PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH RICHARD, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
COMPCSITION PAINT FOR LEATHER.
\ To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH RICHARD, a British subject, patent-leather maker, residing at 7 30 Charlevoix street, in the city of Montreal,'in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composition Paint for Leather; and I do hereby declare that the .following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The present invention relates to -a composition paint for leather and its main object is to provide a paint which has filling and adhesive qualities whereby time and labor will be saved in tinting the skin, thus reducing considerably the cost of manufacture.
The paint is composed of crude linseed oil which serves as a filler, mixed with benzin and a certain portion of raw umber which serves as a size. To this is added a certain quantity of dry sugar of lead, which causes the composition to dry quickly when applied to the leather, to which is thoroughly mixed prepared paint which has been diluted beforehand in benzin.
The following is an approximate proportion of the different ingredients which enter into the present invention :-30 gallons of crude linseed oil, 30 gallons of benzin, 16 ounces of raw umber, 4 ounces of dry sugar of lead and 15 gallons of mixed paint diluted in benzin.
The first step in making this composit1on consists in boiling crude linseed oil,
raw umber and dry sugar of lead until it reaches approximately 600 Fahrenheit. It is then left to cool and comes into a thick paste which is dissolved with benzin until it is mixed with prepared paint preferably also mixed with benzin.
The method now used to tint leather Specification of Letters Patent.

consists in first putting a coat of filling.
composition which takes a few hours to dry, and then to provide the skin with 2 or 3 coatings of varnish which, of course, take considerable time to dry. Over this varnish 1 or 2 coats of mixed paint is put on the skin. This method, of course, takes considerable time and necessitates skilled labor in order that the different coats of varnish and paint are properly put on.
Applicants composition paint will eliminate all these operations, and will give similar results" to the old method and 1 or 2 coatings, at the most, as case may be, of this improved composition is sufficient. A' girl or ordinary laborer can do this without any difficulty. The paint is combined or rather has all the properties necessary to fill the grain of the skin, and adherent for the paint to hold down the leather.
The results obtained are absolutely identical to the results obtained with the old will readily be seen that considerable time and money will be saved in tinting the leather.
What I cla m as my invention is:
1. A composition paint of the character described comprising drying oil, a petroleum distillate, umber, sugar of lead, and mixed paint substantially as described.
2. A composition paint of the character described comprising, crude linseed oil, raw umber and dry sugar of lead mixed with benzin and prepared paint substantially as described. I
Signed at Montreal, Quebec, 18th day of August, 1919.
