To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD H. OARDALL, a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and the State of Utah, have invented a certain new and useful Posting- Tray and Record-Binder, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, constitutes a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a combined posting-tray and record binder designed primarily for use in connection with modern systems of mechanical book-keeping, and its principal objects are to provide an improved device which sha1l-:-

First: Be adaptable for use, either with the improved posting-box and file, for which I have made application for U. S. patent, filed April 9th, 1918;-Serial No. 227,558, or for use in connection with various existing types of posting holders;

Second: Facilitate the convenient ma nipulation of invoices, bills and other record sheets on which it is required to make entries from time to time;

Third: Securely and compactly hold the sheets when the device is used as a binder or file, while at the same time permitting ready access to the sheets for purposes of reference;

Fourth: Be a combined tray for posting and a binder for records, which may be con verted from the one use to theother, or back aga'in,by simply a movement of the operato'rs hand;

Fifth: Not render it necessary to prepare the sheets in any special manner, such as forming perforations or notches therein in order to make them engage some certain part of the binder;

Sixth: Be simple in construction and not liable to get out of order when used by the averagerun of office help;

Seventh: Occupy aminimum of valuable vault space; 7

Eighth: Be economical to the purchaser and which shall be durable and efficient when in use. I

In attaining these objects, a folding tray is provided, consisting essentially of two flat members or leaves hinged together along one edge thereof and adapted to be set at roper angles, with relation to each other,

according to the purpose for which the dev1ce isbeing used. The tray may be supported on a horizontal surface by any suitable means.

An adjustable member, which I choose to term the follower, is provided, which may be arranged to slide over one of the leaves and be adjustably clamped thereto, thus forming a space between the follower and the other leaf, into which space record sheets may be placed and be tightly held when the device is used as a binder for filing awaythe sheets.

The leaf, on which the follower is clamped, may be made extensible, so as to provide a larger capacity for the binder, while, at the same time, not occupying the maximum amount of space, unless it is actually required.

Small wheels or rollers may be provided, so that the device, withits contents, can be easily rolled over a fiat surface, which proves convenient when it is to be placed into limited compartments in the ordinary safe or vault.

The leaf against which the sheets rest, and a portion of the follower, may be made so as to open away from each other at the top, in order to allow a convenient amount of room in front of the particular sheet which iscbeing referred to.

The features on which protection is desired are collectively grouped in the appended claims. 7

I Referring to the drawings, 10 and-11 are leaf members pivoted to each other at 12. Member 11 has the extensible portion 13, on which may be slidably disposed an adjustable follower 14. The follower may be provided with an adjustable rest consisting in this instance of a plate 15, preferably of metal pivoted at 16 and having the coacting catches l7 and 18 (Fig. 3), which are pivoted to the plate 15, at 17 and 18*, and which are adapted to engage suitably placed indicated in Fig. 4c.

notches; for instance, 20 and 20" (Fig.'2) in the follower 14L. A pin 19 rigidly fastened in the catch 17 may engage a slot 38 formed in the catch 18. A1121 is a spring for holding the catches 17 and 18 in the normal position in engagement with the sides of follower 11, as shown by full'lines in Fig. 3. The dotted lines in Fig. 3 show the positions j of the catches 17 and 18 when they are disengaged. At 22 is a tie between the "sides of follower for the purpose of stiffening the same- In order to allow the follower let to be adjustably positioned, a guide strip 2 1 may be attached to the middle slat 13 of the extension 13, as shown in Fig. '3. Clips 25 may extend through slots in the bottom of follower 14: and may have their lower portions formed to grip the under side of guide 2 1. An eccentric clamp 26' may be pivoted in the clips'25 and be'adapted to draw these up to the guide 24', thereby forcing the I follower tightly against the guide 24:.

The leaf portion 10 may have pivoted thereto, at 27, the sidebars 28, which latter may have the notches 28", 28 and 28 and the projecting lug 29.1 bar 30 may connect :the' extension 13 to the leaf 11.

