and securely held in shape upon the device and whereby the tie may be very quickly and easily engaged upon a collar. I

An important and more specific object is the provision of a shield member disposed against the back of a tie and having a forwardly extending loop through which the tie body extends, this loop being covered by fabric, and the shield having associated therewith a pair of spring arms cooperat-v mg with the ends of the shield to constitute grips engageable with a collar for holding the tie in position. I

Another object is the provision of a device of this character in which the shield carries at its ends rubber pads which cooperate with the spring arms for forming very efficient grips so that slipping of the device when in position upon a collar will be positively prevented.

An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be very simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described andclaimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a tie having my invention thereon,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a tie body of the bow type and B designates my device as a whole. 7 form the device B as a shield member 10 formed of a strip of metal or other suitable material, of arcuate shape. Formed on the side edges of this shield member are forwardly extending ears 11 upon which are engaged flanges 12 formed on the edges of a loop member 13. The shield member 10 is preferably provided with a longitudinally extending rib 14 for the purpose ofincreasing the stiffness thereof.

Engaged upon the ends of the shield member 10 are metallic sleeves 15, each of which is surrounded by a rubber sleeve .16 and the ends of the metallic sleeve are bent outwardly and crimp'ed upon the ends of the rubber sleeves and pressed tightly. By this construction it will be seen that the rubber sleeve extends outwardly beyond the 'crimped ends of the metallic sleeve.

A pintle 17 extends through the ears 11 on the shield member 10 and pivotally engaged upon this .pintle are oppositely extending spring arms 18 which are formed as loops and which have their ends angularly inclined, as shown at 19, forv convenient engagement by the operators fingers. The arms 18 are both formed from a single length of wire which is coiled about the pintle 17, as clearly shown, and the natural resilience of these arms urges them toward the grips formed by the rubber sleeves 16.

In the formation of the tie, the fabric thereof is properly folded in the usual manner and is inserted within the loop 13. The ends 19 of the arms 18 .are sewed on the rear of the tie A, as shown at 20. A strip of fabric 21 is disposed over the loop 13 and is secured as by stitching. When the tie is thus made up it will have the same appearancefrom the front as any other bow tie and the rear appearance will be as shown in spring arm 18 away from the shield member,

after which this end of the shield member is inserted between the outer and inner portions of a turn-down collar. The outer side is of course inserted in the same way.

When the operator releases pressure upon' In carrying out my invention I the spring arm, it will be seen that the spring arm will firmly engage against the outside of the collar while the rubber grip at each end of the shield member will engage against the inner face of the outer portion of the collar. This clamping elfect will se curely hold the tie in proper position without danger of displacement.

From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided an extremely simple and eliicient device which performs the double air-pose of serving as a form for holding-a tie in proper shape and serving for retaining the tie in position upon a collar.

lVhile I have shown and described the preferned embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

1. A device of the character described comprising a shield member,a forwardly extending loop on said shield member at the center thereof, said loop being adapted to have disposed therethrough folded fabric forming a bow tie and said loop being adapted to be covered with fabric extending transversely of the loop portion of the tie, and a pair of oppositely extending spring arms pivotally connected with said shield member and secured to the rear side of the tie body.

A device of the character described comprising a tie body, a shield membe a run; ate in shape connected with the tie body, resilient pads-on the ends of said shield member engageable between the inner and outer portions of a turn-down collar, and a pair of spring arms pivotally connected with said shield member, secured to the rear side of the tie body and adapted to clampingly engage the outer face of a collar.

In combination with a tie body of bow form, a shield member formed as an arcuate plate disposed at the rear side of the tie body, a forwardly extending loop of rigid material carried by said shield member at its center and encircling the renter of the tie body beneath the central strip of the tie body, and a pair of spring arms pivoted upon said shield member within said loop and securml to the rear fare of the tie body.
