To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Ennns'r DUsOHER, a citizen of the United States residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and useful improvement in'Filling-In Attachments for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in attachments for printing machines for automatically inserting, removing and packing successively, supplementary type forms such as are used in printing salutations on duplicated letters and in printing addresses on envelops. My invention further relates to the automatic regulation of the ribbon during the changing of said forms and to the adjustability of the parts and also to the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
My device is simple in construction and accurate in operation. The particular form shown is specially adapted to but not-necessarily confined to use in connection with the printing machine described in my companion applications No. 652,105 filed Qleptemher 30. 1911, and NO. 660,5!25 filed November 15 1911.

In the above drawings 1 have shown a printing machine having a supporting frame A, a type bed B carried by said frame on which a type form C may be supported and with which one or more traveling platens in the form of an impression roller 1) cooperate to make printing impressions. My filling in type block E is shown mounted on the type bed B in the type form and carrying a supplementary type form on a filling in type holder or name plate F which is so positioned by the filling in type block E as to cooperate with the platen D in the same manner as the form 0 on the bed B. On the frame A are mounted sprocket wheels 2 carrying sprocket chain belts 3 at each side of the machine on which are mounted the platens D-D, each of said platens being in the form of a roller having a body @l which traverses the type form and a wear wheel 5 at each end from which printing pressure is imparted to the body of the platen. The type bed B is so positioned with relation to the path of the platen D carried by the sprocket wheels 2 and chain belts 3 that the platen (or platens) normally travels orbitally about the type bed and above the surface of the form out of contact with the type.
Printing pressure on each platen is secured by means of pressure bars 6 at each side of the machine under pressure from the springs '7 which may be adjusted to different degrees of pressure. The under surface of the pressure bar is formed with rectangular notches 8 which bear upon the periphery of the wear wheels 5 producing an intermittent pressure and repeated impacts on the platens and thereby on the form. A tabulating rail 9 is shown at each side of the machine on which travels the wear wheel 5, the construc tion of this rail and its function being de scribed in patent granted to myself and lVilliam A. Sorg on November 12, 1912. for printing machine Number 194:4,097. These tabulating rails 9 cooperate with the pressure bars 6 in guiding the platen rollers DD evenly in height over the type bed and main and supplementary type forms on the bed. An inking ribbon 11 is mounted on the machine between the path of the platens and the type form and is carried over suitable rollers 12 connected by gears 14; with the sprockets 2 to operate in any suitable manner simultaneously with them. One of said gears 15 is keyed to the driveshaft 16 on which the sprockets at one end of the machine are mounted. An electric motor 17 mounted on the frame of the machine is shown connected by stepped pulleys 18 and 19, belt 20, counter shaft 21 and worm gearing 22 to the shaft 16 for the purpose of operating platen D, ribbon 11, automatic feeding mechanism for the filling in type holders F, packing mechanism G for said type holders and paper stacking mechanism H which will be hereinafter described.
My filling in type block E consists of a body part 25 of comparatively narrow width and extending transversely across the type bed and substantially parallel with the line of motion of the platens D. The body 25 rests directly on the type bed B on which it is so calculated in height as to bring a portion of its surface 26 to such an elevation that standard type 27 in the filling in type holder F have equal elevation with the type commonly used in the form C on the bed B. The type block is adapted to be built into the type form C in such manner as to lock the block in said form.
The surface portion 26 of the block, receiving the plates or holders F which carry type to print the names and post oilices of addressees and sometimes salutations, extends less than the width of the type bed B and on either side of said surface portion 26, the body 25 is cut down from the surface so that the type in the form F when resting on the cut away or reduced portions of the body 25 do not have contact with the ribbon 11 during the passage of each of the platens. The sides of the body 25 are formed with grooves 28 extending the full length thereof for the engagement of the type holder F or name plate which is formed with inturned lugs 29 (see Fig. 1) adapted to travel in the grooves 28 during the longitudinal movement of the holder F along the bloch. The lugs 29 extend down the sides of the block and freely into the grooves 28 allowing the type 27 carried by the iilling'in type holder to rest upon the surface portion 26 when said holder reaches that part of the block. A spring 30 is fixed on one side of the block E by means of a screw 31 and has contact tips 32 and adapted to lie between the lugs 29 on one side of the type holder when said holder is in printing position on the surface portion 26. The spring tips 32 and 33 are beveled so as to permit forced movement of the type holder in the direction of. the arrow indicated in Fig. 6 but tending to prevent free movement of the type holder when positioned in the main type form on the bed of the machine to print with its type resting upon the surface portion 26 of the filling in block. The movement of the type holder is thus retarded and for the purpose of printing it is firmly held on the block but it may be advanced by the succeeding filling in type holder and moved off of the block in the same direction following its movement onto the block.
The extension 35 (see Fig. 23) having substantially the same width as the block E is connected with and supported by the block by means of screws 36 (see Fig. l) and extends beyond the bed of the machine permitting the holder F to be pushed beyond the block and from under the inking ribbon. The extension 35 carries a hopper d0 into which. the type holders are deposited and down the floor 41 of which they slide into the slide or trough 42 which is hingedly carried by the packer mechanism G to be hereinafter described.
Movement of the filling in type holders 13 along the block is accomplished by means of a pusher 4:5 which slides in the slot as in the approach portion 4-7, said approach being secured to the body 25 of the block by means of screws 18. The pusher d5 slides on a rod 49 which is mounted longitudinally below the surface of the block and a spiral compression spring 50 mounted on the rod 429 in front of the pusher is compressed by said pusher during its forward movement in advancing a type holder. Upon the release of said pusher said spring returns it automatically to its original starting position. In order to secure the engagement of the end of the type holder F by the pusher an over-hanging lip 51 is formed on the forward end of the pusher which engages over the edge of the type holder and prevents disengagement between the pusher and holder when the holder is being advanced. A resilient bumper made of rubber or any other suitable material 52 is secured to the stop 53 on the lower surface of the approach against which bumper the push piece impinges each time it returns into normal position thus reducing thejar.
