BENCH SCREW.

UNITED STATES HUGO REISIGER, OF ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS.
BENCH-SCREW.
Application filed August 14, 1919.
I?) all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO Rnrsrenn, a
subject of the Kingdom of Netherlands, residing at Rotterdam, Netherlands, have invented certain Bench-Screws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to abench-screw or vise, and more particularly to improved means by which the movable jaw can be quickly brought into operative relation with the fixed jaw and locked against retractivo movement and by means of which the movable jaw is automatically released when the work is disengaged, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a pair of clutches pivotallymounted on one of the jaws and l a depending member carried by the other jaw and adapted to be engaged by said clutches in such a manner that the movable jaw is not only prevented from moving backward but is forced into closer contact with the fixed jaw or with the work between the jaws, the organization being such that the vise is capable of accommodating work of considerable length.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a vise constructed in accordance with the present invention and having a piece of work gripped between its jaws;
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the mechanism for holding the jaws in a work-engaging relation;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the fixed aw and the operating parts carried thereby, taken approximately on the line AB of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the vise.
Similar characters of reference designate the same parts in the different figures of the drawings.
The vise, in the preferred form herein illustrated, comprises a fixed jaw 1 provided with a lower bed or plate having means, such as perforated ears 1 for securing it to a bench or other suitable support, and a movable jaw 2 provided with an extension or bed 2*, which beds are slidable one Specification of Letters Patent.

against the other. In the lower bed or extension of the jaw l are formed a pair of longitudinally extending recesses or grooves, in which are located for sliding movement a pair of rods 3, each of which is provided at one end thereof with an open-ended recess that is adapted to straddle a cross member or trestle 4 that is slidable relatively to the extension or bed of thefixed jaw 1.
' The opposite ends of the rod 3 are in conta ctwith a member herein shown as a nut 5, having a threaded opening therethrough adapted to receive a screw 6, which rotates in bearings in the walls of the jaw 1, one end of the screw passing to the exterior of the jaw 1 and provided with a head 7 having an opening therethrough' adapted to re ceive a handle or lever for rotating the screw. The opposite end ofthe screw is swiveled in the end wall 8 of the extension or bed of the jaw 1. It will thus be seen that by rotating the screw 6 the nut 5 may be moved forward or backward.
As herein shown, the cross member or trestle 4c is of approximately U-shape formation, having right-angular portions at its ends, each provided with an opening through which passes a bolt 10. A pair of clutches 11 are mounted on the extension or bed of the jaw 1 by means of a pivot 12, which passes up through an opening in the bed. The clutches 11 are provided each with an elongated slot 9 adapted to receive the bolt 10 which passes through the angular extension of the cross member 4 for permitting adjustment of the clutches as the cross member slides on the lower bed, the bolts 10 being retained in position by means of washers and nuts, as shown in Fig. 4;. The clutches 11 are provided at the ends opposite their pivotal connection with the cross member, each with a cam formed head 13, the end of which is somewhat rounded or curved, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The extension or bed of the movable jaw 2 is provided at its'under face with a longitudinally depending portion 14 which is adapted to slide between the heads 13 of the clutches 11. As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the-under surface of the bed of the movable jaw 2 is approximately T-shaped in cross-section, and the lower bed is-provided with a pair of longitudinally extending upstanding portions 15 shaped to conform to the depending side portions of the T so as to form a guide therefore and permit the said bed of the jaw 2 to be slid on the bed of the jaw 1, while the stem of the T forms the depending portion 14: adapted to slide between the clutches. This depending portion 14, as indicated in Fig. 2, extends only the length of the bed of the jaw 2, and does not continue into the space below the overhanging portion of the jaw, so that the jaws when brought together to clamp a piece of work between them have :a clear space for permitting long pieces of work to be held between the jaws, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be clear from the foregoing description. When out of operation, the heads 13 of the clutches 11 are normally sufficiently far apart to permit the depending portion let of the upper bed to slide freely between them. Whenitis desired to clamp a piece of work between the jaws, the work is placed in position and the jaw 2 slid onthe bed of the jaw 1 untilthe work is engaged between the jaws. Thereupon the operator rotates the screw 6 by means of the handle 7 in the proper direction, as, for instance, to the left, to cause the nuts 5 to exert pressure on the end of the rod 3, which in turn cause the cross member 4 to slide and thereby swing the clutches 11 on their pivots 12 and cause the cam heads '13 to firmly engage the de pending member 14: of the slidable jaw. It will thus be seen that, because of the pivotal action of the clutches and their cam formation, that upon turning the screw 6' somewhat further the heads 13 of the clutches will forcethe jaw 2 into firm engagement with the work.
From the foregoing it will be seen that l. have provided an improved constructimi of vise by means of which the jaws can be brought gradually into firm engagement with the work, so as to avoid injury thereto, and at the same time it is impossible for the work to slide away while being operated on.
This construction has the advantage that, while holding the piece of work with one hand, the operator can slide the movable jaw easily against it with the other hand and thereafter, by a slight rotation of the screw 6, cause the clutches to firmly engage the depending member 14; and not only prethat I do not thereby limit my invention to the precise features of construction shown,
as I I am aware that many mechanical changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention asset forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what i I claim is: I
' 1. A vise, comprising a fixed jaw' and a movable jaw, a pair of pivotally mounted clutches carried by one of said jaws, a depending member carr'ied by the other o said jaws in position to be gripped by said clutches when the jaws are brought into work-engaging relation, and means for operating said. clutches, and including a cross member slidable with relation to the jaws and pivotally connected to said clutches, and a pair of rods slid-able relatively to the jaws and in operative engagement with said cross member.
2. A vise, eomprising a pair of jaws, one fixed and the other slidable relatively thereto, a cross member slidably carried by said fixed jaw, a pair of rods slida'bly carried by fixed jaw in operative engagement with sai member, a pair of clutches pivotall carried by said fixed jaw and pivotaily connected to said cross member, a depending member carried by said slidable jaw and adapted to slide between said clutches, and
