Description
,P. E. WALKER.
CHICKEN BROODER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 9. 1920.
.1 ,349, 175 Patented Aug 10, 1920.
W/TIVESSES WW affoznca PERCEVAIL E. WALKER, OF HOLBROOK, OREGON.
CHICKEN-BROODER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1920.
Application filed January 9, 1920. Serial No. 350,341.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCEVAIL E. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holbrook, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken- Brooders, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention relates to improvements in poultry brooders and the objects of the in vention are first to' secure a good circulation of warm air so that same will reach each portion of the brooder, and secondly, to prevent the entrance into the brooding chamber of any gases from the lamp or other source of heat employed to keep the air within the brooding chamber at the proper temperature.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts as will be herein after fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a section taken of Fig. 1.
By referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the brooding chamber which is provided with the floor 3 having four vertical walls extending therefrom which walls are provided with the doors 15 leading up to which are provided inclined foot pieces 2. A heating chamber 6 is provided below the brooding chamber 1 so as to support same and has the legs 5 at each corner thereof. The heating chamber 6 is provided with the bottom 7 which is provided with the circular open ing 11 and the rectangular opening 13 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. S1tuated above the opening 11 is a sheet iron shield which is attached to one of the side walls by means of a flange 20 as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Extending from the shield 10 there is provided an 1nclined partition 8 which has provided at its upper portion an opening 9. The uppermost partition of the heating chamber is formed of a formaminous material so that the heat may come into direct engagement with the floor 3. The purpose of the partition 21 is to prevent the chickens from geton the line 44 ting into the heating chamber when the brooding chamber is taken therefrom.
A strip 1 is provided upon the bottom portion of the brooding chamber 1 so as to extend over the heating chamber 6 for holding said brooding chamber firmly upon the heating chamber. A lamp 12 or any other suitable source of heat is placed through the aperture 11. The heat generated by 12 will take the path shown by the arrows in Fig. 1 so as to heat the floor 3. The cold air will pass through the opening 9 and finally through the rectangular opening 13 provided in the bottom wall 7. By having the shield 10 constructed of sheet metal, it will be seen that any flames which may escape from the source of heat 12 will not come into engagement with the floor 3. At the same time it will. be seen that the heat will be evenly distributed throughout the floor 3 so as to cause an even temperature throughout the brooding chamber 1.
am aware that brooding chambers of various constructions may be used upon my heating chamber and I reserve the widest latitude in this respect. I am also aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction in the heating chamber herein shown and described can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as clearly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is In a poultry brooder, the combination of a brooding chamber and a heating chamber, said heating chamber provided with a foraminous partition at its top and a partition at its bottom provided with a circular opening and a rectangular opening, a shield situated within said chamber and over said circular opening, a source of heat provided within said circular opening, an inclined partition leading from said shield to the top of said heating chamber, the upper portion of said inclined partition provided with an opening, said brooding chamber situated upon said heating chamber whereby the floor of the brooding chamber will be heated.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PEROEVAIL E. WALKER.