The pusher 45 is adapted to be operated automatically by means of a dog 55 which is adj ustably secured by means of a set screw 56 on the shaft 57 said shaft being carried by the chain belts 3 and traveling with the belts. Said dog 55 is adapted each revolu tion of the belts to turn down into vertical position and engage a shoulder 58 on an end of the pusher to move the pusher forward until the plate in its path is adjusted in printing position upon the filling block whereupon said dog is automatically released out of engagement with the pusher allowing said pusher to escape into normal position. The adjustment of the dog 55 on the shaft 5'7 by means of a set screw 56 is such as to cause the dog 55 to move transversely into the path of the pusher according to the transverse position of filling in block E in the main type form and on the type bed of themachine. The shaft 57 is angular in cross section so that the dog 55 cannot turn thereon and said shaft is held normally from turning with the dog in clined back out of the path of the shoulder 58 on the pusher by means of a coil spring 59, the ends of which are secured respectively to said shaft and one of the chains so as to turn the shaft in its journals 60 by which said shaft is secured to said chains. The turning movement of the shaft 57 is limited by a pin 61 on the shaft and a stop 62 carried by one of the journals 60. To turn the shaft 5'? for the purpose of engaging the shoulder 58 by means of the dog 55, a trip lever 63 is mounted upon one end of the shaft 57 and a shoulder 6% is formed on one side of the frame of the machine in the path of the free end of said lever. As the belts 3 travel forward in the direction of the arrows indicated in Fig. 2 the trip lever 63 impinges against the shoulder 6d causing the dog to turn from full into broken line position illustrated in Fig. 23 to engage the pusher and carry it forward until the type holder which it in turn moves assumes printing position upon the block, whereupon the spring 59 returns the shaft 57 thus releasing the dog out of engagement with the pusher. The shoulder Gel is proportioned in length to release the lever and accomplish this result. The shaft 57 also carries paper strippers 64 which are adjustable longitudinally thereon and adapted to engage and remove the material which has been printed from the ribbon 11 after each printing impression. The tilting of the paper strippers by the shaft 57 does not effect the function of their removing the naterial printed upon from the machine. A shoulder 65 (see Fig. 5) extending longitudinally on one side of the frame of the machine immediately below the shoulder 64: is adapted to act as a supporting slide for the inner end of the lever 63 while its outer end is being pressed down by the shoulder 64:. Sagging of the belt is thus prevented and perfect ope 'atiou of the tripping lever is thereby assured.
The outer extremity of the approach 4:? is provided with a depending hook 66 passing over the shaft 67 on which the front pair of sprocket wheels is mounted said hook being adapted to rest on said shaft to support the outer extremity of said approach and being separable therefrom. The approach is formed with upwardly projecting sides 68 which extend over the forward end of the approach and assist in guiding the type holders longitudinally on to the block. The ends of these sides have inwardly bent springs 69 secured thereto and serving to hold the forward end of each type holder down to guide the lugs 29 thereof into the longitudinal grooves 28 of the block. The siding 68 is cut away at 70 at the end of the approach permitting the dog 55 passing freely into engagement with the shoulder 58 on the pusher.
- To prevent interference of the type holders F by the ribbon 11 during their advancement on the block E, the ribbon is automatically held out of contact with the filling in form on the holder F by means of a spring 71 positioned longitudinally on the block E near the side of the ribbon adjacent to the block approach. This spring stands above the level of the type in the holder and normally keeps the ribbon raised out of contact therewith. It is however a comparatively weak spring permitting the impression roller or rollers to spring the ribbon into contact with the type without material resistance and is formed of smooth wire to permit the unobstructed travel of the ribbon.
The type holder for holding a supplementary type form is formed of a plate with a series of slots 75 (see Fig. at) in which are mounted suitable standard type 27 (see Fig. 8) adapted to engage the side of the slots for support to prevent lateral movement of the type when in printing position and to hold the type assembled when being used in the machine. The type are placed in the slots 75 in suitable form for printing names and post offices of addressees and are located in the slots by compressing the shoulders of the type at the end of the series or by a suitable blank similarly fixed into engage ment with the sides of'the slot 75 or in any other suitable manner desired. The grooves between the shoulders of the type in which the walls of the slot 75 in the type holder engage, may be of sufficient width to enable each type to engage a holder freely and to rest on the raised surface of the block without being supported by the holder during printing. The ends of the plate are depressed below the level of the type bearing slots which are open at one end to re ceive type. The end portions of the plate have the depending lugs 29 formed integral at each corner of the plate for engagement with the grooves 28 in the sides of the printing block as heretofore described.
The side edges of the type holder have a pair of oppositely disposed notches 76 in which a feeder carrier I'is adapted to pass into engagement with the plates, said feeder carrier consisting of a pair of parallel rails 77 held evenly spaced apart by handles T8 and having a pair of ends formed with movable shoulders 7 9 pivoted at 80 to said rails and held under pressure by springs 81 projecting slightly inward (see Fig. 10'). In use the rails are passed into engagement with the type holders in the notches 76 (see Fig. 11) with said holders together hanging from said rails while the feeder carrier is held by hand in horizontal position. hen said carrier is turned into upright position (see Fig. 3) with the shoulders 79 down, said holders rest upon said shoulders and are thus prevented from sliding down off of the carrier.
