a INVENTOR -ATTORN Y the space went, comprises a four legged table, the
table-legs and is adapted UNITED STATES EMIL A. KQPF, OF NEWARK, AND MARTIN HEMLEB,
Assrenons To THE NEW JERSEY.
PATENT OFFICE.
OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY,
SEWING-MACHINE CABINET.
Original application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WGLEMIL A. Kerr and MARTIN HnMLEn, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Newark, in the county of lflssex and State of New J ersey, and at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Cabinets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to-the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for an object to pro vide a sewing machine cabinet of simplified construction including means for manually driving and controlling the sewing machine; the parts of the cabinet being arranged so that they may be conveniently shifted or folded in such a manner, when not in use, as to inclose the sewing machine and practically conceal the same together with the various controlling and driving devices therefor, whereby the complete outfit will have the neat and trim appearance of. and be adapted for use as, an ordinary table.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description and claim.
The invention, in its preferred emboditop of which is apertured to receive the usual belt driven a are provided whereby the sewing head may be dropped or swung below the table-top; the latter includingend-leaves which may be folded. over to meet along the center line extending transversely ofthc tal letop. A treadle is supportednear the floor within defined by the table-legs and is connected by a pit nan to a drive-wheel journaled at the under side of a lower leaf or shelf member which is hinged at one end to a cross-piece carried by an endpair of the to be swung from a substantially horizontal position, concealing said treadle and drive-wheel, to an upright position exposing said treadle and "drivewheel and positioning the latter in operativc relation to said tr'eadle andt'o the driven pulley of the sewing head with which said drive\vheel na be connected by means of the usual belt.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 an elevation of the invention with the parts in open or running position. Fig. 2'is a sewing head. Means Specification of Letters Patent.

closed or inoperative position.
and support Patented All. 17, 1920.
and this application filed August similar view with the parts folded into Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary'rear elevation of the treadle-control mechanism showing the op erative connection between the treadle and driving pitman. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan View of the treadle. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the retaining latch for the treadle concealing leaf or shelf and Fig. 7 is a sectional view showing the means for supporting one of the extension leaves of the tabletop in the position shown in Fig. 1.
As disclosed in our co'pending application Serial No. l9l,-l95, filed Sept. 14,1917, of which this application is a division, the present cabinet, in its preferred embodiment, includes a table having a table-top 1 supported at its four-corners by legs 2, the end pairs of which are connected by upper and lower end braces or cross-bars 3 and 4, respectively, which support the spaced and vertically disposed end-slats 5.
The means incorporated in the cabinet for supporting the sewing head so that it may be swung or dropped from the position shown in Fig. 3 to a position below the level of the table-top are constructedsubstantially in accordance with the disclosure in the United States patent to Diehl (at ((7.. No. 541.474.: the rear side of the machine bedplate being supported by the usual hinged pins, one of which is shown at 6, and the front side of said bed-plate resting upon the lip 7 of the hinged leaf 8. \Vhen the machine is to be dropped below the table-top 1 the hinged leaf8 is first lifted to carry its lip Tout of range of the font edge of the machine base. whereupon the machine may be lowered in the usual manner into the receptacle beneath the tabletop. The usual counterbalancing spring 9 acts to partially support the machine head, all as more fully escr bed in tl! said l lichl e! at. patent.
In the present instance. the cabinet is equipped with any suitable belt driven sewing head. Such a sewing head usually includes a bed it) from which rises a standard .11 carrying a bracket -ar1n 12 within which journaled a main-shaft 1), Fig. 3, upon the rearwardly projecting end of which is secured the usual hand or balance-wheel '13 having a belt-groove 14 for the driving belt 15.
Hinged to the opposite ends of the tabletop 1 are the extension leaves 16. 16, the left-hand one of which, Fig. l. is supported in open position by the rod 17 which is slidably received within the sheath 18 screwed to the under side of the table-top 1, as shown in Fig. 7 \Vhen the cabinet is closed, the extension leaves 16. 16 are folded over upon the table-top 1 and meet at the center of the latter to conceal the aperture for the sewing head and form a smooth fiat top for the cabinet which then has the appearance of a simple table.
Secured to the cross-bars -l are brackets 19 formed with socketed bosses 20 in which are fixedly secured the opposite ends of the round tie-rod 21 which supports the treadle 22; the latter being formed with the depending apertured ears 23 entered by said tie-rod and held in position longitudinally of the latter by suitable collars 2 t.
Hinged to the ledge 25 which projects inwardly from the right hand cross-bar l is the lower leaf or shelf member 26 on the inner side of which is rotatably mounted the grooved drive-wheel 27 carrying a ball crank-pin 28 embraced by the socketed upper end of the pitman 29. the lower end of which carries a ball 30 embraced by the socketed extension piece 31 which is detachably secured to the treadle 22 by screws 32. As will be observed. the socket of the extension piece 31 which embraces the ball 30 is formed of two separable disks 33 and 34 secured together and to the extension 31 by screws 35: said disks being cut away at one side to afford a clearance space 36 permitting the pltman 29 to assume the down turned position illustrated in Fig. :2.
The leaf 26 is retained in upright or running position by means of the latch 37 mounted to turn upon the stud-pin 58 carried by the plate 39 screwed to the inner face of the right-hand cross-bar 3. Figs. L and 3. The latch 37 comprises a stop 0 itiapted to arrest the upward and outward IIOYQIHBDE of the eat :26 and a retainer )lOJQCIlOIl *1 adapted to be turned so as to pro ect below the upper edge of the leaf :26 vnen in uprightposition. as shown in Fig. 1. when the leaf 26 is lowered to closed or .noperative position. Fig. 2, the treadle and irive-wneel are substantially concealed from Y'IQWZ the ball-and-socket connections at the ipposite ends of the pltman .29 permitting lOSIlIQ of the leaf 26 without disconnection it said pltman from the treadle and drivng wneel.
The cabinet is provided with suitable irawers for accessories and attachments. The large center drawer 42 is hinged at 13 '0 swing outwardly and downwardly to open position. while the smaller end drawers 1H lire slidably mounted in the usual manner.
The specific embodiment of the liiveiitloii .nown :ind lQSt'I'lbOtl is not intended to inilt the scope of the appended claim as it viii be apparent to those skilled in the art hat the described construction is susceptible 1r material modification both in the form and arrangement of the various parts withn the spirit of the invention.
Having thus set forth the nature of the .nvention what we ciaini herein is sewing machine cabinet comprising a table-top. supporting means at the opposite ends of silltl table-top. a leaf forming a shelf carried by said supporting means herow the tabletop. a trcadle mounted below 1nd concealed bv said leaf. said leaf being nvotallv sustained at one end of the table ind adapted to be swung to an upright or men position at said end of the table to exosc said treadle. and a drive-wheel nionntd on said leaf and adapted for operative ()liIlCCIlOH with said treadle.
in testimony wnereof. we have signed our iames to tnis specification.
