' E, A. ZIMMERMAN.
COMBINED HAIR PLAN-E AND SAFETY RAZOR. APPLICATION FILED-FEB. 20. 19.20,

EDGAR AQZI M RMAN, or SHAMOKIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED HAIR-PLANE AND, SAFETY-RAZOR.
' Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11116 8,
Application filed February 20, 1920. Serial No. 360,097;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR A. ZIMMER- MAN, a citizen of'the United States, residing at :#18 North 6th street, Shamokin, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Combined Hair- Planes and Safety-Razors, .of which the following is aspecificationfl V i This invention relates to combined hair planes and safety razors, and more particularly to that type which may be inclosed in a handle similar to a straight razor.
An object of this invention is to provide a combined hair plane and safety razor which will permit the user to secure a firm grasp upon it, even though the hands are wet or soapy.
Another object is to provide suitable means of holding the comb and cutting blade or blades in operative position.
A still further object is to provide an efficient and easilyoperated means whereby the comb and blade may be readily disengaged from their holding members for cleaning.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
With these objects stated in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the dev ce.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view with the comb and blade removed.
The handle 1 is of the ordinary type of handle used in connection with straight razors. For holding the blade or blades 2 and comb 3 in operative position, I employ a one-piece resilient clamping member having two longitudinal extending clamping members or arms 4 and 5 on each side of the said blades and comb, said members 4. and 5 being slightly bowed inwardly at or near their central portion. .The clamping member 4 extends a slight distance beyond the member 5, and has its outer end bent back to provide a catch or retainer 6. The member 5 is bent in slightly at its outer end and is formed into an end portion or tip 7. This tip 7 is adapted to engage and lock'in the said catch or retainer 6, so that the blade or blades and comb will be securely held at the pivot pin 10, grasp the free end ofthe their outer ends. I provide a slidable collar or-band-=member 8 near the inner end of the clamping members, and positioned around the same, which when slid toward the'blade and comb, causes them to be securely andrigidly locked in operative position. In addition, I also provide a pair of inwardly extending indentations 9 on the inner face of each clamping member 4 and will be understood that either one or two blades may be used with my improved hair plane and safety razor. A pivot pin 10 extends through the said handle 1 and clamping members 4 and 5. I also provide a suit-' able washer 0r spacing block 11 to fit over said pivot pin 10, and positioned between the clamping members. 7
In operation, supposing the blade or blades and comb are in position, and it becomes desirable to clean them. In this case, it is only necessary to slide the collar 8 back toward clamping members with one hand, and the handle with the other hand. Then, by hav-v ing the handle at right angles to the clamping members, or in alinement therewith, and by giving the said handle a turning motion in the first case or a flexing motion in the latter case, the tip? will be caused to disen= gage from the retainer 6. When the blades and comb are not in position, the washer or spacing block 11 will act as the pivot, and the same effect may be had, as though the blades and comb were. in position, The clamping members may be housed in the handle, as in a straight razor.
Having thus described my invention what I 5, and opposite each other, for more readily holding the blades and comb in position. It
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
'1. A device of the character described comprising a handle, clamping means pivotally attached thereto, said clamping means comprising a pair of resilient clamping members permanently attached at their inner ends, and a comb and blade or blades positioned between said clamping members, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a handle, clamping means pivotally attached thereto, said clamping means comprising a pair of resilient clamping members, a comb and blade or blades positioned between said clamping members, and locking means formed upon the free ends of said clampingmembers, for holding the comprising a. p'airv of, resilient: clamping parts in operative position.
3. A device of the character described comprising a handle, clamping means piv V otallyr attached theretoisaid. clamping means comprising a pair ofre's1lient clamping members, a comb and blade or blades posit'ioned between said-clamping members; a catch formed at the free end of said members and a slidable ring or collar positioned .over. 7 said ;members, and positioned a between said comb and-blade. and the hand1e.-