The feeder is in the form of a skeleton receptacle J which is adapted to receive a stack of horizontally disposed type holders which are to be fed into the machine. The lower end of this receptacle has situated near its corners, star wheels 82 a tooth at a time being adapted to project into the receptacle to support the stack of holders. These star wheels are mounted upon shafts S3 and 83 which are driven at the same speed by a train of gears 84-, 85, S6 and ST placed outside of the receptacle and adapted to turn each of the star wheels the distance of a. tooth or the distance of half av tooth for ward at a time thus allowing the lowermost type holder to be released from the stack and drop down into place in the machine. The shaft 83 has journaled thereon operating rocker arm 88 which is adapted to be thrown into and out of engagement with said shaft to turn and operate the latter by means of a spring pressed dog 89 and a ratchet wheel 9*. The free end of the rocker 88 has two openings 90 and 91 for the attachment of a pitman rod 92 (see Fig. 3) which is eccentrically connected to the operating pinion 93, the teeth of which mesh with the drive gear 15 thus causing reciprocation of the rocker 88. The mode of connection between the rocker arm and the shaft 83 on which it is mounted is by means of the ratchet wheel 94.- fixed on the shaft and the spring pressed dog S9 carried by the yoke 88 said dog being adapted. to engage the teeth of said ratchet wheel to revolve it. By withdrawing the dog 89 (see Figs. 12 and 13) against the tension of its spring 165 and out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel, thus lifting the pin 166 out of the lock groove 167, and then turning said dog upon the yoke 88 of the lever 88 in which said dog is free to slide the pins 166 are adapted to impinge against the end of the yoke and hold the dog retracted and the feed mechanism disconnected from operation. By reengagement of the dog 89 with the ratchet wheel the feeding mechanism resumes operation. By changing the point of connection to 90 on the rocker 88 the period of operation of the feeder may be changed so as to feed a type holder to the filling in block after every two printing impressions, thus enabling a letter sheet to be printed with a name and post office of an addressee and then an envelop addressed from the same type holder while in place upon the block.
The receptacle J is formed with a. pair of oppositely disposed vertical guide slots 97 in which the rails 77 of the feeder carrier are received to support said carrier and its stack of type holders in position in the feeder to cooperate with the feeder wheels 82. The guides 97 are provided with trip pins 08 (see Fig-.10) in their lower ends in the path of beveled edges 99 on the shoulders 79 so as to automatically withdraw the shoulders from engagement with the stack of type holders in said carrier when the latter is placed in said receptacle. When the stack of type holders has been exhausted from said receptacle, the carrier I is removed therefrom and the shoulders 79 resume normal position as illustrated in Fig. 19. Pins 100 are mounted on said shoulders impinging against stops 101 on the rails 77 thus limiting the inward movement of said stops and causing them to rest normally in the path of the holders which may be placed in the carrier. EL restraining sprii'ig 102 is employed to prevent back lash of the gears 8 1: to 87 inclusive, said spring having detents 103 impinging against the sides of the gears 85 and 86.
The receptacle J has a floor 105 slanting down toward the bed. of the machine, said floor terminating above the path of the im pression element. An extension plate 106 is hingedly attached to the floor 105 at 107, said plate resting normally in alinement with the floor 105 and with its lower end resting upon the lip 51 of the pusher 15. The type holders as fed froin the receptacle J by the feeder wheels drop upon the floor 105 and slide down the extension 100 on to the approach in the path of the pusher 15. Above the extension 106 a retarder plate 108 is pivoted to the receptacle J at 109. This retarder sweeps over the type holders as they are fedv upon the approach and prevents them from moving out of place. Both the extension 106 and the retarder 108 are adapted to sweep over the impression element assuming broken line position illustrated in Fig. 23 but these parts rest nor mally in the full line position indicated in F ig. 23 when the type holders are being fed upon the approach.
The receptacle J is mounted upon supporting rods 110 and 111 which are carried by brackets 11.2 and 112 upon the frame of the machine (see Fig. 5). The receptacle is free to slide on these rods and is held in selected position to cause the extension 106 and retarder 108 to register with the approach according to position in which the filling in block is set upon the bed. Set screws 113 are provided by which the receptacle may be secured in selected position upon its supporting rods 110 and 111. [u this manner the means for holding the type holders while they are being fed into the machine is adjustable transversely of the printing machine.
The shaft 83 carrying a pair of feeder- "i wheels 82 and. the gear Set a feather 1.14%;
slidable through the ratchet wheel 91 and collars 115 which in turn are journaled in the yolre 88 on the roclrer arm 88. Thus the feeder during connection on the receptacle J is free to move without disengagement from the driver when the feeder and receptacle are adjusted upon the supporting rods 110 and 111.
The packer (l consists of a receptacle 1.1.0 having a backwardly extending frame 117, said parts being adjustable transversely of the machine and supported upon rods 118 secured to the frame, set screws 119 being employed for holding the packer upon the rods 118 in selected position to register the slide 12 with the lower end of the hopper 40 so that type holders passing down the hopper 40 will be transferred by the slide 412 into the receptacle 116. The receptacle 116 has a pair of side walls 120 between which a shaft 1.21 (see Fig. 15) is rigidly secured "carrying the slide 42 which is freely journaled. thereon by means of flanges 122. A spring 123 secured by its ends to the shaft 121 has it free end pressing against the lower surface of the slide thus holding said slide normally registering with its free end impinging upwardly against the lower eX- tremity of the spout in position to receive the type holders therefrom. The slide 12 rests normally in the path of the impression element and as said impression element travels forward it impinges against the slide 412 which in turn sweeps over the impression element and returns into registration with the hopper 40. Below the celivery end of the slide 42 a packer arm 124; receives the type holders successively and by reciprocation passes them into engagement on the packer carrier K. (See Fi 18.)
The packer carrier K consists of a pair of parallel rails 126 the outer side of each being formed with a longitudinal feather 126. The rails 125 are spaced apart by yokes 127 and 12S and a handle 129 which is placed at one end of the pair of rails. The yoke 127 has an end engaging lip 130 at one side of the rails enabling the carrier to be lifted by engagemnt with the lip 130 and handle 129 and to be held by hand in horizontal position with the type holders thereon. The thickness of the rails and the distance they are spaced apart is such as will permit the rails to engage the type holders in their notches 76 leaving the long ends of the holders suspended while the holders are in vertical position. Sufficient clearance is provided under the yolres 128 and 127 to permit the type holders sliding freely on the rails below them. The carrier K is held by the packer in a pair of parallel channel guides 131, said guides being supported parallel to the base piece 132 of the packer by upwardly and outwardly ex tending arms 133 (see Fig. 17). The feath ers 126 are adapted to slide longitudinally in the channel grooves 134 in the guides 13]., the outer ends of the rails assuming a position immediately below the lower end of the slide 42 and being shouldered at 135 so that as the packer arm 124 reciprocates, the type holders are passed onto the rails 125 from which they are prevented from returning with the arm by engaging in the notches 135. The side edges of the holders are forced past a pair of restraining springs 136 and packed against a restraining block 139, said springs being fastened on the outer walls of the sides 120 of the receptacle 116 and their free ends formed with shoulders 137 projecting through openings 138 in said sides into the receptacle in the path of the type holders as they are passed on to the