Description

yUNITED STATES PATENT orsics.
COMPANY, 0F READVILLE, BOSTGN, NEW JERSEY.
Application filed March 18,
To all whom t nay concern: 1,
Be it known that I, HECTOR LE DOUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Readville, Boston, in the county of Suffolk,r State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sel vage-Forming Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention has relation to a class of devices designed for employment in Alooms and intended to secure straight, uniform, and perfect selvages upon the cloth woven therein. These devices have for their special function to act during the weaving opera tions to prevent the return bends of weft or filling ,at the opposite seivages of the cloth from drawing in the marginal warp thread or threads in such manner as to render the edges of the cloth irregular.
The invention consists in devices of the said class of the novel and improved construction and combination which I willnow proceed to describe, and which is particularly pointed out in the claims at the close of this specification.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying 4drawings in which latter;-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a loomtemple of usual construction having my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3-is a vrear'elevation thereof.
Fig. 4 is a detail view.-
Having reference to the drawings,
a represents the slide-bar of the temple,
b the i temple-stand adaptedlto be fixed upon the by contact of the loom-frame and having front and rear guides c and d in which the said slide-bar is mounted with capacity to slideendwise, as usual; e is the spring by which the slidebar and its roller-head f are kept normallyl in their rearward position and are returned to such position after-being pushed forward 'advancing lay with lug g extending down from roller-head f; and la, Fig. 3, -is one oi the bur rolls within the roller-head f. The illustrated temple is one furnished with two bur rolls. At z' isl the cover or top of the rear guided.
It is to be understood that in practice devices of the nature to be described herepafler are employed at each selvage of the c ot Specification of Letters Patent.
MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPGR.
SELVAGE-FORMIJG DEVICE.
Patented J une 22, 920. 1920. serial No. 366,814.
Referring now more particularly to the selvage forming device, 1 is a verticallyswinging arm, pivoted at its forward end to an opstanding support 3 rising from the slide-bar a and located forward of the rear guide d, said arm having at its rear end a downturned tapering point l occupying, when said arm is lowered, a position closely adjacent the outer end of the bur roll L, at a slight distance tothe rear of the clothmaking line or fell. 'If desired, this position may be just outside of and closely adjacent to the selvage warpe, in such relation to said warps that the weft-thread or filling will be bent aroundthe point 1a as the shuttle renters the shed. Vith such arrangement, the inward pull of the weft yarn, ordinarily taking effect upon the selvage warps and tending to make the selvage irregular, is borne by the point 1a so that the selvage warps are freed entirely therefrom. If preferred, the point may be adjusted to enter between the warp threads at the selvage, with substantially the same results.
The construction of the'swingingarm 1, and the mode of mounting the same, may vary in practice.
the support 3 upon the slide-bar a has fixed construction and adjustment, the arm 1. is made in two parts, namely the main portion which is formed with the point l, and the bearing member 5 which has a socket within which the forward end of said main portion is secured by a clamping screw 6, the said member 5 being mountedV upony pivot 4. The said main portion may be adjusted longitudinally relative to said socket-member to givethe downturned point 1*'a working position at the desired distance rearward of the sur-face of the bur roll h, and it may be adjusted by turning it within the socket so as to shift the downturned point 1a laterally inward or outward. vThis turning of the arm within the socket, for the lateral adjustment of the point, is provided for by making the socket circular in cross-section, and either making portion 1 oithe arm of round stock, or forming it with a rounded end-portion adapted to t into the said pocket.
The socket-member 5 extends rearwardly from its pivot 4 over the cover or top i of the rear guide d `for the temple-bar (1 and interengagement between said socket-mem- In the present insta-nca,
Wi j
ber and said cover or top is utilized for the purpose of swinging the arm l upward as the movable part' o' the temple is driven forward by the pressure of the lay against the lug g of the roller-head. In the illus- .trated construction the socket-member 5 is formed with a downwardly and rearwardly extending finger 5a, adapted to bear upon the said cover or top. This linger is formed with a cam-shaped portion 5b, which, when 'the movable part of the temple' is rearward,
drops at the rear of the cover or top z', but when the movable part `oi the temple is driven forward. by the lay the said camshaped portion 5b rides up onto the top of the said cover or top, thereby raising the arno., and withdrawing the point l from the loop of weft or illing formed around it and the adjacent warpthread or threads.
To facilitate this action, the cover or top c' is formed with an incline i', which enables the camshaped portion 5b to ride up onto said cover or top more easily.
A' vertical channel or'groove y is formed "in the rear face of the roller-head to accoi'nniedate the point l, so that it will not be truck bv the reed carried by the lay, or damagec or displaced by accidental con tact with the shuttle. The inner wall of said groove may be utilized to lend lateral support to the swingingarm l to resist the inward pull of the weft thereon. T he width of the channel. or groove is suiiicient to permit the point to be adjusted laterally as deecrihed above. .j m
Gravity alone may be depended upon to keep the arm and pointdown in the normal vforking position occupied by them in the drawings, and to return them thereto after having been raised, or a spring ic may be employed to aid gravity in so doing.
What is claimed as the invention is,
1. The combination with a roller temple comprising a. spring-actuated slide-bar and roller-head adapted to be moved forward by the lay in beating-up, and a temple-stand having a covered rear guide for the slidebar, of a vertically swinging arm having a pivotal mounting in connection with the slide-bar at a point forward of the said guide, and a downturned point at its rear end working at the rearface of the templehead, said arm raised by engagement with the cover or top of the said guide in the forward movement of the slide-bar and temple-head so as to disengage the point from the threads of the fabric being woven.
2. The combination lwith a roller temple having its head channeled vertically adjacent the outer end of the bur roll, of a selvageprotector arm receiving a vertical movement in the reciproeations of the temple-head and having an acting point which wor/ks in the channel alongside the outer end ofthe adjacent temple-roll.
3. The combination with a spring-actuated slide-bar and roller-head adapted to be moved forward by the lay in beatingup,
In testimony whereof I ailix m signature.
HECTOR L *j DOUX.
