To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Ariel-11E 1*. Lovn and JOHN Nroonn'rrr, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Press-Guards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. 7
Our present invention relates to punch presses and similar intermittently operated machines in which there is danger of injury to the hands of the workman, due to the placing and removal of work under the operating parts of the machine. It has for its object to provide an automatic guard for ejecting the hand of the operator from the danger zone before the machine functions, and a further object is to provide a guard which will prevent the operator from reaching around behind the ejecting guard or guards thereby taking a chance of injuring his hand. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification. J

In the drawing we have shown a press equipped with a'double wingguardsuch as is shown in Patent No. 1,17 8,168 to Mac- Donald and Dougherty, April 4, 1916,; although our improvement applies equally well to otherwforms 0t guards wherein, the hand of the operator is ejected to'one side before the press operates. The press shown in the drawings comprises a frame'l, mounted on abase or table 2, at the bottom of which a foot lever 3 is fulcrumed at 1. fly wheel 5 and shaft (5, upon which it freely turns. This clutch 7 is operated at the will of theworkman by depressing toot lever which actuates clutch 7 through a connecting rod 10. In the press illustrated the ram 8 is attached to the shaft '6 by a crank 9, so that each revolution of the wheel 5 will reciprocate the ram once. In this type of machine each depression of foot lever 3 causes the clutch 7 to key the wheel 5 to the shaft 6 for one revolution. 'The work 11 is placed on a bed 12, so that the ram 8 carrying the necessary tool performs its operation in a single stroke. In order to protect the operators hands from injury by the ram 8 when he fails to move quickly enough to avoid the stroke of the ram, or when the clutch slips or breaks, or the foot lever is accidentally displaced, guards have been designed to eject the operators hand from the danger zone before the machine functions.
We will briefly describe the guards illustrated in the drawings, with which our improved guard cohperates. Brackets 29 are fastened to the frame 1 of the press by bolts 13, forming bearings for a yoke'l, which is connected to the brackets by pins 15, so that the yoke may be easily removed, or, by removing one of the pins" 15 may be swung about the other pin so that the parts hereinafter described are accessible. The yoke 15 has a bushing in which a shaft 16 is mounted. On and revolving freely about shaft 16 there is a member 1'7 which carries an arm 18 to which is ailixed a guard wing 19. V Thisguard is preferably made of trans parent celluloid so that the work can be seen when the guard is in front of it, but other material such wire mesh may be used. To operate this guard the foot leverv 3 is depressed." This lowers lever 24 through rod 26, causing the long arm 21 otibell crankley'er 21 to move down through the pull exerted by links lie 1 22 and 23. This thrusts link 20 to the left, thereby swinging member 17 about shaft 16 causing the guard wing 19 to move from the position shown in full lines to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. Rod 10 is adjusted so that clutch 7 will not operate until the guard has completed over a half of its stroke, thereby insuring the ejecting of the operators hand in case the ram is accidentally functioned.
Directly behind the guard wing 19 there is a. second wing 30 of similar shape and size. This is operated through the. same path as guard 30, butis actuated by the ram 8 instead of by foot treadle 3. The reason for this second guard is that if the clutch should break the ram might operate with out having the foot lever 3 depressed. lVith this second guard the ram 8 would operate the guard 30 as hereinafter described preventing an accident to the operatorsv hand. Gruard 30 is mounted on an arm 31 attached to a segment 32 revoluble about shaft 16.
This segment 32 has a cam slot in which a roller (not shown) carrled by ram 8 moves,
so that the guard 30 is moved across the front of the bed 12 thereby knocking the operators hand to one side when the first guard. fails to work.
It has been found in practice that the above described mechanism is insuiiicient to prevent injury, since a workman will sometimes reach around the guards from the side to adjust the work after the guard has .moved to the position shown in dotted lines Fig. 1 and before the ram has descended, thereby frequently being injured. To prevent this', and to further add to the safetyof'the operator we provide an additional swinging guard 40, attached to an arm 41 which is mounted on astub shaft 42 fastened into the yoke 15 see detail Fig. 5. The
' guard or wing 40 is. preferably made of transparent materialsuch as celluloid. On
the arm bearing 43 there is a lug 44 adapted to engage a stop 45 on the yoke 15,so that the guard cannot be rotated toward the work farther than shown in fulllinesFig.