carrier rails 125. Said shoulders 137 assist in preventing the type holders returning after the latter have been forced past them. The packer arm 124 is provided with a concave head 140 which in normal position is positioned with its concavity in the path of the slide 42 to receive the type holders and guide them into upright position standing upon their lower ends in the receptacle 116. A resilient bumper 141 is placed in raised position upon the base 132 of the receptacle to reduce the jar of the type holders dropping in the receptacle also to hold them in vertical position so that their notches 76 will pass over the rails 125 by the reciprocation of the packer arm. The head140 is pivotally mounted at 142 upon the upper end of the packer arm and has a squared neck 14B projecting back of the pivot point 142. A flat spring 144 carried by the arm 124 presses firmly against the flat side of the squared end of the neck 1-4;) and tends to hold the head in the position illustrated in Fig. 23 to receive and guide the type holders into vertical position upon the bumper 141 in the receptacle 116 but permits said head turning while the ends of its concave side press against the sides of the plates to advance the plates while remaining in vertical position during the forward movement of the packer arm 124. The packer arm 124 is carried upon a sleeve 146 which is journaled in the sides of the receptacle 116,- said sleeve being feathered upon the shaft 147 which is jour'naled' in the frame of the machine to permit transverse movement of the packer said shaft carrying a rocker arm 148. This rocker arm is re 'cipro cated by means of a pitman rod 149 cccentrically journaled at one end to the gear 150 which in turn is journaled on the frame of the machine with its teeth meshing with the drive gear 15 from which motion imparted to the packer. The size of the gear 150 and the actuating parts between it and the packer arm are proportioned so as to cause the packer arm to reciprocate after each type holder is received from the hopper 40, returning into normal position after placing said holder upon the carrier K in readiness to receive another holder. .After the carrier K is filled with type holders it can be removed and the holders placed in a receptacle not shown and afterward the carrier can be returned to its place in the packer to receive another series of holders. The receptacle in which the type holders are deposited by the carrier K is of ordinary construction and not shown but both of the carriers K and I are so constructed as to easily deposit plates in and. remove them from said receptacle during the use of the machine.
In connection with the apparatus described I have chosen to illustrate a paper stacker H-which is adapted to receive the printed material passing from the machine.
In operation assuming that two similar platens are used placed at even intervals on the belts the pitman rod 92 is secured to the rocker arm 88 in the opening 91 and as each platen roller travels around the bed once a type holder is released by the feeder and slides down into place on the approach in front of the pusher one reciprocation of the rocker being made to advance the feeder wheels the distance between two teeth. The pusher then passes the type holder upon the raised portion 26 of the block in the form, the spring 77 meanwhile holding the ribbon out of the path of the holder. An impression roller after a sheet of paper has been positioned upon the form either by hand or autonnitically produces a printing impression by cooperating with the type forms and the ribbon. The strippers followmg each impression rollerengage and remove the paper off of the form. This operation being repeated the type holders after being used are pushed forward, a step at a time by succeeding type holders from the feeder and successively slide down into the hopper and into the packer where they are successively transferred automatically onto the packer carrier. The belts are adapted to support one or more impression rollers.
lVhen it is desired to print letters and address envelops successively. two platen rollers are employed, one having an imprcssion surface extending across the entire form including the type composing the body of the letter, the name. post ollice and salutation and the other such as illustrated in Fig. 22 having an impression surface extending over only the type composing the name and post office of the addressee in the filling in type holder which will answer as the address. One roller thus performs the func tion of printing the body of the letter with name and post ofiice of addressee and the other of printing the address on an envelop. These rollers are placed at suitable intervals on the belts so that after the letter is printed an envelop may be inserted and addressed from the type composing the name and post oilice of the addressee which has been previously inserted in the form. When operating the machine in this manner two impression rollers are employed such as described and two stripper shafts carrying strippers for removing the printed material one shaft following one roller and the other the following. One only of these stripper shafts however carries a dog 55 for engaging and advancing the type form into place in the machine and a trip for operating said shaft and causing the dog to engage and advance the pusher at proper intervals. Thus each filling in holder remains in place on the surface 26 of the block while the two impression rollers cooperate with the form. ltn order to cause the feeder to release a new plate and pass it into the machine after two impressions have been made the pitman 92 is attached in the opening 90 in the rocker arm 88, the throw of the rocker arm requiring two reciprocations to release a plate.
Then the machine is employed to print letters and address envelops the type composing the salutation is included in the main form and the type composing the name and post ethos of the addressee in the filling in type holder. When the machine is used to print letters and not envelops the type composing the salutation may be carried by the filling in type holder and the impression roller illustrated in Fig. 22 replaced by one similar to that illustrated in Fig.
During the operation of the machine the letters and envelope as printed are removed from the forms by the strippers and passed on the paper slide 151 and extension 152 of the hopper 40 into the stacker H where they are packed against a yielding support 153 by packer arms 154 which are reciprocated by shaft Shaft 155 is rocked by rocker arm 156, pitman 157, and gears which are driven by gear 15 at proper speed to cause the arms 15 1- to reciprocate and receive and pack the letters and envelope as they a e successively printed. Each arm 15 1 is mounted on a bifurcated support 160, the bifurcations of: which have square openings 161 fitting the square shaft 155 on which the support is longitudinally slidable. A. spring 162 tends to hold the support stationary on the shaft. The arm 15kt carries a weighted guide 163 which is pivoted thereto at 1.64 and rests on the floor of the paper stacker. This guide assists in directing and holding the lower edges of the printed material during the stacking operation. The slides 15.1 are slidably supported upon a shaft 37 which is supported by oracle ets 38 said brackets b .ing adjustably sup ported upon the bed to and. lower by means of bolts 39.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which ll now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood. that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be ca Tied out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.

