Description

D. McRAE ROWING GEAR APPLICATION FILED FEB.17, isz'o.
WI TNESSES UNITED STATES DANIEL MGRAE, OF CENTRAL ISLIIP, NEW YORK.
ROWING-GEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1920.
Application filed February 1'7, 1920. Serial No. 359,424.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL MORAE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Central Islip, in the county of $ufiolk and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Rowing-Gear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
This invention relates to a rowing gear and more particularly to an improvement in an oar lock.
In the general construction of oar locks now in use, considerable friction is incurred by the oar when making the stroke or feathering, said friction resulting in wear on the oar and the inner face of the stirrup of the oar look.
It is therefore one of the principal objects of this invention to overcome the above recited objections by providing an oar lock with means which will greatly reduce the friction between the parts and minimize. wear on the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide an oar lock provided with simple and effective anti-friction means constituting a .part thereof.
With these and other objects in View which will be more readily apparent hereafter, reference is made to the following description, claims and accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which-- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the improved car look.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. at is a detailed sectional View taken on the line elt of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference which denote like parts throughout the several views thereof, 10 designates the stirrup of an car look, the free extremities of which constitute the horns 11. A bearing pin 12 is secured to the medial portion of the outer surface of the stirrup 10 for mounting the oar lock in the socket of the gunwale of a boat. The stirrup is preferably of hollow construction and the major portion of the inner face thereof is provided with a slot 13 which is rabbeted as at 14 to receive the positioning flanges 15 formed on the inner face of a cover member 16. The cover member is provided with a slot 17 having beveled faces 18, the restricted portionthereof being disposed outwardly as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Attaching screws 19 are passed through the extremities of the cover member and threadedly engaged with the stirrup adj acent the horns 11. The anti-friction members 20 are adapted to be arranged in the slotted portion 13 of the stirrup and the same are retained therein by the cover member which permits a portion of the anti-friction devices 20 to protrude from the slot 17. By this arrangement it will be understood that when an oar is arranged within the stirrup of the oar lock, the same will bear upon the anti-friction devices 20 whereby to minimize friction on the oar when making the stroke or feathering.
While there has been illustrated and described a single and preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that no limitation is made to the manner of associating the anti-friction devices with the stirrup of the oar lock nor any of the other details of construction, as alterations and modifications falling within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when found expedient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In an oar lock, the combination with the stirrup thereof, of anti-friction devices carried thereby andprotruding from the inner face thereof, said anti-friction members constituting a bearing surface for directly receiving an oar.
. 2. In an oar look a stirrup therefor having a groove formed in the inner face there of, anti-friction members arranged therein and means for retaining said anti-friction members in said groove, said anti-friction members constituting a bearing surface for directly receiving an oar.
3. An oar lock comprising a bearing pin,
a stirrup therefor having a groove formed DANIEL MoRAE.
