To all cli/'wm t may concern Be it known that I, OBED C. BILLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, inthe county of Cuyahoga and State oi"- Ohio, have invented certain new and. useful improvements in Car-Coiqiliiigs, ot which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction et car couplers of the vertical plane or Master Car Builders type, the primary object of the invention being to provide a generally improved structure of this class which will not only be exceedingly simple in construction, but which will provide efficient means for locking the knuckle in closed position, for locking the knuckle locking` means in locked position to prevent accidental uncoupling, for maintaining the knuckle locking means in an unlocked position to permit a subsequent uncoupling movement of' the knuckle, and
for causing the knuckle to be rotated to either an uncoupled or open position or to coupledv or closed position through the instrumentality or" the knuckle locking means.
A further object is the provision ot' a coupler in which the stresses of bufling and draft shall be transmitted directly7 through the coupler-knuckle to the coupler-head, these parts being particularly designed and adapted to provide great strength and durability in actual service.
My improvements are eiiected by changes in the term and construction ofthe couplerhead, the knuckle, the knuckle locking and knuckle throwing members, and the relative arrangement and cooperation therebetween. There are other features of the invention residiii(r in elemental combinations and pai'- ticular construction of parts, all as will hereinafter moreliully appear.
lVith the above mentioned and other ends in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combinationA of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in some of its embodiments in the aecom-` panying out in the appended claims.

As a means of preventing the knuckle'Q, from being withdrawn from the coupler head l, in the event of the breakage oi"- the p`vot or knuckle pin 2b, and particularly of relieving the latter of pulling and bufling strains and stresses in service, the knuckle arm 2a, is provided with laterally extending hooked portion 2C, adapted to engage in a correspondingly formed recess l", in the coupler head.
Referring now to the improved knuckle actuating and locking mechanism to which this invention particularly relates, it will be seen that l provide an improved knuckle lock, in the present instance, in the specific form of a locking pin 3, vertically movable yte in suitable openings 1d, in the upper and lower walls of the coupler head, said locking member or pin 3, comprising a head or block 3a, affording a vertical shoulder 3b, arranged to engage the tip or tail of the knuckle arm 2, when the latter is in closed position, as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 3, of the drawings.
The improved knuckle actuating mechanism, in the present instance, comprises a knuckle actuator in the form of a double or two-armed member 4, in the present instance, arranged to swing horizontally in the coupler head 1, and pivotally mounted therein, preferably by means of a pivot pin 4, vsaid knuckle actuating member 4, being provided with an arm 4a, inovably connected to the arm 2, of the knuckle, as hereinafter described, and extending at one side of the locking pin, and a second arm 4", extending at the opposite side of the knuckle locking member or pin 3, said arms 4n and 4b, in the present instance, straddling the locking pin 3, and the arm 2a, of the knuckle. The arm 4b, preferably extends forwardly and is provided with beveled portions adapted to clear the tail or arm of the knuckle'in the opening and 'closing movements of the latter and prevent any disarrangement of the parts.
The arm 4a, extends at the rear of the knuckle arm 2a, as a knuckle opening mem ber, and as shown most clearly in Figs. 1, and 2, of the drawings, the arm 4a, extends into a recessed portion 21, terminating in a pocket 2e, so that when the member 4a, is operated by the mechanism hereinafter described, in the opening and closing movement of the knuckle locking and releasing device the knuckle willbe moved to its re* spective open and closed positions. If desired, the vertically lmovable knuckle lock orl pin 3, may be supported in its elevated position by means of a notch 3C, in the side of its stem portion adapted to be engaged by the adjacent portion 4d, of the arm 4, of the knuckle actuator member 4.
As a means of providing` a lock-to-thelock member, or in other words,-as a means for locking the lock or pin 3, in its closed position as against accidental release and l until released by the lock actuating mechanism, (see Fig. 4) and particularly as a means of affording a lock-set position when the .lock is raised to an open position (see Fig. 5), as well as means of manually opening the knuckle through the lock operating mechanism (see Figs. 2 and 6), or, if desired, when the knuckle lock is raised to a slightly further elevated position (or in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, of the drawings, of positively closing the knuckle with the closing movements of the lock, if
desired) the vertically movable knuckle lock or pin is provided with a knuckle actuator operating member or movable arm 5, in the present instance in the form of what may be termed a stem attachment pivotally connected to the stem portion 3d, of the locking pin 3, by means of a pivot pin 6, said actuating arm or member 5, being preferably provided with a second arm 5, forming, in the present instance, conj ointly with the arm 5, a bell-crank, said arm 5, extending in a substantially horizontal direction for the purposes hereinafter referred to.