A printing machine having a type bed adapted to hold a type form, a platen cooperating with said bed, a filling in type block on said bed adapted to hold a separate type form and having a raised portion, a filling in type holder for said separate type form movable into and out of printing position on said block and having shouldered type, said holder being adapted to support and suspend said type by their shoulders, means for automatically engaging said holder tending to prevent movement thereof while the type therein rest with their nonprinting ends independent of said holder upon said raised portion of said block and means for automatically engaging said type holder to move it into printing position upon said block, said raised portion of said block being adapted to co-act with said type in' said holder to support them independent of their shoulders in printing position and the lower portion of said block permitting the type in said holder to lower in said holder and rest in non-printing position when off of said .illSLKl portion.
2. A. type bed holding a type form, a platen having orbital movement around said bed cooperating with said bed to print from type thereon. a filling in type block on said bed, filling in type holders movable into and out of cooperation with said block, means for automatically feeding said holders successively into printing position upon said block and ejecting them, means for automatically receiving said holders from said bloclr and packing them in serially suspended position, and means carrying said platen and having a device adapted to engage said feeding means to operate the latter.
3. A printing machine comprising in combination, a type bed, an; inking ribbon above said bed, platen having orbital movement about said bed to cooperate with. said. bed. and. ribbon to print from type on said bed, filling in. holders for type hori- Zontally movable into and out of printing position across said bed, a filling in type block on said. bed below sai d ribbon adapted to receive and support 1 holders singly in printing position upon d bad, means for automatically engaging each holder in printing position upon said block to prevent longitudinal movement thereof while resting in printing position, a push element for advancing type holders into printing position on said block and adapted to move out of engaging position when the holder advanced reaches printing position and means for automatically feeding type holders on to said type block into the path of said push element, said block having a raised portion adapted to co-act with the type of said holder to support them in printing position, the lower portion of said block permitting the block to rest in non printing position when oil of said raised portion and out of printing position on said block.
4:. A printing machine, comprising, in combination, a type bed, an inking ribbon above said bed, a platen adapted to cooperate with type on said bed and said ribbon to print, filling in holders for type horizontally movable above said bed, a filling in type block to receive said holders said block having a raised portion adapted to co-act with type of said holder to support them in printing position, the lower portion of said block permitting said holders to rest in non-printing position when off of said raised portion on said block, automatic means for feeding said holders into printing position on said block and ejecting them therefrom and means for raising said ribbon above said holders while they are moving on said block.
5. A printing machine, comprisin in combination, a type bed, an inking ribbon above said bed, a platen adapted to cooperate with type on said bed and ribbon to make a printing impression, filling in type holders horizontally movable above said bed, a filling in type block on said bed adapted to receive said holders, said block having a raised portion adapted to co-act with type of said holder to support them in printing position, the lower portion of said block permitting said holders to rest in non-printing position when off of said raised portion on said block, means carryingsaid platen and means carried by said carrying means for feeding said holders into printing position on said block and ejecting them therefrom.
6. A printing machine, comprising, in combination, a type bed adapted to support a type form,-an inking ribbon above said bed, a platen adapted to cooperate with type on said bed and said ribbon to deliver a printing impression, filling in holders for shoulder type horizontally movable abovesaid bed, means for supporting said holders in a stack above said bed, a filling in type block to receive said holders successively having a raised portion upon its surface, means for holding one oi said holders at a time in printing position on said block, automatic means for releasing one of said holders from said stack and delivering the same upon said block and automatic means for engaging said released holder and placing it in printing position upon said block; said holders being adapted to support and. suspend said type by their shoulders, the raised portion of said block being adapted to co-act with the type in said holders to support them in dependent of their shoulders in printing position and the lower portion of said block permitting the type in said holders to lower therein and rest in non-printing position.
7. A printing machine, comprising, in combination, a type bed, an inking ribbon above said bed, a platen adapted to cooperate with type and said ribbon to produce a printing impression, filling in holders for type horizontally movable across said bed, a filling in type block on said bed to receive said holders, means for holding one of said holders at a time in printing position on said block, means for supporting said holders in a stack above said bed, automatic means for releasing one of said holders from said stack and delivering the same upon said block, means for automatically engaging said released holder and placing it in printing position upon said block and means for automatically raising said ribbon above the type in said holders on said block while said holders are in motion.

