TOaZZ 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrrr IVoLrr, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York,have invented a certain new and useful Indicator for Phonograph-Reproducers, of which the following isa specification.

My invention relates to indicators for positioning the reproducers oftalking machines.

The objects of my invention areto provide visual means whereby the reproducing stylus may be placed in theproper position in the record groove, whereby the operator will not be eompelled'to watch the point of the stylus when starting the machine.

A further object is to provide an inclicator which will not interfere with the'operation of the machine, and which, when'not in use, will be practically concealed from view. g

Another object of my invention is to provide means to indicate the point in the record groove corresponding to the stylus position on said record groove.

A further object of the invention is the provision of means of the character described, simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and so designed and constructed that it may be readily and easily attached to disk talking machines now in general use.

lVith these and other objects in view to be more fully set forth hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described in the specification and illustratedin'the'accompanying drawings considered together or separately.

The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving avariety of mechanical expressions, some of which for the purpose of illustrating the invention, are shown in the accompanying drawings.

The invention will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then more specifically defined and indicated in the appended claims.

I have illustrated my invention "in connection with a reprodnccr in which the stylus 155 set at a point beneath the soundbox and thereby practically concealed from view, but I desire to have it understood that the invention may be carried out in connection with other types of'reproducer.

'In carrying out my invention, I provide a cabinet '1 have a motor board 2,to the under side of which is attached the usual motor mechanism. A turn-table shaft 3, rotated by the motor, extends through the motor board and carries thereon a turntable l, supporting a record groove disk 5.

A tone-arm is provided having communication with a horn (not shown), said tone arm comprising a member 7 secured to the motor board in any well-known manner, and an arm 8' to the free extremity of which is removably secured a sound-box 9. The sound-box is provided with the usual diaphragm (not shown), and stylus arm 10. The lower end of the stylus arm is c011- nected to a stylus holder in which is seated a stylus 11. The stylus is mounted beneath the sound-box, and is at an acute angle relatively to the record groove.

Secured-to the tone-arm in any suitable manner, near its outer extremity, is a pedestal '12 carrying :an index pointer 13, the extremity of which is the same distance from'the center oftheturn-t:'ible shaft as is the point of the stylus, whereby the pointer will, when the sound-box is in playing position, be directly in the same groove with which the stylus is in engagement.

In Fig. 3, I have shown a modification in which the pointer is aflixed to the sound box. In the modification I provide a lug 1a rigidly secured to the rear of the soundbox. An arm carrying a pointer 15 is pivoted to the lug 1%. The lug is provided with a stop 16 which will limit the downward movement of the arm. hen not in use, the arm is swung upward, as indicated in dotted lines, and will then be in position "within limits of the sound-box, and the entire 'device may be packed in a carton or other container, as heretofore.

In operation, a record is placed on the turn-table, and the motor started. The tonearm is normally in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, with the stylus supstylus being the same distance from the center of the turn-table spindle upon which is centered the groove record disk.

In accordance with the provisions of the patent statute, I have described the principle of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiments thereof, but I desire it understood that my invention is not confined to the particular form of apparatus herein shown and described, the same being merely illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out 1n other ways wlthout departing from the spirit of my invention, and,

therefore, I claim broadly the right to employ all equivalent instrumentalities coming within the scope of the appended claims, and

' by means of which objects of my invention are attained, and the new results accomplished, as herein set forth, as it is obvious that the particular embodiments herein shown and described are only some of many that can be employed to attain these objects and accomplish these results.

Having now described my invention, what I claimand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows 1. A talking machine having a record disk, there being a record groove 1n the disk,

1 a sound-box having a stylus for engagement with the groove, and means situated at the same distance from the center of the turntable shaft as is the stylus and in proximity to that portion of the record groove adapted to be engaged by the stylus for indicating when the stylus is in position to engage the groove. 7

2. A talking machine having a record disk, there being a record groove in the disk, a sound-box having a stylus for engagement with the groove, and means movable with the sound-box, said means being the same distance from the center of the turn-table shaft as is the stylus and in proximity to that portion of the record groove adapted to be engaged by the stylus for indicating when the stylus is in position to engage the groove.

8. A talking machine having a record disk, there being a record groove in the disk, a sound-box having a stylus for engagement with the groove, and a pointer movable with the sound-box, the extremity of the pointer being at the same distance from the center of the turn-table shaft as is the stylus, said pointer being in proximity to the record groove to be engaged by the stylus.

4:. A talking machine having. a record disk, there being a record groove in the disk, a sound-box having a stylus for engagement with the groove, and a pivoted pointer, the extremity of which is the same distance from the center of the turn-table shaft as is the stylus point, said pointer lying in proximity to the groove adapted to be engaged by the stylus.

5. In a talking machine, a spindle, a turntable carried by said spindle, a grooved record disk on the turn-table, a tone-arm carrying a sound-box, a stylus in said sound-box for engagement with the record groove, a lug on the sound-box, an arm pivoted thereto, a stop forming part or" the lug to limit movement of the arm in one direction, a pointer on said arm, which is the same distance from the center of the turn-table shaft as is the stylus point, said pointer indicating when the stylus is in position to engage the record groove, and means to adjust said arm.
