- FLUE SUPPORT. APPLICATION' FILED MAR. I, |918.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
l ELITE-SUPPORT.
. lApplication led March l1, 1918. Serial No. 219,811.- J
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES D. REYIIoLDs, a citizen of the United States, residingv at Gretna, in the county State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Flue-Support, of which/the following is a specification.
vThe subject ofthe flue support intended for supporting flues in tobacco curing houses and for like purposes.
or houses are built and provided with suitable fire boxes froml which the flues lead. These flues-are constructed of sections of stove piping and extend through the curing house slightly/above the floor thereof. These flues,y after passing through the. house, are conducted through suitable openings in the Side of the house so th bustion may be discharged without the house and be dissipated in the atmosphere.
Where a number of curing houses are erected it is customary, to save the cost of equipping each separate house with a flue or flues, to move the flues from house to house as occasion demands. As these flues are rather long, and slant upwardly from the floor to the opening through which they are conducted to the outer air, it becomes necessary to prop 'or support the flues by some means and, 1n the majority of cases, a wooden prop is resorted to often causing loss through fire.
The invention contemplates providing a prop which may be adjusted to meet the different conditions of different curing houses.
The invention also contemplates providing means for locking the flue sections together at the point of support, thus preventing the flue from sloping to each side of the support and probably pulling apart.
A further object of the invention is the production of a simple, durable and efficient in the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
-of Pittsylvania and present invention is a- For the purpose of curing tobacco, sheds at thegases of com' invention resides in the com-- f 'A practlcal embodiment of the invention 1s shown in the accompanying drawing,-
wherein: -y l Figure l Isa vlew in side elevation of a 'Support constructedvinv accordance with the lnve'ntion, a fragment of a flue being shown;
Fig. 1s a'vlew partly in elevation and partlylin. sectlon on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referrmg to the drawing by numerals of reference lIn carrying out the invention there is prov1ded a base or foot l from which rises the tubular supporting member 2 having an aperture 2"in its wall to permit the end of a pawl 3 to enter the tubular member 2. While the pawl may be of any suitable formation, 1t Ishereln shown as consisting of a bent resilient strip which is secured to the outer surface of the member 2 by a screw 4 or otherwise.
A rod 6 is slidablewithin the tube 2 and has formed longitudinally thereof 'a rack having teeth 5 vwhich are adapted to be engaged by the pawl 3 so that the rod may be adjusted to various positions with respect t0 themember 2 thus to shorten or lengthen the support.
The rod 6 merges into a head formed with oppositely extending arcuate arms 7 whlch are adapted to support and partially encircle the flue. Opposed pins 8 extend through apertures formed. in the arms 7 and are adapted to pierce the metal of the flue 9 at that portion of the flue where sections' telescope. These pins 8 may be secured to the arms 7 in any desired manner but are here shown as forming the ends of screws 8 which are threaded into the arms 7 and which may be threaded in or out to project ythe pins inwardly to pierce the flue or draw them outwardly to release the flue from the support.
Also, it will be noted particularly ofwFig. 2 that the pins 8 are smaller than the screws 8 and by reason of the screws 8', the tapered pins may be forced under great pressure to penetrate the overlapping or telescopic ends of the pipes so as to pierce or penetrate the same and not merely to indent thev pipes. In addition, shoulders are formed facing inwardly at lthe juncture of the pins and screws, sov as to seal the openin s around the pins. t is thought that the operation of the device will be thoroughly and fully underratentea Junei, 192e.
` out a 4of uniform diameter engaged stood from the -foregoing description withspecial and detailed explanation thereof.` i
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is Y 1. In a flue support, an arcuate pipe receiving portion providing oppositely branch- 'ing arms and formed with a downwardly eX- tending standard suitably supported from a'floor, one of said arms being provided with a threaded opening therethrough and said arms at said supporting portion being designed to receive telescopic end portions of two interlitting pipes forming a flue, a screw in ysaid threaded opening and formed with an abruptly reduced inner portion forming a' pin having its inner end sharply tapered to pierce the overlapping portions of the pipe upon the screw' being turned inwardly so as to hold said pipe sections against turning or separation, or longitudinal movement one with respect to the other, the aperture around the pin, constituting the reduced portions of the screws, being closed by the adto their free ends and having abruptly re.
duced pins tapered at their inner ends adapt-- ed to penetrate said overlapping portions and inwardly facing shoulders formed at the juncture of the screws and pins adaptedto seal the openings around the pins in the overlapping portions of the pipe sections through which the pins pass, said pipe sections being thereby held against separation or turning. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the resence of two witnesses.
