CARL E. BROWN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
OIL-BURNER.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
Application filed October 29, 1919. Serial No. 334,108.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL E. BRowN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Oil-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a burner of that type in which a Ushaped generator is combined with a box-like body, and the invention aims to provide novel means whereby the generator may be rotated on an axis, and be held in adjusted positions, so that the flame proceeding from the combustion orifices, may be directed, at the will of an operator toward the water-front of a cook stove, or toward the oven thereof.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a casing 1, comprising a box-like body 2 surmounted by a lid 3 having an up standing flange 4L defining a pan in which ashes or asbestos may be placed, to receive a priming charge, the lid having a depending flange 5, which, coacting with the body 2, serves to hold the lid 3 in place on the body.
The lid 3 is provided with upstanding hoods 6, which preferably, extend entirely across the lid, the hoods communicating with the interior of the body 2. The hoods 6 are supplied with openings 7 which are elongated vertically, to a slight extent. The numeral 8 marks a U-shaped generator comprising an upper arm 9 and a lower arm 10, the lower arm 10 passing through the openings 7 in the hoods 6; The arm 10 of the generator 8 is equipped with combustion orifices 25, adapted tobe disposed within the hoods 6. Flame spreaders 11 of any desired sort are mounted on the arm 9 of the generator 8 and are disposed above the hoods 6.
An arched support 12 is attached to the lid 3 intermediate the ends thereof, the support having lateral extensions lei supplied with upwardly opening seats 15. The support 12 is provided with an intermediate seat 16. The numeral 17 denotes a supply pipe leading to the arm 9 of the generator 8, a valve 18 being interposed in the pipe 17.
The general operation or devices of the kind shown in this application is thoroughl understood, but it may be stated that if it is desired to have the combustion orifices 25 discharge vertically, then the arm 9 of the generator 8 is supported in the seat 16 of the part 12. It is possible, however to swing the generator 8 laterally, whereupon the upper arm 9 may be received in either of the seats 15. In this way, the combustion orifices 25 may be caused to discharge laterally, either toward the water-front of a cook stove, or toward the oven thereof. Since the openings 7 in the hoods 6 are elongated vertically, the generator 8 is permitted to have enough vertical play so that the upper arm 9 may be removed from the seat 16, before the generator is swung to cause the upper arm to ride into one of the seats 15.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 2-- A device of the class described comprising a casing, hoods on the casing and having vertically elongated openings; a U- shaped generator including a lower arm extended through the openings, and an upper arm disposed above the hoods, the lower arm being provided with combustion orifices located in the hoods; an arched support on the casing, the support being symmetrical with respect to a vertical plane and having seats located on opposite sides of said plane, the support being provided with an intermediate seat located between the side seats, the upper arm of the generator being received in the intermediate seat, and being movable to occupy either of the side seats, thereby effecting an axial rotation of the lower arm of the generator and causing the combustion orifices to discharge laterally in as my own I have hereto affixed my-sig'na opposite directions, the vertical elongation ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
of the openin s in the hoods permittin the. e 1 1 1 lower arm of the generator to rise, Wheii the 7' l CARL BROWVN' 5 upper arm of the generator is moved Out wl nesses:
of the intermediate seat. L. G. LATHAM,
Intestimony thatI claim the foregoing V J. H. WIRICK.