A printing machine, comprising, in combination, two cooperating printing elements, one a stationary type form and the other a printing roller, a printing block in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders movable into printing position on said block, a feeder adapted to support said holders in the form of a stack, means for releasing the lowermost holder from said stack and delivering it onto said block, means for engaging said released holder and passing it into printing position on said block, a carrier for said holders adapted to be attached to said feeder and having holding means at its lower end to prevent said holders from becoming detached when the carrier is in upright position, said feeder having means for moving said holding means to release said holders when said carrier is adjusted to said feeder and said holders having notches in their edges in which said can rier engages.

A printin machine, oomprisin two eooperating elements, one a type form and the other an impression roller. a filling in block in said form, a plural it of filling in holders movable across said block and into printing:- position in said form, a feeder adapted to support said holders while formed in a stack, means for releasing the lowermost holder from said stack and into position to pass into printing position upon said block, means for automatically moving said re leased holder into printing position upon said "block and ejecting its predecessor from said block, an inking ribbon upon said form and over the filling in type holders on said bloclt, means for automatically raising said ribbon above the type in said holders as the latter move upon said block, said holders having notches in their side edges, a carrier having side rails adapted to engage said holders in said notches,vmovable shoulders at one end of said guide rails in the path of said holders to support them when said rails are held in upright position with said shoulders at their lower ends, said feeder having means for engaging said rails to support them when the holders in said carrier are formed in a stack in said feeder and means in said feeder for moving said shoulders out of engagement with said holders and releasing said holders from said carrier.

