This invention relates to that class of slicmg machines in which a knife or cutter blade has a reciprocating movement in actual use, an example of which forms the subject matter of my prior application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 2' 76,i73, filed February 12th 1917. To provide a sin'iple and eifieient means for feeding the material to be sliced with the attainment of uniform regularity in the thickness of the slices produced and in which the feeding mechanismis adapted to be moved down and out of'the way, when it is desired to oleanthe machine parts, all as willhereinafter more fully appear.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the material supporting bed plate or base of the machine, provided with the usual fined side abutmentqplate or 'wall 2.
3 designates a guide standard secured to one s de of the base 1 1n transversely removed relation to the aforesaid abutment wall2, and preferably of the detail construction set forth in my prior application Serial No. 276,473, and formed with a guide slot or trackway 4 in inclined relation to the horizontal plane of the base 1, with said guide slot comprising an upper and outer angular portion 5 having a greater inclination from a horizontal plane than the lower and'inner angular portion 6 of said guide slot, as shown in Fig. 1.
7 designates a transversely arranged cut ter carriage of an elongated bar form, pro vided at one end with a cross-head or stud 8 having sliding engagement with the guide slot or trackway 4L aforesaid. At its other end the carriage 7 is pivotally connected to the upper end of a radius link 9 which is formed with an elongated slot 10 having operative engagement with the driving mechanism of the machine, as follows: I 11 designates the primary power shaft of the machine, journaled longitudinally in bearings at the side of. the abutment plate or wall 2, and preferably receiving motion through a pair of bevel gears 12 from a transverse countershaft 13 capable of convenient manual rotation.
14: designates a secondary power shaft arranged in parallel relation to the primary shaft 11 and receiving slower speed therefrom through a gear wheel and pinion connection 15 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
16 designates a crank disk secured to the secondary shaft 14, and having a crank pin engaging the elongated slot 10 of the radius link 9, and adapted to impart a downward oblique movement to the cutter carriage 7 in actual use, and as set forth in detail in my prior application Serial No. 276,473.
17 designates the cutter blade or knife of the machine, of a straight blade form, and
having a guide flange 18 at its back for sliding engagement in a correspondingly formed guide channel in the carriage 7 aforesaid. In the present improvement the cutter blade 17 has a rapid and short stroke reciprocation in the carriage 7 With a view to attain rapid and effective cutting action and to such end has operative connections as follows:
19 designates a sliding head or standard moving in transverse guides 20 on the base 1 in adjacent relation to the aforesaid guide standard 3 and provided with a vertical guide channel for engagement with a pin or stud 21 on the side of the cutter blade 17 to form an operative connection be tween the parts which permits of an inde pendent vertical movement of the pin or stud 21 in said guide channel in the practical operation of the machine.
22 designates a lever pivoted to the base 1, with one end operatively connected to the sliding head 19 aforesaid, and with the other end connected by a connecting rod 23 with an operating cam mechanism as follows:

2'7 designates an adjustable gage board secured to the base 1 and adapted to maintain the article being sliced in proper position against the side abutment plate or wall 2.
28 designates one or more serrated feed wheels extending up through and a short distance above the top surface of the base 1, through suitable slots therein, and adapted for feeding engagement with the under surface of the material being sliced.
29 designates a carriage or frame hinged at one end to the under side of the base 1 and provided with ournal bearings for the carrying shaft 30 of the feed wheel 28 aforesaid.
31 designates a spring associated with the carriage 29 and adapted to yieldingly force the same upward and maintain the feed wheel 28 in proper operative position.
32 designates a cam or eccentric mounted on the underside of the base 1 and having engagement with the free end of the carriage 25), and a daptcd to move said carriage downwardly when it is desired to depress the feed wheel 28 below the top' surface of the base 1 previous to a cleaning operation on the machine parts. -And to such end the carrying shaft of the eccentric 32 is provided with an operating knob or handle 33 for convenient manual operation.
34 designates a ratchet wheel fixed on the carrying shaft 30 of the feed wheel 28, and 35 designates a rock arm associated with said shaft and carrying a spring dog or pawl 36 adapted for operative engagement with the ratchet wheel 34 aforesaid.
37 designates an inclined lug formation on the rock arm 35 and l cated in the path of a corresponding inclined lug formation 38 on the radius link 9 heretofore described and so that as said radius link 9 nears its vertical position the lug 38 will contact with the h1g3? to swing the rock arm in one .trackway, a cutter direction and cause the dog or pawl 36 to engage the ratchet wheel 34 and impart a partial rotation to the same and to the feed wheel 28. Such operation takes place as the radius link 9 nears its vertical position and with the cutter blade 17 in a correspondingly elevated condition to permit a free passage of the material thereunder.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is:-
1. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base, a cutter carriage arranged transversely of said base, means for imparting oblique movement to said carriage, a cutter blade mounted for reciprocation in said carriage, and means for imparting reciprocation to said cutter blade, substantially as set forth.
2. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base, a cutter carriage arranged transversely of said base, means .for imparting oblique movement to said carriage, a cutter blade mounted for reciprocation in said car riage,and means moving in unison with the operating means of said carriage for imparting reciprocation to said cutter blade substantially as set forth.
3. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base, a cutter carriage formed with a guideway, means for imparting oblique movement to said carriage, a cutter blade formed for sliding engagement in the guideway of said carriage, and means for imparting reciprocation to said cutter blade, substantially as set forth.
.4. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base, a cutter carriage formed with a guideway, means for imparting oblique movement to said carriage, a cutter blade formed for sliding engagement in the guideway of said carriage, and means moving in unison with the operating means of said carriage for imparting reciprocation to said cutter blade, substantially as set forth.
5. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base provided with an angular-1y arranged guide plate at one side, a guide standard secured in spaced relation to said guide plate and provided with an oblique trackway, a cutter carriage having guiding engagement at one end with said trackway, a radius link pivotally connected at one end to said carriage and at the otherend to said base, means for imparting movement to said radius link, a cutter blade mounted for reciprocation in said carriage, and means for imparting reciprocation to said cutter blade, substantially as set forth.
6. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base provided with an angularly arranged guide plate at one side, a guide standard secured in spaced relation to said guide plate and provided with an oblique carriage having gulding engagement at one end with said trackway, a radius link pivotally connected at one end to said carriage and at the other end to said base, means for imparting movement to said radius link, a cutter blade mounted for reciprocation in said carriage, and moving in unison with the operating means of said a carriage for imparting reciprocation to said cutter blade, substantially as set forth.
'7. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base, a cutter carriage arranged transstantially as set forth.
8. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base, a cutter carriage arranged transversely of said base, means for 1mpart1ng oblique movement to said carriage, a cutter blade mounted for reciprocation in said carriage, and means for imparting reciprocation to said cutter blade, the same comprising a revoluble shaft carrying a cam disk formed with a sinuous cam groove, an intermediate connecting rod engaging said cam groove, a rock lever engaging said rod, a guide carriage engaging said rock lever and formed with a vertical guideway engaging one end of the aforesaid cutter blade, substantially as set forth.
9. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base provided with an angularly arranged guide plate at one side, a guide standard secured in spaced relation to said guide plate and trackway, a cutter carriage having guiding engagement at one end with said trackway, a radius link pivotally connected at one end to said carriage and at the other end to said base, means for imparting movement to said radius link, a cutter blade mounted for reciprocation in said carriage, and means for imparting reciprocation to said cutter blade, the same comprising a revoluble shaft carrying a cam disk formed with a sinuous cam groove, and intermediate operative connections between said cam groove, and the like cutter blade, substantially as set forth.
10. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base provided with an angularly arranged guide plate at one side, a guide standard secured in spaced relation to said guide plate and provided with an oblique trackway, a cutter carriage having guiding engagement at one end with said trackway, a
radius link pivotally connected at one end to said carriage and at the other end to said base, means for imparting movement to said provided with an oblique radius link, a cutter blade mounted for reciprocation in said carriage, and means for imparting reciprocation to said cutter blade, the same comprising a revolubleshaft carrying a cam disk formed with a sinuous cam groove, an intermediate connecting rod engaging said cam groove, :1 rock lever engaging said rod, a guide carriage engaging said rock lever and formed with a vertical guideway engaging one end of the aforesaid cutterblade, substantially as set forth.
11. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base provided with an angularly arranged guide plate at one side, a guide standard secured in spaced relation to said guide plate and provided with an oblique trackway, a cutter carriage having guiding engagement at one end with said trackway, a radius link pivotally connected at one end to said carriage and at the other end to said base, a revoluble shaft, a crank disk secured to said shaft and operatively connected to the aforesaid radius link, a cutter blade slidingly mounted in the aforesaid carriage, a second revoluble shaft geared to the aforesaid revoluble shaft and carrying a cam disk formed with a cam groove of a sinuous form, and intermediate operative connections between said cam groove and the cutter blade aforesaid, substantially as set forth.
12. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base provided with an angularly arranged guide plate at one side, a guide standard secured in spaced relation to said guide plate and provided with an oblique trackway, a cutter carriage having guiding engagement at one end with said trackway, a radius link pivotally connected at one end to said carriage and at the other end to said base, a revoluble shaft, a crank disk secured I to said shaft and operatively connected to the aforesaid radius link, a cutter blade slidingly mounted in the aforesaid carriage, a second revoluble shaft geared to the aforesaid revoluble shaft and carrying a cam disk formed with a cam groove of a sinuous form, an intermediate connecting rod engaging said cam groove, a rock lever engaging said rod, a guide carriage engaging said rock lever and formed with a vertical guideway engaging one end of the aforesaid cutter blade,'substantially as set forth.
13. In a slicing machine, the combination of a base, a cutter carriage arranged transversely of said base, means for imparting oblique movement to said carriage, the same comprising a radius link pivoted to one end of said carriage and a revoluble shaft carrying a crank disk operatively connected to said radius link, a feed wheel projecting through a slot in the main base and having a carrying shaft, and a step by step operating means connecting said link with said carrying shaft, substantially as set forth.

In a slicing machine, the combination of a base, a cutter carriage arranged transversely of said base, means for imparting oblique movement to said carriage, the same comprising a radius link pivoted to one end of said carriage and a revoluble shaft carrying a crank disk operatively connected to said radius link, feed heel projecting through a slot in the main base and having a carrying shaft, and a step by step operating means connecting said link with said carrying shaft, and comprising an inclined lug on the radius link, a rock arm provided with a companion inclined lug, a ratchet dog carried by said rock arm, and a ratchet wheel carried by the shaft of the feed wheel, substantially as set forth.
15. 111 a slicing machine, the combination of a base, a cutter carriage arranged transversely of said base, means for imparting oblique movement to said carriage, the same comprising a radius link pivoted to one endofsaidcarriage and a revoluble shaft carrying a crank disk operatively connected to said radius link, a feed Wheel projecting through a slot in the main base and having a carrying shaft, and a step by step operating; means connecting said link with said carrying shaft, a carriage hinged to the under side of the baseand having bearings for said carrying shaft, a spring moving said carriage in one direction and an eccentric adapted to move said carriage in the oppositedirection, substantially as set forth,
