Be -it known that I, ARGYLE CAMPBELL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Chicago, in the County of Cook and State of Illinois, .have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inV Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference beingv had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofV this specication. -f
This invention `relates to improvements in cars. Y
As is well known, cars employed in the' carrying of oreand usedy on ore docks for discharging into loins that in turn deliver the ore tothe boats, are made comparatively shortand are provided with a single dumping opening in the bottom. The single dumping opening is necessitated because of the standardized dimensions and spacing of the bins of theore docks and ore boats and the consequent necessity of spotting the ore cars properly on the dock before discharging the ore. Because of the limitationv to a single opening` in .the bottom of such-ore cars, itis highly essential that the opening be made as large as possible in order to prevent bri'dging7 of the ore in the car'and also to insure as speedy discharge of the Ore.. as possible.

In said drawings, the car is shown of that type such as commonly employed in the l.ore carrying service, the same having. ai'single hopperv and the over-all length'of the car be-l ing relatively short, approximatingtwentyfour feet. The car is shown as havingfside walls 10. These are extended downwardly and secured to the outer ange of the Z-bar side sill indicated at 12.A On each side of the car, inwardly and downwardly inclined side sheets 11- are employed las indicated most clearly in Fig 2, the lower edges of said sheets 11 being securedto the inner flanges ofl the Z-bar side ,sills 12. The single hopper also has sloping endwalls indicated at 13-13'in Fig.l 5 and it-will be noted that the lower edges of the inclined Vend walls 13 and inclined partsof the side sheets 11 terminate at a point approximately on a level with the-top of the short center or draft sillsfl-lt on each end of the car. Said sills 14 are preferably of channel shape and are cut off at their inner ends as indicated at lso as to avoid passing through the discharge opening ofthe carand leaving the latter completely uninterrupted to facilitate thedischarge of ore-or other material. Thedischargeopeiiing of the car isclosed by two sets of doors, each set comprising a pair of pivotally mounted doors. 'One set includes the two pivotedy bottom doors A-A and the other set includes the pivoted doors B-B. The doors A-A'are pivoted along theirouter longitudinally eX- tending edges as indicated 'at 1-6-16 to hinge butts 17 p17 secured to the under side of the Zebars 12. The doors A-A are comprised preferably of sheet metal suitably reinforced on. their under sidesby longitudinally extending .braces 18 and transversely extending braces 19. The inner edges of the doors A-A are curved as indicated at 2O so as to provide a wedging joint when the doors As-A are in closed position.

hopper sheet 13, is an operating shaft 21. The latter is provided at the center thereof with a hubA 22 to which is pivoted a link links 27 to the extended ends 28--28 of thel respectivebars 18 on the doors A-A. The

Near one end of the shaft 2l but inside ofthe corresponding side wall l0 of the car, the shaft has securedy thereto another hub 29. Pivotally connected to the latter is a link 30 which in turn is pivotally connected to a short link 31. VA hook-shaped link 32 ispivotally attached to the link 31 and from the link 32 extends an adjustable turn-buckle link 33. From the end of the link 33 extends a'chain 34 which is secured to a sheave wheel 35 carried at'gthe outer end of a transversely extending auxiliary shaft 36.,` Said shaft 36 is suitably mounted'inV bearings provided by one of thel side wall` sheets of the car yand in upstanding bearing brackets 37 carriedl by the center sills. A
ycover plate 38 joins the bearing brackets 37 and is adapted to shield the sheave wheels 39-39 carried `by said shaft-between the brackets 37. Two of said sheave wheels 39 are provided, from-each of which extends a chain indicated conventionally at 40 in Fig. 5. The lower ends of said chains 40 are connected to the corresponding extended ends 28 of the braces'18 carried by thel doors A*A. Y
f The main operating shaft 21 is provided ateach outer end thereofwithV a ratchet wheel 41 and with said ratchetwheels 41 are adapted-to coperate locking dogs 42. In order to be able to operate the door mechanism from either side of the car, an auxiliary shaft 43 is extended transversely of the car, the latter at each end thereof having an operating handle 44 and pivotally connected to the operating handles 44 and correspondingdogs 42 are links 45. As will be understood by those skilled in the art, manipulation of either handle 44 on either side ofthe car will release both dogs 42 simultaneously and consequently permit rotation of the main operating shaft 21.
` AssumingV the parts in theposition shown in the drawings, rotation of the shaft 21 in a clockwise direction will yunwind the linkages immediately adjacent thereto. Similarly,the links 30, 31 and 32 will unwind from the shaft 21 which will permit the chain 34 to wind about the sheave wheel 35. This in turn permits the chains 40 Vto kunwind from the sheave wheels 39 so thatthe opening and closing movements of the doors A-A are uniform at each end.
The doors B-B are pivotally connected along their upper edges as indicated at v4G to hinge brackets 47 secured to braces 48 that extend transversely of the car and serve to connect the ends of the cut off center sills with the end sheets 13 ofthe car hop-c per. The doors B, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, form `continuations of the end hopper sheets 13 when the doors B-B are in closed position and are adapted toiswingtoward the ends of the car about transverse axes, as
will be understood from an inspection ofy erating mechanism and mechanism ywhich.