A printing machine, comprising, in combination, cooperating printing elements comprising a type form and two impression rollers, an inking ribbon movable over said type form, a filling in block in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders adapted to move succesively into printing position on said block, means for supporting said type holders while formed in a stack, means for releasing the lowermost type holder from said stack into position to be moved into printing position on said block, means for moving said released holder into printing position upon said block and ejecting its pred' ecessor out of printing position and means for operating said feeding means once after both of said impression elements have cooperated with the type in one of said holders to produce two printing impressions.

In a printing machine, three cooperating impression elements, one a type form and the other two impression rollers, a filling in type block placed in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders adapted to be placed successively on said block to print Salutations and addresses, a feeder lo-- catecl above the path of said rollers and arranged to support and to feed said holders successively to said block and means for movably supporting said feeder whereby it may be adjusted to register with said block.

In a printing machine, two cooperating impression elements, one a type form and the other a platen roller, a filling in type block placed in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders adapted to be placed successively on said block, a feeder located above the path of said rollers and arranged to support and to feed said holders successively to said block, means for supporting said feeder in position to register with said block, and a slide pivotally supported between said feeder and ebloek to convey said holders, said slide being movable out of the path of said roller.

In a printing machine, three cooperating elements, one a type form and the other two impression rollers, a filling in type block placed in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders adapted to be placed successively on said block to print and a receptacle supporting said holders in alinement to deliver them successively to said block, said receptacle having means which are operated. to feed one of said holders to said block to every two printing impressions made by said rollers,

In a printing machine, two cooperating impression elements, one a type form and the other a platen, a carrier for said platen movable orbitally around said form, a type block placed in said form, filling in type holders adapted to be passed successively into printing position on said block, a pusher operati'vely placed. to project a holder at a time onto said block, a trans verse support carried by said carrier, paper stripping means carried by said support to engage and remove printed material off of said form, a dog tiltingly carried by said support, .means tending to hold said dog above the path of travel of said pusher and means for tilting said dog and holding it in engagement with said pusher to advance a holder and release the same when said holder reaches printing position on said block.

