Be it known that I, RAYMOND G. FIEGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Oilers, of which the following .is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in an oiling device which will be automatic in action and has for its object to provide one which will be so constructed as to permit of different quantities of oil being fed to the various operating parts of an automobile and other types of machinery, and for regulating the feed of oil according to its con.- sistency, whether light, medium or heavy.
Further and more limited objects of the invention are in the provision of means for retaining a reserve supply of oil, means for permitting the movement of the machinery to cause the oil to be fed in regular quantities. to the operating parts and the provision of a device which will be simple and ellicient in operation, cheap of manufacture and very durable.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and novel arrangement of parts described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referrlng to the drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts of reference throughout the various views, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device constructed in accordance with the principles above set forth; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section as indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a perforated disk or strainer plate which constitutes the adjustable feed.
The invention comprises a cup 1 provided with a bottom 2 and closed at its top by a cover 3 which is preferably secured upon the cup by being threaded thereon. Vithin the upper part of the cup is secured an inverted cone shaped disk 4 which is provided with a plurality of perforations 5. This disk is secured within the cup by pointed 8 which are engaged at their upper ends by the inner face of the cover 3 when said cover is 1n ts lowermost or closed position and are provided to prevent the disk from becoming arred out of position. At its apex the disk has secured to it a cap 9 which is open at the bottom and closed at the top, and said cap is provided in its top with three perforations, 11, 12 and 13, which are graduated in slze and which may each be registered with the opening 10 in the top of the cap 9, by turning said disk relative to said cap. The cap 9 fits snugly over the top of a feed pipe 15 which projects through the bottom 2 of the reservoir and which is secured thereto at 16 in any convenient manner. The projecting end of said feed pipe is threaded at 17 whereby the device may be applied to the desired part of the machinery.
In operation the cup or reservoir is filled with lubricating fluid by removing the cover 3 and by lifting the disk 4 upwardly. For easy removal of the disk a handle 18 which is in the form of a rivet and which is also used to pivotally secure the cap 9 to the disk, may be used. Before the disk is replaced the proper adjustment for the feed of the oil is obtained by rotating the cap 9 upon the disk until the proper opening of the disk registers with the opening 10 of the cap. The disk is then dropped in place and is securely held therein by the fingers 6 and 8. Oil is then fed to the operating parts of the machine due to the fact that the machine being in motion agitates the oil sufiiciently to cause it to splash upwardly through the perforations 5 and to gravitate in sufficient quantities to the center of the disk, from which it is fed drop by drop through the proper opening, in this case shown at 13, which is the largest of the three, through the feed pipe 15 and to the working parts of the machine. It will thus be seen that an automatic means is provided whereby oil may be fed in an economical, effective and positive manner to the machine, and one whereby the feed may be adjusted accordingly as the viscosity of the 011 requires by registerlng either a:
