27 ATTORNEY STAS JOHN ORMANIEC AND GEORGE LEMBAS, OF NOVINGER, MISSOURI.
GARBAGE-BOX FOR WAGONS.
Application filed October 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Join: (hmnmmo, a citizen oi Poland, residing at Novinger, county of Adair, and l-ltate of Missouri, and Gnomes LEMBAS, a citizen of Poland, residing at Novinger, county of Adair, and State oi? Missouri, have invented certain new andv useful Improvements in lrlarbageBoxcs i'ior lVagons, oi which the tollowing is a specification.
This invention has for its object the provision oi. a receptacle or container for garbage, particularly adaptedto be applied to vehicles whereby the same may be trans ported for suitable disposal.
A further object is to provide a spring controlled. cover, adapted. to be manually operated so as to admit the ready entry of garbage and the like, the cover closing automatically so as to form a sanitary container.
Another object is to provide a diagonally positioned slideway upon which the container is adjustably mounted, and held at any desired height in a novel and practical manner.
These and other like objectsare attained by the novel construction and combination.
of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is a top plan view showing a garbage container made in accordance with the invention, indicating its application,
Fig. 2 is a. longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2--2 of F 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. t is a plan view further illustrating its application.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 5 5 of Fig. 6, and,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary front elevational view of the device.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 indicates a pair of opposed angular bars, arranged diagonally within the vehicle to which they are permanently applied, the same acting as a guideway for a rhomboidal. hollow receptacle having a bottom wall 11, adapted to fit between the vertical elements of the guide rails 10, and provided with an upper extension 12, adapted to rest upon projections fixed in the vehicle so as to limit its downward movement.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, 1920.
Serial No. 334,134.
Formed in the bottom plate 11 are a pair of slides 13,. joined with a solid bottom 1 li rom which extend a pair of lugs 15, carry ing at their lower ends pivot pins upon which are mounted angular detents 16, the sharp outer ends 17 being engageable with the inner side walls of the guide rails 10, and which are normally held thereagainst, due to the effect of compresion springs 18, arranged between the inner ends of the detents and the bottom wall 14.
Another pair of lugs 20, extends down from the bottom plate 14- and pivotally mounted in the lugs 20, are a pair of levers 21, their outer angular ends being adapted to make contact with the inner ends of the detent levers 16, while the inner ends of the lever 21 are pivoted to a handle 22 in such manner that as the handle is pressed up ward, toward the wall let, the detents are released from an engaging position with the guide rails, permitting the container to be adjusted longitudinally along the rails.
A cover plate 24, provided with a manually operable handle 25, is connected at the rear by hinges 26, with a fixed cover plate 27, the rear portion of the cover plate being extended laterally at both sides and pro vided with lugs 28, below which are secured the ends of coiled tensional springs 29, the other ends of the springs being suitably en with the side walls 13 of the container casing, the effect of the springs being to maintain the cover in a normally closed position, when the container is extended downward as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2, while Fig. 5 shows the container when in condition to receive waste material therein.
A fixed outer wall 30 extends transversely to the rear of the container and connected thereto by a hinge 31, is a door 32 having a hook shaped extension 33, engageable below the lower wall 14: except when manually raised for the purpose of removing the con tents of the container.
This door is reinforced by plates 34L, other similar plates 85 extending longitudinally of the rear cover wall 30, also extending along the side walls 13, are longitudinal re inforcing plates 36 forming a strong and substantial container for the purpose.
In operation, when it is desired to enter garbage or the like, the handle 25 is manually operated, raising the cover plate 2% on the hinges 26, while the handle 22 is raised, together with the container, to such an elevation as is convenient of access, thereupon the handle 22 is again raised freeing the detents from engagement with the guide rails 10, allowing the entire container to descend to a desired depth, so that the cover 24 may be replaced overjthe top of the receptacle in an obvious manner.
Then it is desired to empty the contents of the container the diagonally disposed cover plate 32 israised on the hinges 31, the container at that time beingin a lowered position so as to allow free access to the in- V terior.
avliicli said container is adapted to slide, de-
tents carried by said container engageable with said railswhereby the container may be held at a desired height, a cover for's'aid container, means for holding said cover in a closed position, and a hinged door for the outer wall of said container through which the contents are accessible.
2. In a garbage container of the class described, the combination with a pair of angularguiderails disposed in a diagonal plane and in spacedrelation, a rhomboidal container slidably engaged upon said guide rails, means for raising and lowering said container, means for holding said container inv adjustment on said guide rails, a spring actuated cover for said container, and a gravity operated'door at the lower end of said container whereby material may be entered or removed therefrom.
3. In a container of the class described, the comblnation with a pair of diagonally disposed, parallel spaced angular guide rails, of a container slidably engaged with said guide rails, a pair of spring actuated detents pivotally engaged at the bottom of said container and adapted to make contact between said guide rails, means, for actuating said detents whereby they may be released, a spring impelled cover, means for manipulating said cover, and a door hingedly engaged to cover an opening .in the outer wall of said container, said door being normally closedby gravity.
@111 a container of the class described, the combination with a pair of angular guidesdisposed in spaced parallel relation and in a diagonal plane, of a container slidablymounted in said guide rails, said container having the form of a hollow rhomboid, Ilugs extending downward from the lower walls of said container, detents pivoted in said lugs, said detents'being engageable with the inner surfaces of said angular rails, meansfor manually actuatingboth of said detents simultaneously whereby they may be disengaged, and said container raised, said container being adjustable to any height along said rails, a cover element fixedly engaged with the supports of said rails, a
' hinged cover element engaged with the said fixed element, a handle by which said hinged cover be operated, a pair of oppositely disposed springs engaged with said cover at one end, and with the side walls of said container at their opposite ends whereby said cover is normally closed, a door hingedly engaged with the outer wall of said cover coveringan opening therein, and means at the lower ends of said door engaging with the bottom of said container.
In testlmony whereof we have affiXedour signatures.
JOHN ORMANIEG. GEORGE LEMBAS.
