Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it-mag concern:

Be it known that I, ALLAN J. BnA'roN, a citizen of the United )States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor or Ceiling Plates, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to floor or ceiling plates, among the objects of the invention being the provision of a device of this kind which can be inexpensively and easily made and which possesses the-requisite strength.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification I have shown in detail a form of embodiment of the invention which to enable those skilled in the art to practise the same will be set forth fully in the following description. I am not restricted to this disclosure; I may depart therefrom in several respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claim following said description. .Referring to said drawings:

Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of a floor or ceiling plate involving the invention and showing the same open.

Fig. 2 is an edge view of the section, shown on the right in F ig. 1.

Fig. 3 is an elevation as seen from the out side of the front end portion of the other section.

Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.

The device may be employed in various ways although as will be inferred from thetitle, it generally fits against a floor or ceiling, and is intendedto surround a pipe passing through such a floor or ceiling. It COlIl-' respective strips edgewise engaging the parts 2 and 3. These strips 6 and 7 between their ends have outward bows S, and at opposite sides of their bows they fit substantially against the respective flanges 4 and are held thereto as by lugs or cars 9 integral with the said flanges 4 and bent over the upper edge portions of the sen1i-circular strips to hold. the latter solidly against the respective flanges.

The strips 6 are furnished at their rear ends with off-sets 10 fitted flatwise against each other and pivoted together as by a rivet 11 so that the sections 2 and 3 can be opened and closed practically in the manner shown in Letters Patent No. 1,185,580 granted to me May 30, 1916 and to which reference may be had. 'As a matter of fact the present device is a striking improvement of that shown in the patent.

The forward end portion of the semi-circular strip 6 shown on the left or that associated with the member 2 is provided with a. lateral hook 12, to engage a catch portion 13 on the companion strip 7 when the plate is closed practically after the fashion shown in the Letters Patent identified.

The flanges 4 are slotted to receive the legs or branches of bowed springs 14 the free ends of which engage against the pipe around which the plate fits, the heads or outer portions of the two bowed springs 14 being disposed within the bows 8. Obviously the lugs 9 by which the'strips 7 are held in place constitute one of the important features of the invention, the other being naturally the bows 8 which receive the head p'ortions of the springs 14. While the flanges 4 desirably are furnished with lugs 9 this may not alwaysbe necessary.

What I claim is: p

A floor or ceiling plate comprising two segmental body members cofiperative to form a ring, each of the body members having a flange along its inner edge, approximately semi-circular strips fitted edgewise against the body member and engaging the flanges, the latter having integral ears bent over the semi-circular strips to hold the same in place and said semi-circular strips being hinged together, the strips being outwardly bowed between their ends the lugs being situated at opposite sides of the respective bowed portions, and bowed springs the bowed portions of which are situated within the other hows, the legs of the bowed springs extending through slots in the flanges.
