SPEED OPERATED CIRCUIT CLOSER. APPLICATION FILED JULY'3,1919.- Patented July 6, 1920 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
INVENTOR A TTORNEYS UNI-TED STATE-SI PATENT OFFICE.
E EAR TOUCHY, oreanvns'roiv, Texas. f
To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, FRANK EARL TOUCHY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Galveston, in the county of (Jral-,
veston and 'State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Speed-Operated Circuit Closer, of which the following is a description. 1
My invention has reference to circuit closers and more particularly is intended for use in connection with an alarm on elevators for grain and other foodstuffs in which the belt not infrequently slips or the'elevator chokes owing to too much feed, loose buckets, or some obstruction in the head or boot of the elevator, causing the loss of time and sometimes producing very serious fires.
I have in'view to provide a circuit closer in connection with an alarm and controlled by a governor driven by the elevator belt, so that when the belt slips or stops from being choked or'obstructed the governor will act through the circuit closer to cause an alarm to be sounded.
in position on the wall B, there being shown A more specific object of the invention is to provide a circuit closer of the" indicated character that may be applied to a wall of any elevator. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my 7 provided in the present instance a flange 11 on the casing. secured by suitable fasteners 12 to the wall B. The casing, is equipped with suitable bearings 10 for shaft 13 on which is a drive wheel or pulley 1 1 that projects beyond the open side of the casing and beyond the wall B sufficiently to be fric tionally engaged by the elevator belt C and driven thereby. On the shaft 13 are the governing means controlling the alarm as SPEED-OPERATED omeu r-ctosna.
1 r Specification of Letters Patent. Patg ited J l 6 .1Q20 Application filed July 3, 1919.. Serial No. 308,898
follows: The hub 15 0f the governor is secured to shaft 13 by a set screw 15 or equivalent means and proj ecting' radially beyond said hub are arms 16 preferably in the form of stud bolts screwinginto hub 15. On said arms are loosely mounted rollers 17, the bolts having nuts 18 outside of I said rollers. The arrangement is such that when the device is being driven by the belt C centrifugal force will maintain rollers 17 in their outer positions but upon the stopping or slipping of the belt and the stopping of the drive wheel 14: or a material slowing down thereof, a roller 17 as it approaches the top position will gravitationally descend on the arm 16 to position indicated in dotted lines and will serve to sound an alarm. In the preferred embodiment of'my invention an electrical alarm is provided in the circuit of which is an arcuate resilient contact 19 suitably secured as at 20 at one end to the casing 10, and lying in the path of move- 7 ment of the rollers when in the inward position so that pressure of the roller in pass. .ing over contact 19 w1ll flex the same into engagement with the fixed contact 19 and close the electric circuit. closer the conductor wires 21 run to a suitablesignal 22, here shown as a known form of bell and there being included in the circuit any approved switch 23.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spiritiof the invention as deiinedfin the appended claims. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent? 1 r V 1. An attachment of the class described including a shaft, a friction pulley on'said shaft, and adapted to be driven byengage- From thecircuit 7 ment of a belt, radial arms on said shaft,
rollers loose on said arms to be maintained in an outer position under centrifugal force and adapted to gravitationally assume an inner position when an arm is at the top of the shaft and in the absence of centrifugal action, and a circuit closer controlled by a roller when in the inner position.
2. A circuit closer of the class described including a casing having means to secure the same in position, a shaft turning in said casing, a drive pulley on said shaft adapted to be driven by a belt when the device is in position, radial arms on said shaft, rollers loose on said arms to move radially thereon to an outer position under centrifue'al force or to gravitate radially inward When an arm is at the top of the shaft and in the absence of centrifugal force and fixed contacts mounted on the casing and including a resilient contact adjacent to the path of travel 10 of the rollers when in the inner position and curved in an arc struck approximately from the center of the shaft.
