' JOHN o. PIERCE, oFnEw YORK, N. Y.
CARPET-IBEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Alt 1920.
Application filed August 22,1918, Serial No. 250,934. Renewed January 28, 19 20. SeriaLNo. 354,752.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Joan OrPIE-RGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Beaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specifi cation.
This invention relates to carpet heaters,
and has for its object to provide an improved device of this kind which may be built up from a small beater, suitablefor use with one hand, to a large beater capable of covering considerable more surfaceand adapted to be actuated by both hands. The building up process 'is accomplished by securing additional-bows to the frame .of the small initial beater until the desired size is reached. The invention will be first hereinafter dee scribed in connection with the accompany ing drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description. In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure -1 is a plan view ofa carpet beater constructed in accordance withthisinvention and having two additional bows secured thereto.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the heater, and Fig. 3 is a detailed section through one side of the frame of the beater showing how the additional bows are fastened thereto.
The basic or foundation beatercomprises a handle 1, transverse frame members 2 and 3, and a plurality of bows4 which are passed through said frame members and extend be yond them to form the beater proper. The frame member 2 is arranged transversely at the end of the handle 1, and the other trans verse .member 3 is spaced therefrom by a block 5, the two transverse members and'the spacing block being secured to the handle by means of the strap 6 which is bent upon itself so as to extend across the middle of the transverse member 3 and down along'the sides of the spacing block 5, across the member 2 and along the front and rear faces of the handle to which it is secured by the rivets 7 or the like. i M V v i To increasexthesize of the beater, iaddi tional bows 8, of any suitable number, are
securedto the transverse members 2 andfB extension strips 9 fastened to the ends of the member Q-and other extension strips 10 fastened to the ends of the member 3. The strips 9 are slotted at 11, and the stripslO at in line with the other bows lby means of a 12 to embrace the bows 1 and said strips are secured to the'transverse members by bolts. 13 passed through both members and strips.
The nuts 14 on the ends of said'bolts also retain hinged leaves 15011; the strips 9 with their abutments 16 in engagement with the bent ends 17 of the bows 8,'and hinged leaves 18, at opposite'sides of the handle, in contact with thebent ends19of the bows t, whereby said bows 4 and. 8 are held in proper are hinged'to the sidesof the handle just verse member 2 into engagement with the bent ends of theadditional bows 8. When the additiona'l'bows are not used, the bolts 13,may be employedfor holding the leaves :18 in'engagement with the bent ends of the .main bows 4,, and the strips 9 and 10 maybe.
taken off or left on, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of thevUnited States is 1. The combination with a basic'carpet beater, of additional bows, and means for detachably fastening said bows to the basic beater in line with its bows to increase the size of said beater.
2. The combination with a basic carpet beater having a handle, transverse members and bows attached to said members, of additional' bows for increasing the size of said basic beater, and means for fastening said addltional bows to said transverse members in line with the main bows.
' 3. The combination with a basic carpet beater having a handle, transverse members and bows attached to said members, of additional bows for increasing the size of said basic beater, and means for fastening said projected positions; It will be seen that the leaves 15 are hinged to the bent end portions '20 of the strips- 9 at21, while the leaves 18 additional bows to said transverse members comprising extension stripsiprojec'ti-ng be yond the ends/of said transverse members, the additional bows being attached to said to the transverse strips and the strips members. r r
4. The combination with a basic oarpet beater having a handle, transverse members and bows attached to said members, of additional bows for increasing the size of said basic beaten-andmeans for fastening said additional bows to said transverse members thereto.
comprising extension strips having slots in their inner ends to'embrace the main bows, said strips projecting beyond the transverse members and being detachably secured 5, A carpetbeater having a handle, transverse members and'bows attached to said members by being passed through the same,
the ends of said bows being bent over beflow one, of said transverse members, and
hinged leaves to engage said bent ends of the-bows for-the purpose specified.
A carpet beater having a transverse member, bows passed through said member "and having bent 'ends, hinged leaves to swing into engagement with saidbent ends of the bows, and'means'for retaining said leaves in suchposi-tion-m o r A carpet beater having a trans-verse member, bows passedthrough said member 7 and haVin'g bent ends, hinged leaves --to swing into engagement with said bent ends ofthe bows, "and bolts passed-through said 'me'mber'and leaves for retaining sa d leaves,
I a-gainstthe bent endsofthe'bows.
' V-additional bows, extension "strips'attac'hed thereto and connected to said frame mem her, said additional bows havingbent ends 8; fA carpet beater having a transverse frame member, main bows secured thereto,
underlying sa-id strips andhinged leaves on said strips having abutmentsto engage said bent ends *of the additional bows for I holding them in position. n
9.. A carpet beater having-a transverse frame member, main bows passed through' sald frame member and having bent ends underlying the same, ,extensionstrips at:
tached to the ends of said frame member,
carpet beater having a transverse said frame member and having bent ends underlying the same, extension strips attached to the ends of said frame member, additional bows passed through said strips and having bent ends underlying the same,
leaves hinged to said frame member for en-' gaging the bent ends of the main bows, and other hinged leaves having abutments to engage the bent ends of the additional K hows.
the same and having bent ends underlying 'SiLICl member, extension strlps -pro ect1ng at the ends :of said member, v'additional'bows passed through said strips and having'bentv 11'. A carpet beater having a transverse frame member, main bows passed through ends underlying-the same, leaves hinged to said frame member for engagingthe-bent ends of the main bows, other 'leaveshinged 'to the strips and having abutmentsto enwe the=bent ends of the additional bows,
and bolts passed through said frame mem- 7 r berand strips and also adapted to hold the hingedleaves in contact with the bent ends ofthe' bows as wellas-secure :said strips to said frame member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my a I name to this specification. I
a JOHN 0.;PIERCE.