In a printing machine, two cooperating impression elements, one a type form and the other a platen roller movable orbitally about said form, a type block held in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders, means for placing said holders successively in printing position on said block and ejecting them therefrom, a packer be low said form adapted to receive said holders, a holder carrier detachably secured in said packer, a reciprocable member in said packer adapted to successively pass the holders into engagement with said carrier and means for actuatin said reciprocable menr ber.

In a printing machine, two cooperating impression elements, one a type form and the other a platen roller movable over said form, a type block held in said form, a plu ality of filling in type holders adapted to be placed successively in printing position on said block and ejected therefrom after a printing impression, a packer adapted to receive said holders successively from said block, a holder carrier detachably secured to said packer in position to receive said holders therefrom and means for movably supporting said packer to register the same in the path of the holders ejected from said block.

In a printing machine, two cooperating impression elements, one a type form and the other a platen roller movable over said form, a type block held in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders adapted to be placed successively in printing position on said block and removed therefrom, a packer adapted to receive said holders successively from said block and a holder car- 'rier detachably secured to said packer in position to receive said holders therefrom.

In a printing machine, a type form, two impression rollers movable over and cooperating with the type in said form to produce two printing impressions, a filling in type block in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders adapted to be placed successively on said block, a feeder located above the path of said rollers and arranged to support and to feed said holders successively to said block, a slide in the path of said rollers movably supported to avoid obstructing the movement of said impression rollers and adapted to assist in transferring type holders from said feeder to said. type block and means for movably supporting said feeder whereby it may be adjusted to register with said block.
27. In a printing machine, a type form, two impression elements adapted to cooperate with part and all of the type in said form to produce two different printing impressions, a filling in type block in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders adapted to be placed successively on said block, a magazine for said holders located above the path of said elements and arranged to feed said holders toward said type block and means for supporting said magazine in line to deliver said holders onto said block.
28. In a printing machine, a type form, two impression elements movable over and adapted to cooperate with type in said form to produce two printing impressions, a filling in type block in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders adapted to be placed successively on said block, a maga' zine located above the path of said elements and arranged to support said holders and to feed them toward said type block, a slide in the path of said impression elements movably mounted upon said magazine and adapted to sweep over each of said im-' pression elements and to assist in the trans fer of said holders from said magazine toward said block.
29. In a printing machine, a type form, two impression elements movable over and adapted to cooperate with type in said form to produce two printing impressions, a filling in type block in said. form, a plurality zine located above the path of said elements and arranged to support and to feed saidi holders toward said type block, a slide in the path of said impression elements hinged upon said magazine and adapted to sweep over each. of said impression elements and to assist in the transfer of said holders from said magazine toward said block.

In a printing machine, a type form, two platen rollers adapted to cooperate with type in said. form to produce two printing impressions, a filling in type block in said form, a plurality of filling in type holders adapted to be placed successively on said block, a feeder having star wheels supporting said holders and adapted to feed them successively to said block, means for turn- .ing said star wheels to feed said holders successively from said feeder, means for supporting said feeder and means for conveying said holders from said feeder to said block.

In a printing machine, a stationary bed, an endless carrier adapted to travel around said bed, a type form upon said bed, an impression element upon said carrier adapted to cooperate with type in said form to produce a printing impression, a series of independent type holders, a type block upon said bed adapted to receive said holders, a feeder associated with said block adapted to cause the holders to assume printing position upon said block, a magazine in which said holders are supported, actuating means for moving said carrier, means cooperating with said actuating means for moving one of said holders at a time from said magazine toward said block, a guide interposed between said magazine and type block for conducting said holders into the path of said feeder to be engaged thereby, said guide being movable to allow said im pression element to pass.

In a printing machine, plates having shouldered edges and adapted to bold type forms, a plate holder having a'pair of parallel rails adapted to engage below said shoulders and suspend said plates, a pair of oppositely disposed depressible stops at one end of said pair of rails projecting inwardly between said rails and adapted to engage below and assist in supporting said plates when said holder is in longitudinally upright position with said stops at its lower end, a feeder with which the end of said holder having said stops is adapted to detachably engage when said holder is in said upright position, a plurality of star wheels .journaled in said feeder below said plates positioned with their teeth projecting inwardly and adapted to support a stack of said plates in substantially horizontal position and to release said plates successively,
a type form, a platen roller adapted to pass successively over said form and means for revolving said star wheels to release said plates in synchronism with the strokes of said platen roller and means for transferring said plates as they are released from said feeder into said form.
