To alt fwfiom t may concern.'
lie it iinovvn that l, JOHN Enron, a snlo- 'ect oi the Kin@ oi Great Britain resici` D 7 ing at chenectady, county of Schenectady, State Blew York, have invent'v new and useful Improvements Control- Switches, oi which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates .to electric circuit controllers and has for its object the provision oi' an improved device of this character v'hereby electric circuits may be changed in a simple ancl eliicient manner.
My invention relates more specifically to circuit controller having a number of positions in which it is possible to move from one contact position to any one of number of other contact positions Without making` contact at the intermediate posi tion or positions. l
ln carrying out my invention, l provide a rotatable contact member which is normolly in a position so that its contacts Will not engage 'with stationary contacts when the member is rotated. To adjust the conn troller to position the member is turned to the proper position. whereupon the memher is moved out of its normal position and into engaging position with the stationary contacts.
ln the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention Figure l is a sicle view of the complete device, Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the controller frame; and Fie. el shows a detail of the hancl Wheel.
eierring to the clrawin s i() represents an elon'ateci 'frame preferaoiy composed of strips ci insulating nia'teriai ll, heid place Foy end pieces l2. Loctecl centrally of this frame is a shaft i3 having hearings in the enti pieces and turned oy means ci a hand Wheel 14. Located. on the frame and concentrically with the shaft are stationary i contacts i5, which may be 'tiistributecl lonn gitudinally thereof as shown. Mountecl upon the shaft are a plurality oi' contacts llo, i7 anil i8 which are arrangecl to engage with the stationary contacts. As sho-wn, the contacts are of the double hreal; type held in place hy clamps 19. A. spring 20 forces the shaft iongiturlinally so that the contacts i6, L and 18 will not engage with the stationary contacts when the shaft is turned. For locating the shaft in various Specication ez" Letters Patent.

serial ne. sessel.
Contact positions l provide projections 2 in a (lisit secured to the shaft, which projections cooperate iii notches 23 in the stationary frame The shaft is of course c 'linirical 'Where it passes through f the sn by engaging,- a projection 25 thereon.
1n operation it Will be seen that when the liancl Wheel lil is turned to the proper position to make the clesirecl connections, and the cam is turned to force the shaft longitudinally, the contacts on the sha'it will engage the stationary contacts. lll/"lien the cam is turned 'to release the shaft the latter Will move 'backward out of Contact., have not attempted to show any ineens for operating the cam since this may he clone in cation oi the controller end the nso to which it is pnt. L,
.it will he seen that l have provided a circuit controller in which 'while there are a number ci consecutive Contact positions it may he moved te any one of there without making contact at intermediate positions.
While .l have ciescribecl my infi'ention as embodying e concrete structure and as operating in a speciic manner accordance the patent statutes,
with the provisions o.. it shoulcl he unclerstoocl that do not limit my invention thereto, since tl soi will suogest cations t those shined in the from the spirit of my invention, the s of wviiicn is set forth in the annexed claims.
'What claim as newv and cure by Letters Patent o; States, is:
l. A circuit controller L Y n rality oi sets ci' radially dispo-sei ary contacts mounted on a support Afor the same with intervening spaces between the sets of contacts, a shaft havingf a plurality of contacts ar anged longi uclinaily thereof rotatable positions t stationary contacts hut norinaliy engage longitudinally against lili ment therewith during its movement, and means for forcing said shaft longitudinally from its normal position into engagement with any of the fixed contacts when it reaches a position adjacent thereto.
2. A circuit controller comprising a plu.- rality of sets of radially disposed stationary contacts mounted on a support for the saine with intervening spaces between the sets of contacts, a shaft having a plurality of contacts arranged longitudinally1 thereof rotatable to positions adjacent the stationary contacts but normally out of engagement therewith during its movement, and a cam arranged to force the shattlongitudinally from its normal position into engagement with any ot the fixed contacts when it reaches a position adjacent thereto.
anstehen upon the frame lon itudinally of the shaft an'dconoentrically t erewith, contacts upon Saul shaft rotatable to positions adjacent the statlonary contacts7 a spring tor torcling the shaft longitudinally so that its contacts will be out of engaging relation with the stationary contacts during the 'movement of the shaft, and means for forcing the shaft longitudinally against the spring into engagement with any of the fixed contacts when it reaches a position adjacent thereto.
ln Witness whereof, l have hereunto set my hand this 24th day ot July, 1918,
