UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. EVENSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO GOSS PRINTING PRESS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
PRINTING-PLATE CLAMP.
I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
Application filed November 6, 1917, seriainb. 200,501. Renewed January 8, i919. Serial No. 270,213.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. EVEN SEN, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements inv Printing- Plate Clamps, of which the following is a specification. V i
The invention relates to adjustable plate clamps, such as are used in positioning and holding .in position electrotype, stereotype and other plates upon the cylinderor other form bearing member of'a printing press.
The invention consists in the novel artiparts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter, and in part will be obvious herefrom, or may be learned by practice with the invention; the same being realized and attained through the means, instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims. V
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description serve to illustrate the principles thereof.
Of the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clamp in place in a slot in the press bed and engaging the plate, the plate and bed being Fig. 5 is an isometric detail of the wedge piece cooperating with the clamp body.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, illustrating by way of example the present preferred embodiment of the invention, the clamping jaw or plate engaging member 1 is provided with an undercut edge 2, adapted to take over and engage with the beveled edge 3 of the plate 4:, which plate rests upon the bed 5 of I downwardly into the slot 7 in the bed 5.
The body 6 of the clamp is formed in its upper part to substantially fill the slot 7, the slot being preferably undercut or dovetailed, being widerin cross section at the bottom than the top, and having its sides sloping. uniformly upwardly toward each other.
In the upper portion of the body 6 is an internally screwthreaded hole 9 adapted to receive the serewthreads on the body 10 of the clamping screw. The clamping screw is provided with an enlarged, conically shaped head 11, which head is at the lower end and within the slot 7 in the bed plate. The tip or upper end of the screw is providedwith a slot 12, by which a screw driver may be employed to turn the screw and thus move it upwardly and downwardly with respect to the body 6 of the plate clamp. The body of the plate clamp, in the downwardly depending portion 13 is cut out hemi-conieally, or formed to fit closely the tapered or conical head of the clamping screw (see Fig. 3).
The clamp body (3 is longitudinally recessed substantially centrally from the bottom upwardly for a portion of the depth of the body and then outwardly to one side.
The expanding member rests within this re cess and is approximately of the same shape as the recess. The clamp body and expanding member are forced apart to fix the clamp in position in the slot. The expanding member 14 which cooperates with the clamp body as stated to hold the clamp in position in the slot, as embodied consists of an elongated member or bar shaped substantially in cross section to fit into the recess in the slot betweenthe upper portion and the downwardly depending portion of the clamp body, and preferably of the same lengthwith the body of the clamp. This cooperating clamping or expanding member is shaped or hollowed on its inner side at. 15 into hemi-conical form to cooperate with the tapered or conical head 11 of the expanding screw.
The operation of the clamp will be readily understood. A screw driver is inserted into the slot 12 of the expanding screw, which is always accessible from the top of the clamp. As the screw is turned and thus 50 upright faces of the body "and expanding member having corresponding hemi-conical' moves upwardly, the conical head 11 there of drives the cooperating expanding mem ber lit away transversely from the body or the clamp, thereby firmly wedging the clamp'in the groove in the bed. By turning the screw in the opposite direction, the clamp is loosened and may he slid along the groove.
The 'clampis of ajvery simple andsturdy constructiom having 'but two parts besidesthe screw. The cooperating clamping mem bers are simple, solid and strong. Thebody oflthe clamp is very large, occupying the greater part of the cross-sectional space in the groove in the plate bed, and the cooperating expanding member is also simple and strong; The clampbody andhead being 1Iltegral gives'a very strong construction, and
the'large" size of the clamping'body also serves to protect it during the hard usage given to clamps by many pressmen, as for instance driving clamps along the groove after they have been screwed up quite tightly into clamping position. lhe clamp 5 ing screw cannot come out'of the clamp and cause damage to the press or plates. There is also'great advantagein the utilization of the-headless screws, as the breaking off-oi the screwheads with consequent damage of the press or plates, and the screw is at all times insideof the clamp. Other advantages will be obvious herefrom or may be learned by practice with the invention.
It will be understood that changes may bei'n'ade from'the details of construction as shown and described, within the scope of the accompanying claims, without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1
