To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EnNns'r 0. HEAD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Rochester, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Uperating Devices for the Turrets o'li Machine-dbols, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to operating devices for the turrets of machine-tools.
1 It has heretofore been proposed to mount the turret of a machine-tool on a fixed pivot and to provide gearing for rotating the turrot-upon said pivot to bring the tools successively into operative relationship with the work, together with means for rigidly clamping and looking the turret in its adjusted position. It has also been proposed to provlde, between the clamping member and the turret a rectilinearly movable housing splinedon said pivot,said housing carrying'part ofthe gearing; for rotating the turret. The invention is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which is shown on theaccompanying drawing, but It is to be expressely understood that'the drawing is for purposes of illustration only and is not to be construed as a definition of the limits oi the invention, refer ence being had to the appended claims for that purpose.

Referring to the drawing, wherein the same characters of reference are used to designate corresponding parts in the several figures, the invention is shown-as applied to the turret of a vertical boring and turning mill, but it is to be expressly understood that this application of the invention is for the purposes of illustration only, as the invention is of equal utility when applied to the turrets of other types of maehinetools. The turret is shown at 1 and may be of any suitable construction, the details of the turret forming no part of the present invention. Said turret is rotatably mounted on a pivot 52 carried by any suitable form of slide 3, said pivot being fixed with respect to the slide-by any suitable means, as a pin or pins 4:. Also mounted 011 the pivot 2 is a sleeve 5 shown as provided at one end with a flange 6 rigidly connected to the turret 1, as by screws 7, and provided at its opposite end with a gear 8 shown as a bevel. gear.
Also mounted on the pivot 2, and shown as carried by a reduced and threaded extension 9 thereof, is a housing 10 generally eupshaped in formation and constituting" a' housin for the ear 8. Said housin 10 is non-rotatably mounted. on the pivot 2, any
suitable means being provided, as the key 11,
for preventing relative rotation of the pivot and housing. This housing is not attached in any way to the turret l, but may move rectilinearly, owing to the key 11, into and out of engagement with said turret.
ltotatablv mounted in the housing 10 is an arbor 152 with its axis preferably at an acute angle to the axis of the pivot 2,any suitable bearing, as shown at 13, being providedior said arbor. The inner end of this arbor carries a pinion lt in mesh with gear 8, and
the outer end of the arbor is provided with any suitable means for rotating the same, as the crank 15.
Any suitable clamping means for moving the housing 10 into clamping relation with the turret 1 may be provided. In the form shown, a nut 16 is rotatably mounted on the threaded extension 9 and provided with the operating handle 17, whereby, by rotation of said nut 16, said housing 10 may be advanced rectilinearly into clamping relation with the turret for securing the requisite rigidity of the turret when the tools carried thereby are in operation. A nut 18 may also be provided for limiting the backing ofl' movement of nut 16.
Suitable means are also provided for looking the turret in its adjusted position. To this end, the turret 1 is shown provided with a locking ring 19 having locking notches in number corresponding to the number of tools carried by the turret 1. Rectilinearly movable in the slide 3 is a locking bolt 20 which is designed to engage the notches in the ring 19 and rigidly retain the turret in adjusted position. Said bolt 20 is provided with suitable means, as the hand-lever 21, for disengaging the same from the notches in the ring 19 and it may be provided with a spring for normally urging the bolt into engagement with said notches as disclosed in the patent to Frederick F. Clarke, No. 1,188,042, granted June 20, 1916.
In operation, the hand-lever 21 is manip ulated to withdraw the locking bolt 20 from engagement with the notch in the locking ring 19 on the turret 1, and handle 17 is rotated to back the nut 16 off from clamping engagement with the housing 10. The turret may now be freely revolved on pivot 2 for bringing the desired tool into operative relation with the work. Such rotation is effected by turning the crank 15 which, through pinion 14 and gear 8, transmits the rotary movement to said turret. The turret having reached its proper position, locking bolt 20 is returned into engagement with the corresponding notch in ring 19 securely locking the turret in its adjusted position, and handle 17 is rotated to advance the nut 16 into engagement with the housing 10, which in turn slides on the pivot 2 to engage the turret 1, and rigidly clamp the same in position.
It will therefore be seen that, by the pro vision of the non-rotatable housing 10 and the pinion 14 carried thereby at an acute angle to the pivot and in mesh with the gear 8 rigidly connected with the turret, a rotating device for the same is provided which is simple in construction and particularly easy and convenient of manipulation. Also, by the combination of said turret-rotating device with the turret-locking and clamping devices employed, a turret-operating device comprising the minimum number of parts is provided and one that is inexpensive to manufacture and exceedingly simple, eflicient and certain in operation.
lVhile the illustrated embodiment has been described with considerable particularity, it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not to be restricted to the precise details shown on the drawing but that the invention is capable of embodiment in a variety of forms, some of which will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. Reference is therefore to be had to the claims hereto appended for a definition of the limits of the invention.
lVhat is claimed is 1. In combination, a turret, a pivot on which said turret is rotatably mounted, a gear rigidly connected with said turret, a housing nonrotatably mounted upon said pivot, a gear member carried by said housing and rotatable on an axis interseetin g the axis of said pivot at an acute angle, said gear member being in mesh with said gear, and means to rotate said gear member.,
2. In combination, a turret, a pivot on which said turret is rotatably mounted, a bevel gear rigidly connected with said turret, a housing non-rotatably mounted upon said pivot, an arbor rotatably mounted in said housing with its axis intersecting the axis of said pivot at an acute angle, a pinion on said arbor in mesh with said bevel gear, and means to rotate said arbor.
3. In combination, a turret, a pivot on which said turret is rotatably mounted, a gear rigidly connected with said turret, a housing non-rotatably mounted upon said pivot, an arbor in said housing laterally disposed to said pivot and having its axis intersecting the axis of said pivot at an acute angle, a gear member on said arbor in mesh with said gear, and means to rotate said arbor.
4. In combination, a turret, a pivot on which said turret is rotatably mounted, a gear rigidly connected with said turret, a housing splined to said. pivot, clamping means carried by said pivot for moving said housing into clamping relation with said turret, a gear member in mesh with said gear and mounted in said housing on an axis intersecting the axis of: said pivot at an acute angle, and means to rotate said gear member.
5. In combination, a turret, a pivot for said turret provided with a screw-threaded extension, a gear rigidly connected with said turret, a housing splined to said pivot, a clamping nut carried by said screwthreaded extension for moving said housing into clamping relation with said turret, means for rotating said nut, a gear member in mesh with said gear and mounted in. said housing on an axis intersecting the axis of said pivot at an acute angle, and means to rotate said gear member.
6. In combination a turret, a pivot on which said turret is rotatably mounted, a gear rigidly connected With said turret, a
housing non-rotatably mounted on said pivot, a gear member in mesh With said gear and mounted in said housing on an axis inspecification.
