Specification-of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 10, 192a.
Application filed April 10, 1919. Serial No. 288,956.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL F. TRo'r rNow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock-Island and Stateof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Capping the following is aspecification. 'My invention has reference to bottle capping machines, for use in supplying the tops of bottles containing beverages of various kinds with metal caps. The chief purpose thereof is to provide a device of that char-- acter of simple form, having a minimum number of parts, and which can be cheaply produced.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows my invention in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail of the plunger mechanism. Fig. 3 is a detail of the lever 10, in plan view.
1 represents a base, in which is mounted astandard 2, slidable upon which is a cylindrical head 3. Projecting outwardly from r the head 3 is aweb 4:, at the outer end of) which is carried a sleeve 5. Vertically slid able in the sleeve 5 is a plunger 6, provided on its lower end with a capping tool 7, on two sides of which are shoulders 8 upon which rest the forks 9 of a hand-lever 10.
' The ends of the forks are pivotally connecthead, and also adapted for engagement with one or other of a series of notches 12 in the side of the standard 2. By removing the pin 11 the head can beadjusted upon the per end of the plunger.
standard, and heldat desired heights thereon. The distance of the capping devices from the basel can thus be made to conform to the size of the bottleswhich are being provided with caps.
The plunger 6 and tool 7- are held normally in elevated position by means of a spring 13 between the sleeve 5 and a pin in the up- The head 3 is also provided on its rear side with a plate 14., which may be fitted with fastening means, such as screws, so that the upper mechanism can be secured directly to a wall or other structure, and the supporting-base and standard dispensed with.
It will be observed that the pin 11 serves the double purpose of furnishing a supporting means for the head 3 and appurtenant parts, in connection with the notches 12, and also provides the pivotal connection for the lever 10. No other connecting member is used in the machine.
hat I claim and desire to secure, is:
A device of the class described,'comprisa suitably mounted standard, provided at its upper end with a series of n0tches;- a head slidable on said standard; a pin removably held in said head and adapted for engagement with said notches; capping mechanism carried by said head, and provided, on opposite sides with shoulders; and a bifurcated hand-lever pivotally connected with said pin and having a bearing on said shoulders.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature.
.cARL F. rnorrnow.
