Be it known that I, BURNHAM C. STICK- xnr, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain sired blanks or forms that are also printed upon the same or the reverse side of the paperv 1 connect a spot-applying device to a printing press, which may be any one'of the various types used for printing-forms repeatei'lly upon a paper web, and which is preferably of a perfecting type, so that the webs printed thereby may be printed on both sides, with a View to fairfolding them longitudinally for subsequent use upon a typewriting machine. The press is preferably of a rotary type; that is, one in which the type forms revolve continuously, each in a single direction.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to apply carbon or manifolding spots upon the web as it is passing through the printing press, so that a single operation or handling of the web su'llices for both printing and spotting the same with carbon once or more than once for every form that is repeated upon the web.
In lieu of printing the lines and the spot from the same form and therefore using the same ink for all, I employ other means to apply the nianifolding spot, and apply it at another time than when the impression of the printed form is being made upon the paper. Preferably, the carbon is brushed on, by the use of a brush of a type commonly used in coatingpaper with carbon.
Ether features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

Fig. 5 is a diagram of a part of a fan-fold web, showing manifolding spots applied upon opposite sides thereo I The carbon brush 10 is preferably mounted in a hollow cylinder or drum 11, which preferably cooperates with another cylinder 1-2 to form a carbon-spotting couple between which the web 13 passes,.and bywhich the carbon let, Fig. 5, is applied to the web "during its passage. This internal carbon brush 10 "is given an independent rotation or planetary movement, so that, as said brush is carried bodily around the shaft 15 of the cylinder, once in every revolution, it con tacts withthe web 13, where the latter is supported by the companion cylinder 12, and .applies carbon thereto; the supply of carbon being in the form of a reservoir or other container 16 confined within the revolving cylinder with the brush 10, said brush running in contact with the supply of carbon in the container; although other methods of supplying the brush and of applying manifolding material to the surface of'the web may be employed. The brush 10 preferably revolves at relatively high speed, and preferably in a direction opposite to that in which the brush-containing cylinder 11 rotates. A small portion of the brush protrudes through an opening 17 in the cylinder 11, and the opening may be of any suitable size, form and location, to predetermine the area, shape and position of the carbon spot 14 which is placed upon the web. 7 p
Rotation of the brush 10 upon its own axis 18 is secured by means of a pinion 19 pr0- vided upon said axis and connected up to a gear 20 fixed upon'the framework 21 of the press. The gear 20 may be of internal type, and, if desired, the pinion may run'directly in mesh therewithybutpreferably an idle pinon 22, also mounted upon the cylinder 11 is inserted between the brush-pinion 19 and the internal gear 20, so as to revolve the brush 10 in the same direction as its cylinder 11 rotates, but at a substantially higher speed. The brush may be otherwise connected up to secure any desired speed or direction of rotation thereof.
To afi'ord opportunity for rotative adjustment of the spot opening 17 in the brush cylinder 11, there is provided between the cylinder and its shaft or axle 15, an adjustable worm 23 mounted upon the gear 24, Fig. 2, to mesh with a worm gear 24 mounted upon the shaft 15, whereby any desired relative adjustment may be secured. Gear 21 meshes with drive gear 25, and also with coupling gear 26 on the companion cylinder 12. The gear 25 is connected to drive the feed or sheet- conveyer rolls 25, 25", in a well-known manner, by a train of gearing, a partwhereof is seen at 25, said train also operating. the upper and lower type and impression cylinders 25 25 the inking rolls 225 and other parts of the printing press in a manner well known in the art.
The cylinder 11 is preferably also adjustable longitudinally of its shaft, so as to aid further in locating the spot upon the web. For this purpose, the cylinder is slidable along shaft l5, and is provided with a setscrew 27, to secure it adjustably to said shaft. The fixed internal gear 20 may be broadened, as shown, to permit the adjustment of the pinions 19 and 22 with said cylinder 11 while the pinion 22 remains in mesh with said gear 20.
Inasmuch as it may be desired to apply manifolding spots upon both sides of the web 13, I preferto make the companion cylinder 12 of the spot-applying couple substantially similar in all respects to the cylinder 11 and appurtenances just described, including a carbon brush .28 protruding through a spot opening therein, and operated by a similar set of gears, and similarly adjustable in two directions. The brush in each cylinder may cooperate with a smooth or uncut portion of the opposite cylinder, so that each cylinder will operate alternately as a support for the web and as a device to apply carbon or carbon paste or ink to the web.
Each cylinder may be provided with a hinged section 29 in its periphery, this section being opened about its hinge 30 by the insertion of ascrewdriver or other instrument in the depression 30 to give access to the interior for examination and for supplying additional carbon to the receptacle therein from which it is taken up by the brush. Fig. 2 shows the device fitted up for spotting only one side of the web.
Either of the cylinders may, if desired, have a plurality of brushes 10 and 31, Fig. 3, each brush havin a spot opening 17 and 32, Fi 4, and thus each cylinder may make two spots (or more if desired) upon the web 13 at each revolution of the cylinder; that is,
two or more spots for each form may be printed or applied upon the face of the web. These brushes may be provided with coatingsupply receptacles 16 and 33; and may have pinions 19 and 34 to run in mesh with the same internal gear 20, or they may be otherwise connected for independent rotation at the required speed in the required direction.
In any spotting couple, one member may have a single brush for making a single spot, and the other may have a plurality of brushes for making a plurality of spots. Any cylinder may be readily detached, by unscrewing set-screw 27 and also a set-screw 35 in a collar 36 on shaft 15, and withdrawing the shaft; whereupon a different cylin der, having other spot opening or openings, may be substituted in the machine.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a printing press having means for inking and printing a form upon one side of a sheet, of a revoluble carbon brush, and mechanism to cooperate *ith said brush for applying a spot of manifolding coating upon said sheet in conjunction with the form printed thereon, said cooperating mechanism including means to revolve the brush relatively to the sheet during contact between the brush and sheet.
2. The combination with a printing press of the rotary web-perfecting type, having a driving mechanism of brushes to engage opposite surfates of the web, and mechanism connected to said driving mechanism for cooperating with said brushes for repeatedly applying spots of manifolding material to said surfaces, said cooperating mechanism including means to move the brushes over the surfaces of the web while in contact therewith, and at a different rate of speed.
8. The combination with means for conveying a web, of a brush, and mechanism to cooperate therewith for repeatedly applying a spot of manifolding material to the surface of the web, said cooperating mechanism including means to move the brush over the surface of the web, at a speed differing from the web, while in contact therewith.
4. The combination with means for conveying and printing a sheet, of a rotary brush, and mechanism effective while the sheet is being conveyed, for rotating said brush over the surface of the sheet, to apply thereto a spot of manifolding coating.
The combination with means for conveying a sheet, of means, running at a different speed, for brushing carbon over the surface of the sheet to produce a predefined spot of carbon coating thereon during the motion of the sheet.
6. The combination with means for conveying a web of paper, of means connected to said conveying means, and running at a dili'erent speed, for brushing or wiping carbon over the surface of the web to produce a carbtm spot on said web repeatedly-at inface of the web, at a speed differing from the web, to produce a spot of carbon thereon.
9. The combination with a hollow cylinder and means to lead a sheet past said cylinder. of a revoluble brush in said cylinder, and means to revolve said brush and bring it bodily into and out of position to brush a carbon coating upon said sheet.
10. The combination with a hollow cylin der and means to lead a sheet past said cylinder. of a revoluble brush in said cylinder, means to revolve said brush and bring it bodily into and out ofposition to brush a carbon coating upon said sheet, and a cooperating cylinder geared to the first-mentioned linder for supporting the sheet at the brushing operation.
11. The combination with two cooperating members. between which a sheet of paper is led, of a carbon brush mounted upon one of said members, and means to move the brush over the surface of the paper, and'at a speed ditiering from the paper, to apply a spot of carbon to the sheet as it passes said members.
12. The combination with means for conveying a web of paper, of cylinders coupled together upon opposite sides or surfaces of the web, and means carried by said cylinders for brushing or wiping over the surfaces of the web to produce carbon spots on said sides or surfaces repeatedly at intervals along the web.
13. The combination with means for conveying a web, of a device over which the web passes. said device having an opening therein, a. brush larger than said opening and protruding therethrough in position to contact with the web, and means for operating said brush to apply a spot of manifolding coating to said web, as defined by said opening, at predetermined intervals along said web.

