Be it known that I, AN ONY SoHRonDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs for Metal Barrels and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in a bung for barrels and is particularly adapted for use in conjunction with metal barrels. The particular object of the invention is to apply a bung to the barrel in such a manner as to prevent leakage thereof. With all types of bungs with which I am familiar the bung is so applied to the barrel that if the same is loosened suiiiciently to allow the same to rotate leakage occurs and it is to prevent this that the invention hereinafter described is designed.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following specification and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts of reference throughout the various views, Figure 1 is a section of the plug used to close the opening; Fig. 2 is a similar view of. the bung as it appears before insertion into the metal of the barrel; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the wall of the barrel as it appears after the first forming operation and ready to receive the bung shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4c shows the bung secured in position in the barrel and Fig. 5 is a view showing all the parts in assembled position.
The bung may be placed in the head of the barrel or in the bilge thereof and consists of a head portion 1 having a reduced extension 2, these two-portions being connected by a tapered shoulder 3. The bung is suitably drilled and tapped at 4: to permit of closing by means of' a plug 5 screwed therein. The bung is secured in position by having the material of which the barrel is made drawn or folded to form an outwardly presented tapered seat 6 which corresponds to the shoulder 3. L This seat extends outwardly, or to that side of the material which forms the outside ofthe barrel, to a cylindrical extension 7 which has an inside diameter equal to the diameter of the portion 1 and allows the bung to be readily inserted Specification of Letters Patent.

in place until the parts 3 and 6 engage each other. After the two parts have been assembled in this position they are inserted in a suitable press and that portion of the, extension 7 which extends above the portion 1 of the'bung is turned downwardly or at right angles to itself to effectively seal the bung'in place, as indicated at 8. During this same pressing operation the double thickness of material which forms the tapered seat 6 is firmly pressed together as shown in Fig. 4c and ordinarily is sufiicient to retain the bun in a very tight and positive manner. lowever should the bung tend to work loose within the material of which the barrel is formed, sufficient to per mit the same to rotate, leakage is prevented by application of a suitable gasket 10 placed upon the upper face of the portion 1 and securely clamped in place'by the enlarged circular head 11 of the plug 5. Thus it will be seen that should the plug work loose as before described no fluid can pass outwardly, due to the presence of the gasket hereinbefore mentioned.
It will be obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the constructionberein shown and despribed and T do not wish to limit myself further than is required by the state of the art or that which comes within the scope of the appended claims. I

1. A bung for metal barrels, comprising a head having a reduced extension, and a tapered shoulder connecting said extension with said head, in combination with a metal barrel having an opening therein and a tapered seat around said opening and an extension outwardly beyond said seat, the shoulder of the bung fitting against the seat around the opening and the extension being "bent inwardly over the head of the bung to hold the same in place. 1
