of the ports on the annular valve body surface with a port on the lateral surface of said valve body, one of said sets of independent ports opening directly into the cylinder of the compressor and the other to the discharge passage therefrom, an open annular spring'member forming a valve surrounding the annular surface of said valve body and adapted to expand and contract to uncover and cover the ports on said annular surface said valve spring abutting against the annular surface in the compressoravall forming the seat for the valve body, and a plurality of lugs outstanding from the periphery of said valve body for limiting axial movement of said valve spring on its seat on the annular valve body surface and forming anannular passage for limiting the expansion, contraction and lateral movement of the valve spring.
