Description

v JNITIEZD' L STAJES HOWARD E Dvnnnrn or GRAND RAPIDS, MIcrIIGAN.
' l' sHoE-'roLIsH nox.)
To all whom t may concern.:` v v B'e it known that I, HOWARD E. EvEnE'r'r', a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the countyLo'f-Kent and' State of Michigan, have invented certain4 new and useful Improvements .in Shoe-.Polish Boxes, of which the following is a specification. y
lMy invention relates lto improvements in shoe polish boxes and its objects are: first, to provide a shoe blacking-box with which blacking may be readily pressed longitudinally of the box, and made to exude as'desired' forI distribution upon the surface of the object b eing blackened, as ashoe; second, to provide a means whereby the daubing and spreading of the blacking-may be rendered uniform over the surface being covered; third, to provide a means whereby the box, used as a polisher handle, maybe made to assume the most desirable vangle with the surface being treated; fourth to provide a means whereby the blacking box may be packed into a suit case without dangery of injuring other articles in the case,
and, fifth, to provide a meanswhereby the Y box may be readily refilled and reused, thus soV avoiding the necessary expense of purchasing a new box for blacking, as each box is exhausted, or with which the cover and distributer may, if desired, be retained -to be used upon several boxes, thus rendering it possible to refill an emptied box, if desired, or to connect a new box with the old cap, which is a combined dauber, distributer and polisher.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the box practically upon the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig.- 2 is a plan of the box complete. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the cap and polisher disconnect-ed Vfrom the box. Fig. 4L is a transverse section of the box practically upon the line '4L- 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 shows the position of the box when daubing or spreading the 'bla'cking upon a surface to be blacked and polished, and Fig.
6 shows the box in the most desirable position for smoothing and polishing a surface. Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing 1 represents the box which isa plain box or tube having a screw thread formed at one end, as at 3, and a securlng element formed at the other end, consisting of a groove formed in the end of the lcase for P.x'llezN'rl oFFICE,

the reception of the edges of the disk 8, Ias
at 9, the box being openfat both ends.` 2 represents a cap` that is fitted to be screwed upon the-end ofthe box at 3, and which' has V. a partition 6 formed in it upon-aconvenient langle to allowof the box beingused conveniently for polishing the surfa'cejbeing i worked upon, as indicated in Fig. 6.V This cap 1s, also, provided with an openingat a for the gradual passage of blacking from the box upon the surface-being treated, and" with a polishing element, as '5, which may-y bemade'of felt, as indicated, of bristles, halr, or other suitable material.
I provide for forcing the blacking I through the box, and to exude out of the opening a, by means ofa piston or like element, 11, which is mounted upon the rod 10,
the two being V,screw threaded lso that the"y turning ofthe rod in one direction,- sayy tothe right, will force kthe blackingagainst the'l .partitlon 6 and out through `the opening a,
and turning therodin the other direction will cause/the element 11 -to recede from the to move longitudinally of the rod 10, as
hereinbefore set forth. Inside of this head,
v and pivotally connected with the rod10, as
at f, is a disk 8 that is designed to be made to engage with the-.securing element 9 on the box to prevent the head 7 from being forced outwardly, away from the box when attempting to force the vblac'king out of the opening a,.as hereinbefore described.
I prevent the piston 11, or the securing element 8 vrevolving in the box when the rod 10 is made to revolve, by forminga rib c in the inside ofthe box, running the entire length thereof, and a corresponding notch, as d, in both the piston 11 and the securing elementS, to slide along upon said rib. will be understood that it is not absolutely necessary to form the notch d in thel element 8, though I prefer it there. To'prevent the blacking exuding through the opening a, when not desired, I have proa forlthe Indy-be madeto fit so closely over the end of the box as'jto -insmre perfect cleanlii'iessv when the where, ,othervvise, danger would'exist.'
In Fi s'. 5 and 6 I haveshown the `re 1ati \w positions of the box', first, when daubing.- or distributingv .the blacking upon thefsurfaoe ofl the object, 'e, being -tieatedfl and .the 5j latter" instance, in properly spreading and polishingA .upon `the surface. ofgthe article" being treated.
L "I vWish .tov call particularattention 'to .the" lfact that v the daubing element, -to lWit: the opening a,} and lthe"spreadingand p lishing element,i to vvit: the felt, or-other suitable element act independently; of each zother. Thus, I avoidl permeatingthe. entire body of the. polishingelement' -vv'ithf the: v-blackn lwhen daubingv or .roughly --placing the b laekfv ing. upon the sur-face; tobe'. treated, I' also desire to say that 'Whilel I v.have g usedg the term.: fshoeV blaeking and 'polislin A.tlirouglio'ut -myspeci-ication, the cap;v is" oi u seffor allkinds of shoe dressings yand olish, ingl'service, and forother uses-for w ich -it may be available, 'and I find that .the .pe-1. culiar position and `form ofthefendfor parltition;6,"of the cap 2 renders the.- passage v.of the: polish much smoother j than any tother -1 form'ycould-iproduce. '-It alsohasthe *adfj vantage of; keeping lthe polishalwa'ys moist vand free flowing, asbut little ofthe polish`ff isjexposed to the Weather atzone time; Ido not mean to restrict-myself to4 thel use-ofthe' lparticular elements .shown for forcing.' the contentsl of lthe box 'o'ut *of it, as there are many n ieans for producing -the' der" sired 'result Without,` departing.; fromf'the spirit 4of myy invention.v