As a means Vof actuating the arm or member 5, for the purpose hereinafter mentioned, the arm 5a, may be connected to a link lifter in the form of a link 7, leading to the arm 8a, of the rock or crank shaft S, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, of the drawings,-and in which instance the arm or member 5, may be positively moved in opposite directions to correspondingly move the knuckle actuating member 4, to correspondingly move the knuckle, or, if desired, the second arm 5a, may extend in an opposite direction as the arm 5d, into engagement with the lower wall of the coupler head, as shown most clearly in Figs. 6 and 7, ofthe drawings, and in which instance the locking pin is elevated independently of the members 5, 5aN and 5d, or in other words, the lock actuating mecha nism is not connected to the arm 5d.
It will be seen that the arm or element 5, is arrangedto operate in a recess 3", in the head or block 3, of the locking pin, and that the arm 5, extends between the arms of the member 4, so as to alternately engage such arms in throwing the same in the act of opening and closing the knuckle, and as a speciiic means of locking the lock or pin 3, in its closed position the upper end of the arm 5, is provided with a shoulder 5b, adapted to initially engage the upper wall of the coupler head when the member 5, is in repose, as shown most clearly in Figs. 4 and 7, of the drawings, and it will be apparent that upon the initial actuation of the arm 5a, through the medium of the rock shaft 8, and arm 8, and the link 7, that said shoulder 5b, will be initially moved out from under the wall of the coupler to clear the latter, the head 5C, coming into frictional engagement with the upper pin or lock opening of the coupler head, and the intermediate portion of the arm 5, coming into engagement with the inner or adjacent portion of the arm 4b, the arm 5, is thereby adapted to slidably pass upwardly therein and through the pin openings in the walls of the coupler head during J(he act of elevating the lock or pin 3.
It will be apparent that upon the elevation of the pin or lock 3, to the position shown in Fig. 5, of the drawings, and the fulcrum'portion 5h, coming in contact with the lower wall of the coupler head that a further movement imparted to the second arm 5a, by the lock actuating lever mechanism will move the arm 5, to the position Vshown in Figs. 2 and 6, of the drawings,
Vthat the intermediate portion of the member 5, will engage the arm 4a, returning the same to its original position, the engagement of the eXtreme or rounded end of such arm within the notched pocket 2e, causing the knuckle to return to the closed position shown in Figs. l, 3 and 4, of the drawings.
Then the arm 5, is moved to its extreme knuckle opening position, it will be seen that the recess 5e, will receive the edge of the upper wall of the coupler head, as shown in Fig. 6, and when tension is released Von the second arm 5, by the relaxation of the knuckle operating mechanism the lock or pin 3, and the arm or member 5, will be permitted to relax and be free to assume their original positions, so that when the knuckle reaches its closed position the pin will automatically drop in position.
ln the modied form shown in Figs. 6 and 7, of the drawings, the knuckle actuator operating member 5, and crank arm 5d, are actuated through the direct actuation of the lock or pin 3, from the top or" the latter, such actuating member 5, being actuated by means ot the curved arm 5d, coming in contact with the bottom of the coupler head, and hence as a means of initially moving the shoulder 5b, out of its lock-to-the-lock position, a vertically movable lock lifter member or detent 9, is mounted in an opening 3f, in the lock or pin 3, said lock lifter having a projection 9, engaging in a recess having an inclined shoulder of the member 5, just below the lock-set shoulder 5b, said lock lifter member being initially elevated through the medium o1 a clevis l0, having a cross pin ll, operating in an elongated slot 3g, in the top of the pin or lock 3, the first or initial movement of such clevis l0, and lifter 9, causing the projection 9, to move the arm 5, laterally sufficiently toenable the shoulder 5b, to clear the upper wall of the coupler head, it being obvious that upon the further movements of the lock or pin 3, either a lock-set position may be given to the locking` pin, as hereinafter described, or if desired the knuckle may be given its fully open position through the medium of the arm 5d, and the lateral movement of the member 5, in engagement with the arm 4b of the knuckle .actuating member, as hereinbefore described,y but in this form it will be apparent that no means are provided for manually closing the knuckle.
Referring now to the Clock-set feature of this invention it will be seen that a lock-set shoulder 3h, is provided at the lower side of the member 5, and the lower end of the arm or member 5, is provided with a slightly inclined slot l2, adapted to swing on the pivot pin 6.
In theform of the invention, shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, when the locking pin is moved from the position shown in Fig. 4, to a position slightly above that shown in Fig. 5, (the knuckle releasing position of the locking pin) the tension on the link 7, will cause the lower arm 5a, (or the arm 5, by the upward movement of the pin in the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7) to be moved laterally to the position shown in Fig. 5, (the slot l2 permitting of the movement) and thus carry the lock-set shoulder 3, in engagement with the lower wall of the coupler head, as indicated in Fig.