The combination with a pair of coupled hollow cylinders, of revoluble brushes therein, means to revolve said cylinders for bringing the brushes into and out of position to engage a sheet, and means to revolve said brushes over the surface of the sheet, to produce carbon coatings upon the opposite sides of the sheet.
15. The combination with twocooperating members, between which a sheet of paper is led, of a carbon brush mounted within one of said members to protrude through a re stricted opening therein to apply a spot of carbon to the sheet as it passes said-members, means for revolving said members in unison, and means for revolving said brush about its own axis.
16. The combination with two cooperating members, between which a sheet of paper is led, of a carbon brush mounted within one of said members to protrude through a restricted opening therein, to. apply a spot of carbon to the sheet as it passes said mem- V hers, means for revolving said members in unison, and means for revolving said brush about its own axis at higher speed than that at which said members revolve.
17. The combination with a revoluble cyl inder or drum having an opening,'of a rotary brush mounted on the cylinder to pro trude from said opening, said opening being relatively small, a container for a supply of coating material in said cylinder for said brush, a pinion connected to said brush, fixed gear entrained with said pinion, and means to revolve said cylinder, whereby the brush will be relatively rotated by said fixed gear.
18. The combination with a revoluble cylinder or drum having an opening, of a r0- tary brush mounted on the cylinder to protrude from said opening, said opening being relatively small, a container for a supply of coating material in said cylinder for said brush, a pinion connected to said brush, a fixed gear entrained with said pinion, means to revolve said cylinder, whereby the brush will be relatively rotated by said fixed'gear, and an idle pinion intervening between said pinion and said fixed gear.
19. The combination with a printing press having type-impressing means, of a hollow cylinder having a brush protruding therefrom, for applying manifolding material to the surface of a sheet passing through the printing press, said cylinder mounted upon a shaft, driving means for said shaft, and
means for eifecting relative rotative adjustment between said cylinder and said shaft; said driving means connected to the main drive of said printing press.
20. The combination with a printing press for effecting relative rotative adjustment between said cylinder and said shaft; said driving means connected to the main drive of said printing press, and means for affording adjustment of said cylinder in axial direction, whereby a spot can be accurately located upon the sheet passing through the press.
21. In combination, two hollow cylinders connected together to occupy positions upon opposite sides of a web passing between them, a brush in each cylinder; each cylinder having a relatively restricted opening through which the brush protrudes; means for rotating the cylinders; and means for operating said brushes relatively to said cylinders.

The combination with means for conveying a web, of means for applying groups of spots upon the surface of said web repeatedly, comprising a hollow cylinder having therein a plurality of coating brushes, said cylinder having relatively restricted openings through which said brushes protrude, means within said cylinder for apply ing coating material to said brushes, and means for operatin said cylinder.

A cylinder having mounted therein a coating brush and having a relatively restricted opening through which a portion of said brush may protrude, means for operat ing said brush relatively to said cylinder, and means in said cylinder to supply coating material to said brush, said cylinder comprising a portion hinged to the body oi" the cylinder, to be opened to give access to its interior.
