STOVE.
Application filed September 20, 1919. Serial No. 325,052.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FLINT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport News, in the county of Warwick and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stoves especially adapted for burning wood.
An important object of this invention is to provide a stove of the character described, having novel means for directing the heat generated by the stove forwardly from the same whereby the stove may be positioned relatively close to a wall.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stove of the character described which is simple, eflicient and cheap to manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same;
Figure 1 is a perspective of a stove embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 22 of Fig. -1, 1
Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through the stove,
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section through the stove, the view being taken on line 44 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a perspective of a cooking utensil support, and,
Fig. 6 is a perspective of another cooking utensil support.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 generally designates my improved stove which in plan view is oval shaped. The casing includes inner and outer spaced vertical shells or walls 11 and 12 respectively. The inner wall as indicated in Fig. 3 terminates below the top of the stove and is secured in spaced relation to the outer shell by bolts 13 and sleeves 14 which latter are arranged between the inner and outer shells. An air inlet pipe 15 extends through the inner and outer shells 11 and 12 at the bottom of the same and is flanged to the inner side of the shell 11, as indicated at 16. Pivotally connected draft plates 17 are secured to the forward portion of the pipe 15 and are provided with suitable openings 18 adapted for registration.
A flue pipe 19 communicates with the upper ,portion of a combustion chamber 20 and is connected to the rear portion of a top plate 21 The edge portion of the top plate Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 1, 1920.
21 is flanged about the outwardly flared upper portion 22 of the shell12, as indicated at 23.
To direct the heat forwardly from the stove and to prevent the heat from being radiated rearwardlyof the same I have provided abafiie plate 24. The baffle plate 24 includes a top wall 25 secured to the rear Wall of the casing 10 and the adjacent portions of the sides of the casing. A front wall 26 depends from thetop wall 25 and has its lower portion 27 inclined inwardly. The lower end of the front wall of the baflie plate terminates in spaced relation to the rear wall of the casing toprovide a restricted heat inlet 28. Apertures or perforations 29 are provided in theupper portion of the front wall 26 to permit of thedischarge of heated air from a chamber 30 formed by the baflle plate 24. By reason of the restricted inlet 28 but a small amount of heat may enter the chamber 30 and the rear side of the stove is therefore comparatively cool.
'Attaching flanges 31 carried by the baffle plate 24 serve to secure the same within the casing. The top wall 25 is secured to the top 21 of the stove by a pair of depending brackets 32.
The top 21 is provided with a removable closure 33. The closure 33 is arranged over an opening 34 in the top 21. The upstanding side walls 35 of the opening 34 form a support for a removable annular disk 36" having an annular flange 36 which is L- shaped in cross section. The disk 36 has a central opening, as indicated at 37, and is adapted for supporting such cooking utensils as frying pans. A second support in the form of a disk 38 is adapted to be arranged on the annular disk 36 when it is desired to support irons and the like.
A cooking utensil supporting tray 39' is provided with a sleeve 40 rotatably carried by the draft pipe 19. The tray 39 as is obvious may be positioned directly over the stove or slightly to one side of the same whereby articles supported by the stove may be subjected to the desired degree of heat.
As indicated in Figsal and 2 an ornamental foot rail 42 is secured to the lower portion of the casing 10 bybolts 43 and spacing sleeves 44; As further indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 a suitable receptacle 45 is secured to a bottom 46 by guides 47.
A handle 48 is secured to the front side of the receptacle and it is adapted for withdrawing the same. The receptacle 45 is adapted for the reception of any refuse which may collect about the stove.
The bottom, 46 is provided-with upstanding'sides 49 which surround the shell 12. A plate 50 is secured to the bottom 46 and has its side edges spaced from the side edges of the bottom 46 for providing a groove in which the bottom of the casing rests.
An ornamental rail 51 is secured in spaced relation to theupper portion of the casing by bolts 52 and suitable spacing'sleeves 53.
In the use of my .invention'a fire is made in the combustion chamber 20 and the products of combustion are caused to principally I pass off in front of the baffle plate 24 and but a small quantity of heat is permitted to enter the chamber 30 by reason of the re- Stricted opening in the same. By reason of the fact that but a small amount of heat may enter the rear chamber 30 the rear side of the stove is kept comparatively cool and the stove may therefore be positioned relatively close to a wall. v
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain withinthe spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
combustion chamber, a baffle plate arranged within the rear portion of the casing and forming a chamber at one side of the combustion chamber, the lower end of said bafiie plate being arranged in proximity to the rear side of the casing for forming a restricted entrance opening to said second named chamber from said combustion chamher, the upper portion of said baffle plate being provided with exhaust openings establishing communication between the upper portion of said combustion chamber andthe upper portion of said second named chamber.
' 2. A stove includin a casing having sides and a top, thereby orming a combustion chamber, a baffle plate traversing the rear portion of the combustion chamber and comprising a top wall and a downwardly and inwardly extending front wall thereby forming a chamber, the lower end of said front wall being spaced forwardly from the rear side of said casing for establishing com- 'munication between the lower portion of apertures for establishing communication,
between the upper portion of said second named chamber and the upper portion of said combustion chamber, and a flue pipe connected to the top of the casing adjacent the rear portion of the top plate of said baflie member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
