BUILDING STRUCTURE.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
Application mea my 15, 1919. serial No. 310,964.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HARKNESS, a sub'ect of the King of the United Kingdom of irreat Britain and Ireland, and residing at Ayr, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Building Structure, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to an improvement in wall construction.'
The invention consists broadly in a wall structure comprising upright concrete beams or slabs of H-section set on a cast base with the edges of the flanges abutting and having a tongue and groove or similar interlocking means with one another, the webs of said upright beams constituting studs, a
horizontally disposed concrete beam of substantially H-section having a tongue and groove or the like interitting with the upper ends vof the uprightbeams and presenting a channel along t e upper portion of the H and a channel along the lower portion of the H, the upper channel serving to accommodate concrete or reinforced concrete, and the lowerA channel being engaged by the studs.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is an elevation of a wall construction, Fig. 2 a
plan, Fig. 3 a vertical section, Fig. 4 Van isometric projection and Fig. 5 a fragmentary view showing the) horizontal beam in position.
As shown, the wall is formed of upright beams or slabs 1 of concrete of H section set on a suitably cast, base 2, the flanges forming the inner and outer faces of the wall, the edges of the flanges of adjoining beams having a tongueA and groove fitting with one another, as indicated at 3, the webs of said upright Abeams constituting studs 4 the upper ends of which protrude from the beams and the lower ends of which stop` short of the lower ends 'of the beams by an amount equal to the depth of the foundation fillet.
The upright beams of each wall have a l tongue and groove or other fitting at their 50 tally disposed concrete beam 6 of substanupper ends as indicated at 5 with a horizontially H section forming a lintel course, of which the channel 7 forming the upperv ortion of the H is filled with concrete in W 'ch may be embedded reinforcement, while the studs 4 fit into the channel 8 forming the lower portion of the H.
f lhe upright flanges of the beam 6 may be thickened below the web to accommodate reinforcmg rods or the like (not shown).
.The web of the beam 6 need not belocated mldway' of the. flanges as shown, it being necessary only to provide a lower channel large enough to accommodate the studs 4.
A s shown in Figs. l and 2, certain of the upright beams l may stop short of the level of the horizontal beam 6, so as to leave space for a window frame or frames, such as 9.
. Air-holes 10 may be formed in the uprlght beams l to connect the cavities formed in the wall betweenI the flanges of the upright beams.
faces of a cavity wall, the webs of said beams constituting studs and protruding at the upper ed es beyond rthe ianges, and a horizontally isposed beam of substantially H section and of a cross'section equal to that of said upright-beams and fitting the upper ends of the said upright beams.
2. A wall structure comprising a base, upright concrete beams of H section set on said base with the edges of thepilanges abutting and interengaged with one another, said beams forming vertically connected outer and inner faces of a cavity wall, and the webs of said beams constituting studs protruding at the outer edge beyond the flanges, andl a horizontally disposed concrete beam of substantially H section and of a cross section equal to that of said upright beams, the flanges of which horizontally disposed beam abut the flanges of said upright beams.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN HARKNESS.