In using this device as a posting tray (Flg. 4), it-may be 'set into any ordinary holders such'as are 1n general use atthe present time,or if desired, anyother suitsupport'the able means may be employed to tray in a convenient pxosition similar to that s here shown, the side bars 28 play no, part, merely resting on the apex of the holder partition. In cases where this tray would be used with the improved posting-box and file already referred to, the

notch 28 would be used to engage the pin 31 in order to secure the proper angle between the leaves 10 and 11, as described in theapplication for patent mentioned.

In using this device as a" record, binder, (Figs. 1 and 2), the leaf 10 would ordinarily be in a position at right angles with the leaf 11' and would be heldin that position by the side bars 28,'the latter having'the notches:

with the follower 14: pressed closely up againstthe opposite face of the stack and clamped in position by the eccentric 26.

The stack of records 34 can now be divided into two suitable portions 34" and 3 1* and the various sheets fingered back and forth from one portion to the other until the required sheet is found and this can then be conveniently consulted, owing to the ample angular space between the two portions. As a binder, this device may have a very flexible capacity and maybe extended to any reasonable limit, as shown by the position of the movable parts 13 and 1 1 indicated by dotted lines in Figs. .1 and 2.

While a satisfactory embodiment of this invention is here shown. and described, all the detailed parts thereof are not necessarily in the preferred form.

' What I claim is: 1

1. In a posting-tray and record hinder, the combination of a leaf portion with a second leaf porton pivotally'- connected thereto, a follower movably mounted'on the second leaf portion and so arranged that record sheets may be confined between the said first leaf portion and the said follower; and

'members for rigidly holding the two leaf portions in variable positions with relation to each other.

In a posting-tray and record binder, the combination of a primary leaf portion having pivotally connected thereto a secondary leaf portion, a follower member movably mounted on the secondary leaf portion, the said follower member being attachablewhen the device is used as a file and detachable when the device is used as a posting tray, and arms fastened to the primary leaf portion, the said arms at the same time adjustably engaging the secondary leaf portion in such a'manner that the primary leaf portion may be moved in a direction away from the follower when the device is used as a record binder, and in a direction toward the secondary leaf portion when the device is used as a posting-tray.

3. In a device of the kind described,the combination of a primary leaf portion with a pivotally connected secondary leaf portion, a follower member adjustably mounted on the secondary leaf portion, the said follower member being attachable when the device is used as a file and detachable when the device 'is used as a posting tray, and

' tion, of a secondary means for holding the primary leaf portion in a position where it makes an angle of more than 90 degrees with the secondary leaf portion when the follower is attached-to the latter, and for holding the primary leaf portion in a position where it makes an angle of less than 90 degrees with the primary leaf portion when the follower is detached from the secondary leaf portion.

4. In a posting-tray and record binder adapted to confine certain contents, the combination of a primary leaf portion, a secondary leaf portion, flexibly connected thereto, an adjustable follower member slidably mounted on the secondary leaf portion, the said follower being attachable when the device is used as a binder and detachable when the device is used as a posting-tray, and adjustable arms for rigidly holding the said leaf portions, first, in a reference position with relation to each other when the said follower is attached, and, second, in a posting position with relation to each other when the said follower is detached.

5. In a posting-tray and record binder, the combination with a primary leaf porleaf portion pivotally connected thereto along adjacent edges thereof, an adjustable follower suitably mounted on one of the said leaf portions, and means for adjustably limiting the angular opening between the said leaf portions.

6. In a posting-tray and record binder, the combination with two suitably interhinged leaf portions, of a guide attached to one of the said leaf portions, a follower adjustably mounted on the said guide, a movable rest positioned on the said follower, means for adjusting the said movable rest and means for adjusting the angular opening between the said leaf portions.

In a posting-tray and record binder, the combination with two suitably interhinged leaf portions, of an extension member cooperatively disposed on one of the said leaf portions, a guide positioned on the said extension member, a follower adjustably mounted on the said guide, and means for adjusting the angular opening between the said leaf portions.

8. Ina posting-tray and record hinder, the combination with two suitably interhinged leaf portions, of an extension mem ber cooperatively disposed on one of the said leaf portions, a guide fixed on the said extension member, a movable follower adapted to engage the said guide and to be clamped thereto, a movable rest positioned on the said follower, means for holding the said movable rest in predetermined positions and means for adjusting the angular opening between the said leaf portions.