As the knuckle is moved to its open position, either manually through the locking pin or automatically when two connected couplers separate, the two-armed member 4, will swing on the pivot pin 4u and the arm 4, of the two-armed actuating member 4, coming in contact with the adjacent inner side of the arm 5, will carry the lock-set shoulder 3h, off of the lower wall of the coupler head, so that the knuckle locking pin will be supported on the rear side oi the two-armed member 4, by the pin supporting shoulder 3C, hereinbefore referred to, (or if desired the head or block 3a, of the pin may be supported on the hooked portion 2C, of the locking pin, as is common practice in couplers of this type) and it will thus be observed that when the knuckle is moved to its closed position the locking pin will automatically engage the tail of the knuckle, as hereinbefore referred to.
It will also be observed that when the knuckle is moved to its open position and the parts are in lock-set position, as shown in Fig. 5, the swinging of the knuckle and the two-armed member 4, will move the arm 5, to its extreme knuckle opening position and thereby carry the lock-set shoulder 3, to su'ch a position as to enable the lock-set y shoulder 3, to clear the lower wall of the coupler head, as shown in Fig. 6, so that automatic coupling will take place when the knuckle is moved to its closed position. From the foreging description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages ot my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described some of the embodiments otmy invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
l. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a
knuckle, a lock, aknuckle actuator, and bellcrank lock-to-the-lock means for moving the latter with the movements of said lock.
2. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle, a lock, a knuckle actuator, and lock-set lever means ymovable on said lock for moving the actuator with the movements of said lock.
3. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle, a lock, a horizontally swinging knuckle actuator, and a lock-to-the-lock and lock-set lever for actuating the latter with the movements of said lock.
4. Inga car coupling, a coupler head, a
knuckle, a knuckle lock, a lock lifter, a twoarmed actuating member, and a bell-crank member for actuating the latter with the movements of said lock lifter and lock, said bell-crank member being engaged and moved by said'lock-lifter relative to said lock )rior to the movement of the latter.
5. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle, a lock, a knuckle actuator, and a lock-to-the-lock and lock-set bell-crank for actuating the latter with the movements or' said lock.
6. Ina car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle, a knuckle lock, a knuckle actuating member, and a lock-to-'the-lock bell-crank member for actuating the latter through the movements of said lock.
7. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle, a knuckle lock, a knuckle actuator, and a relatively movable lock-to-the-lock and actuator actuating pivoted lever member carried by and movable with the movements of said lock.
8. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle, a knuckle lock, a horizontally swinging knuckle actuating member, and a pivoted lever member movable on and with said lock for actuating said knuckle actuating member.
9. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle, a knuckle lock, a lock lifter, a horizontal actuating member, and a vertical bell-crank member movable with said lock lifter and relatively to said lock for actuating said knuckle actuating member.
10. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle, a knuckle lock, a horizontal knuckle actuator, bell-crank, and a relatively `Inovable lock-to-the-lock and actuator operating bell-crank movable with the movements of said lock. j

In a car coupling, the combination of a coupler head, a knuckle, a knuckle lock, apivotally mounted two-armed knuckle actuator connected to and movable simultaneously with the knuckle on the opening and closing movements thereof, and lever means operatively connected to said knuckle actuator and movable with the opening and closing movements of said lock, said means comprising a lock-to-the-lock member adapted to initially unlock said lock and upon further movement to actuate said knuckle` actuator. In a car coupling, a coupler head1 a knuckle, a knuckle lock, a knuckle actuator, and a lock-to-the-lock and lock-set lever member movable on and relatively to said lock and operatively connected to said actuator and operating said actuator through kthe movements of said lever member after the latter is moved to its lock-set position.
17. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle, a knuckle lock, a knuckle actuator, and a lock-to-the-lock bell-crank movable on and relatively to said lock operatively oonnected to said actuator and operating said lock and actuator' through the movements of said bell-crank when the latter is moved above its lock-,setposition 18. In a car coupling, the combination with a vertically movable knuckle lock, and a substantially U-shaped horizontally swinging knuckle actuator straddling the knuckle lock; of a vertically swinging bell-crank pivoted on and movable vertically with said lock and having one arm in operative engagement with said knuckle actuator and normally forming a lock-to-the-lock and the other arranged to be actuated with the elevation of said lock.
19. In a car coupling, a coupler head, a
knuckle', a knuckle lock, lock actuating mechanism, a two-armed knuckle actuator, and a two-armed member movable relatively to said lock having one arm in engagement with said knuckle actuator and normally locking said lock in locked position, and the other extending outside of said coupler head for initially releasing said lock and simultaneously actuating the parts with the opening movement of said lock actuating mechanism.
20- In a car coupling, a coupler head, a knuckle1 a knuckle lock, a horizontal twoarmed knuckle actuator straddling said lock, lock actuating mechanism, and a two-armed member pivoted on and movable with said lock having one arm in engagement with said knuckle actuator forming a lock-to-thelock and the other extending outside of said coupler head for initially releasing said lock-to-the-lock and then simultaneously actuating the knuckle actuator with the opening movement of said lock actuating mechanism.