To operate the doors B-fB, the-extended ends 28 of the respective doors A-A, at each end of the latter, are provided withl wedgev shaped camming members 51-51, preferably made inthe form of plates or castings and riveted to the braces 18-18 of the doors A-A. Said cam wedges 51 are so located as to engage the under sides of the bracesV 50 carried by the doors B-B so that, as the ico doors A-A moveupwardly toward closed position, thecam wedges 51 will engage the braces 50 and gradually force the doors B-B to closed position as the doors A-A reach closed position. As will be understood, the stops 49 for the doors B-B are so adjusted andthe camming wedges 51 so positioned-that the doors' B-,B will be permitted the knecessary opening swinging movement but at the same time leave them in such a position as to' insure the camming wedges 51l properly engaging the braces 50.y
As an additional means for holding the doors B-B in closed position, the doors A-A, near the outer ends thereof, are provided with castings 52-52 having upturned inclined fingers 53 which engage the under sides of the doors B-B just at vthe final closing movement and effectively hold the doors B-B in closed position, yparticularly near their ends. v
VW'ith the arrangements shown, it is evident that I obtain a relatively great opening area, the same in fact being longer than the distance between the inner -wheelsof the trucks andwider than the distance betweenv Furthermore,V the operating doors B-B being closed by means carried on the doors A-A. This latter arrangement insures that the doors A-A and B-B will reach closed position at the proper time and there can be no danger of one set of doors being properly closed and the other set improperly closed at the same time.
I claim:
1. In a car having a centrally disposed bottom opening, the combination withVv a pair of longitudinally arranged doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending lengthwise of the car; of a pair of end doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending transversely of the car; mechanism for primarily closing one of said pairs of doors; and means, carried by said pair of primarily operated doors, for closing the other pair of doors.
2. In a car having a centrally disposed bottom opening, the combination with a pair of longitudinally arranged doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending lengthwise of the ear; of a pair of end doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending transversely of the car; mechanism for opening and closing said longitudinally arranged pair of doors; and means carried by said longitudinally arranged doors for closing the end doors.
3. In a car having a centrally disposed bottom opening, the combination with a pair of longitudinally arranged doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending lengthwise of the car; of a pair of end doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending transversely of the car, mechanism for primarily closing one of said pairs of doors; and means, carried by said pair of primarily operated doors, for closing the other pair of doors, said means comprising wedging elements engageable with the under faces of the last mentioned pair of doors.
4. In a car having a centrally disposed bottom opening, the combination with a pairof longitudinally arranged doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending lengthwise of the car; of a pair of end doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending transversely of the car; mechanism for opening and closing said longitudinally arranged pair of doors; and means carried by said longitudinally arranged doors for closing the end doors, includingwedges car-V ried by the longitudinally arranged doors adapted to engage the 'under faces of the end doors.
5. In a oar having a centrally disposed discharge opening, the combination with a pair of pivotally mounted longitudinally extending doors; of a pair of pivotally mounted transversely extending end doors; means for limiting the opening movement of said Vof longitudinally arranged doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending lengthwise of the car; of a pair of end doors pivotally mounted to swing about axes extending transversely of the car; mechanism for primarily closing one of said pairs of doors; means, carried byvsaid pair of primarily operated doors, for closing the other pair of doors; and fingers carried by said pair of primarily operated doors for engaging the free edges of the other pair of doors when both sets of doors reach closed position.
7. In an ore car having a central single hopper and center sills terminated outside of the ends of the hopper, the combination with a pair of longitudinally extending doors adapted to swing about their outer longitudinal edges; 'of a pair of end doors pivotallymounted to swing about their upper transversely extending edges; a transversely extending operating shaft; mechanism interposed between said shaft and the longitudinally extending doors for operating the latter; means for limiting the opening movement of said transversely extending doors; and camming wedges carried by the longitudinally extending doors for engaging the under sides of the transversely extending doors to force the latter to closed position when the longitudinally extending doors are moved to closed position.