will readily appear that an operator, seeing that his work needs adjusting after the guard is operated and before theram had descended, cannot quickly reach around the guard and takea chance of fixing the work before the ram functions. ',Moreover, if his dotted lines Fig.3 thereby disengaging the spring from the slot 49 and slide guard arm 41 off the stub shaft 42. Reverse the operation toreplace.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we provide a simple guard which will prevent many of the accidents now re sulting from careless operators. It is simple to construct, durable and efficient in use. We do not wish to limit the use of our side arm guard to a double wing press guard such as is herein described for it will be obvious that it is equally well adapted for use with a single wing guard or any guard which operates in front of the press and ejects the operators hand to one side of the machine.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a machine having an intermittently operating mechanism mounted on a frame. the combination of a safety guard pivoted to the frame adapted to swing across a portion of the frame, to prevent access to the intermittently operating mechanism during the time that it is operating, with a second guard pivoted to the frameadapted to be swung relative to the frame allowing egress but not ingress, protecting. another portion of the frame from that covered by the first mentioned guard. V
2; In combination with a'machine having exposed intermittently operating mechanism mounted on a frame, a movable guardcarried by the frame connected with the intermittently operated mechanism so as to operate in timed'relation thereto, crossing the frontof said intermittently operating parts and returning at each cycle of movement, and a second guard normally stationary, adapted to prevent access to the mechanism from a side of the 'machine, said second guard cooperating with. said first guard when an operators hand is ejected from beneath the perating parts of the first guard; I I

41. In a safety device for punch presses the combination of a punch press consisting of a frame, bed, a ram movable in the frame, with safety guards, one adapted to move in timed relation to the ram and the other normally stationary, the second mentioned guard adapted to swing away from the bed, only when under the impulse of a force directed away from the movable guard.
5. In a safety device for punch presses the combination of a punch press consisting of a frame, a bed, a ram, operating mecha nism for moving the ram in the frame, with guards to protect the limbs of an opendor, the guards comprising wings one of which is connected to operate in timed. relation to the ram protecting a portion of the bed across which work is placed upon the bed, the other wing independent of the operating mechanism and adapted to protect another portion of the bed.
6. In a safety device for punch presses the combination of a punch press consisting of a frame, a bed, a ram movable in the frame, and mechanism for moving the ram, with safety guards, two guards attached to the mechanism which moves the ram so as to function in timed relation thereto, the said guards protecting a portion of the bed, and a third guard independent of the ram operating mechanism to protect a portion of the bed not protected by the first two guards.
7. In combination, a machine having an exposed operating mechanism, a guard pivoted on the machine to swing from one side across the front thereof and a second normally stationary guard mounted on the side of the machine and pivoted to swing in the direction that the first mentioned guard moves as it swings into operative position.
8. In a safety'device for machines having intermittently operated parts mounted on a frame, the combination of a safety guard operated through the intermittently operat ing parts to protect a front portion of the frame during the time in which the machine functions, with a supplementary safety guard hingedly connected to the frame to prevent access to the moving mechanism from the side, there being a stop on the guard limiting its movement in one direction.
9. In a safety device for punch presses, the combination of a punch press comprising a frame, a lug on, the frame, a bed, a ram movable over the bed, with safety guards, one swinging intermittently under the impulse of the ram moving mechanism and the other movable in one direction under the impulse of a force exerted by the first mentioned guard, there being a stop on the second guard cooperating with a lug on the frame to prevent the movement of the second guard toward the first guard from its normal stationary position.