2l. In a car coupling, the combination with a coupler head, a vertically movable knuckle locking pin having relatively movable pin lift mechanism, and a substantially U-shaped horizontally swinging knuckle actuator straddling the knuckle locking pin; of a vertically swinging bell-crank pivoted at one side of said lock and having one arm in operative engagement with said knuckle actuator and normally forming a lock-tothe lock and adapted to be released by said pin lift mechanism and the other arm arranged to be actuated with the elevation or" said lock to move said bell-crank and knuckle actuator in cooperative relation to each other.
22. In a car coupling, the combination of a coupler head, a knuckle, a knuckle lock, a pivotally mounted two-armed knuckle actuator, and independent means operatively connected to said knuckle actuator and relatively movable on and with the movements of said lock, said means comprising a lockset portion adapted to slidably engage said coupler head when the lock is raised and a leck-to-the-lock member adapted to initially unlock said lock arm upon further movement to actuate said knuckle actuator and move said lock-set portion out of engagement with said coupler head.
23. In a car coupling, a. coupler head, a knuckle, a knuckle locking pin having a stem provided with a pin supporting shoulder, a two-armed stem attachment on said locking pin, and a two-armed horizontally movable knuckle actuating member straddling the locking pin, one oi said arms being in engagement with and adapted to swing with the knuckle and to engage said pin supporting shoulder when the knuckle is open,
and the other being'arranged to be engaged by the stem attachment when the latter is moved by the locking member whereby the knuckle is moved to its open position.

In a car coupling, a coupler heada a knuckle, a knuckle locking pin having a notched portion in its side, a two-armed pin attachment pivoted on said locking pin and forming a lock-to-the-lock and lock-set member, and a` two-armed horizontal knuckle actuating member, one of said arms being in engagement with and adapted to swing the knuckle, and the other being arranged to be engaged by the pin attachment when the latter is moved to lock releasing position whereby the knuckle is moved to its open position.

In a car coupling, the combination with a knuckle, a knuckle lock, and a knuckle actuator; of a two-armed knuckle actuator operating device pivotally mounted and adapted to be actuated simultaneously with the lock and to open and close said knuckle with the opening and closing movements of said lock, one ci said arms forming a lockto-the-lock and the other forming an operating lever for initially releasing said lockto-the-lock and for operating said knuckle actuator after said lock-to-the-lock is moved to its unlocked position.
In a car coupling, the combination with a vertically movable knuckle lock, and a horizontally swinging two-armed knuckle actuator straddling the knuckle lock; of a two-armed knuckle actuator operating member pivoted at one side of said lock, one of said arms being arranged at the side of the locking pin and between the arms of said knuckle actuator to operate the latter and the other being arranged to be operated by the lock actuating mechanism as said lock is operated.

A locking device for car couplers, comprising a knuckle lock, a relatively movable lock lifter, and a pivoted lock-to-thelock knuckle actuator moving lever member carried by and movable relatively to said knuckle lock and operatively connected to said lock litter to initially move and release said lock-to-the-lock knuckle actuator moving lever member independently of and prior to the initial movement of said knuckle lock.
48. A knuckle locking and actuating mechanism for car couplers, comprising a knuckle-lock, a two-armed knuckle actuator straddling the knuckle-lock, one of the arms being operatively connected to and adapted to swing the knuckle to its open and closed positions, a knuckle actuator moving lockto-the-lock lever member on said lock, and a movable lock-lift member connected to and adapted to initially release said lock-to-thelook lever member.
49. A knuckle locking and actuating mechanism for car couplers, comprising a knuckle-lock, a two-armed horizontally swinging knuckle actuator, one of the arms connecting and swinging the knuckle to its open and closed positions with like movements of said knuckle actuator, a knuckle actuator moving lock-to-the-lock lever memer movable relative to said lock and arranged to engage said knuckle actuator, and a lock-lift member movable relative to said lock adapted to initially release said lock-tothe-lock lever member.
50. A lock for car couplers, comprising a lock having a vertically movable lock litter, and a bell-crank member having one arm forming a lock-to-the-lock initially movable relatively to said lock and the other positively actuating said bell-crank when initially released, one of said arms being engaged and released by said lock lifter when the latter is relatively moved vertically prior to the initial elevation of said lock.
5l. A knuckle lock for car couplers, comprising a knuckle arm engaging block terminating in a depending stem portion, a lock-to-the-lock bell-crank pivotally mounted on and vertically movable with said stem portion, and a lock lift member initially movable relative to said block and initially Y engaging and releasing said bell-crank prior to the elevation of said block.
